MELBOURNE — Australia is not generally a place to look for supercars, but here's a stunning track-ready special from Aussie automaker Carbontech.
The Redback Spyder is named for an actual spider, the Australian cousin of the black widow. Aside from the supercool moniker, the Redback Spyder "goes like last week's pay," says its maker in typical bluff Oz style. It's a carbon-fiber-and-Kevlar-bodied two-seater powered by a supercharged Chevrolet LS1 V8 that makes 450 horsepower, and powering the rear wheels via a six-speed Getrag manual gearbox.
Carbontech says it intends the Redback Spyder primarily as a racing car, though the company is working on a street-legal version. The car has a steel and aluminum semimonocoque spaceframe, with double-wishbone front and rear suspension and inboard-mounted shocks. It weighs between 2,000 and 2,200 pounds depending on the options selected.
