ar for the course.
While it is the Indian way of life to ask even a Ferrari owner what mileage
the thoroughbred delivers, knowing fully well the sheer futility of the
exercise, it is an inescapable fact of life that all our road tests have
been designed with fuel consumption runs in mind. Of course our accountants
do quiz us invariably on the large petrol bills at the conclusion of a
Mercedes test but then for a Mercedes owner fuel costs are hardly a concern;
status and aura are more important than a mere couple of thousand rupees
(around Rs 1800) per tankful.
The CLK has a 62-litre capacity petrol tank and in our test she returned
an 8.5kmpl overall mileage figure. However, count on the car returning
about 7 to 7.5kmpl in everyday use in-town and with a sedate approach
but yet doing high ton-up speeds on the highway she can be made to deliver
close to the 10kmpl mark. For a car with a 3199cc V6 engine, such figures
are nothing short of brilliant.
