Though
we tested the model year 2000 ML320, the vehicle that is now going
to be sold in India is the model year 2002 version. Though Mercedes-Benz
claims that the M-class has undergone an extensive facelift with more
than 1100 changes in the vehicle, they are quick to admit that it
is best to keep a good thing going. Thus the basic mechanicals remain
the same as does the powertrain. Many of the changes are extremely
minor, like the switch from a metal to a composite fastener while
a few are major and immediately noticeable.

First on the list of modified components are the new look front and
rear bumpers with integrated fog lamps. The headlights are also new
with a clear glass look as are the external rear-view mirrors, which
are carried over from other Mercedes-Benz models and come with integrated
indicators. All body attachments on the ML320 like the bumpers, rub
strips and exterior mirror casings which are currently in black will
now be body coloured.
Apart
from the new look bumper, the other major change that is visible from
the outside is the switch to 17-inch alloy wheels from the current
16-inch ones. Tyres are now 255/60 R17 in place of the earlier 225/75
R16H and will be all-season tyres instead of the earlier all-terrain
ones, an acknowledgement by the company of the fact that the M-class
will primarily be used on tarmac and not off it.
Interiors also get a slight makeover with a new-look centre console
which will include additional stowage compartments between the front
seats and for rear passengers, restyled double cup holder, illuminated
ashtray and individually adjustable ventilation outlets. Instead of
a normal A/C control system, the M-class now gets automatic climate
control with an additional blower and separate ventilation outlets
for the rear passengers.

The most important change in the interiors, though not visible, is
the standard fitment of windowbags. These windowbags, measuring 200cm
in length and 500mm in height, inflate like a curtain across the inside
of the side windows in the event of a lateral collision and in conjunction
with the side bags fitted in the doors, offer occupants much greater
protection. Also available on the M-class will be a windscreen mounted
light sensor to automatically activate the exterior lighting when
it gets dark outside. |
