The countdown to 2006 World Car of the Year (WCOTY) has begun, and a global panel of automotive journalists will soon begin the process of voting for next year's winner.
The WCOTY panel will also be focusing on three brand-new categories: Green Car of the Year, Design of the Year and Sports/Performance Car of the Year.
Organized by a team of worldwide automotive journalists, and administered by a nonprofit association in Toronto, Canada, WCOTY is now in its second year. The inaugural WCOTY winner, announced this spring, was the Audi A6.
The panel started off this year by evaluating 28 World Car-eligible vehicles. A top 10 will be announced on February 15. A month later, an online ballot produces three World Car finalists. The 2006 WCOTY winner will be revealed on April 15, at the New York show.
Some 2006 WCOTY candidates include the BMW 3 Series, Lexus GS, Mazda MX-5, Mercedes S-Class, Porsche Cayman, Toyota Vitz/Yaris, and Volkswagen Passat.
