Ford Fusion - Handling & Braking

Sensible set-up tuned for city roads!

The one thing that strikes you first and foremost about the Fusion is its ground clearance. Wow, 198mm does give you a lot of freedom - and specially freedom from the tension of hitting that speed-breaker or the kerb while parking. That apart the ride quality of the car is good and it flattens the roads with elan. It tackles speed-breakers quite impressively and Pune's potholed roads do not cause it much discomfort either, despite having relatively low profile tyres. Just imagine how it would go with higher profile tyres? However there is quite a lot of body roll which one does not expect and can be un-nerving at times.

Otherwise the car, given its wide track, remains well planted and has the straightline directional stability that one usually experiences on much bigger cars.

The car handles decently well given its size and girth. Though it does not match up to the nimbler saloons and might not be able to compete with them on a track test, it inspires enough confidence to be driven hard on twisty roads. What adds to its dynamic ability is the good feedback one gets from the steering. The same steering that makes the car easy to drive in the city is precise and crisp on mountain roads as well as when darting through traffic.

Braking is good but our view might be biased because the car we tested had the optional ABS.
