Rugged chassis and a tried and tested
suspension layout!
Let us be clear about one thing here. Hyundai Motor India had a choice
between getting the body-on-ladder-frame construction or a monocoque
and went in for the former in the form of the Terracan. The monocoque-bodied
Santa Fe was under consideration too but the company decided to go
in for a true blue off-roader and the body-on-frame construction of
the Terracan is definitely more suited for off-road excursions even
though it might have its limitations on the road.
Nowhere are the Terracan’s Pajero origins more evident than
in the suspension layout. Up front is the rugged double wishbone layout
and like in the older Pajero, is supported by torsion bar springs
as well an anti roll bar along with gas filled shock absorbers.
The rear also features a five-link layout with a rigid axle, coil
springs, gas filled shock absorbers as well as an anti roll bar.
Stopping a 2.8-tonne behemoth is no mean feat and is performed by
ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear. The large capacity
two-port calliper front brake discs aided by anti-lock brakes combined
with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) provide better stability
and shortened braking distances. This system also provides the most
effective distribution of brake force based on the vehicle’s
weight. |
