Positive spin to auto ancillary
The reduction in excise duty on small cars effected in the 2006 Budget could impart positive market sentiment towards auto-ancillary units, especially the ones having exposure to small cars producers such as Maruti, Tata Motors and Hyundai.

The expected buoyancy in demand for small cars is likely to translate into higher demand for Sona Koyo Steering, Jay Bharat Maruti, Bharat Seats, Exide, Amara Raja Batteries, Asahi India and Subros, among others. Tyre producers catering to the original equipment segment such as MRF, J.K.Industries, Goodyear and Ceat would also attract market attention. The reduction in peak customs duty levels and the reduction in import duty on ferrous and non-ferrous metals should also provide some relief to the auto ancillary producers.

Lexus Announces Pricing on GS 450h Luxury Gas/Electric Hybrid Sport Sedan
TORRANCE, CA -: The 2007 Lexus GS 450h, the world's first luxury performance hybrid sedan, goes on sale in early May with a base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $54,900. Beyond its advanced gas/electric hybrid powertrain and Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) stability control system, the base price includes a wide array of premium standard features typically offered as popular options on the GS 300 and GS 430.

"The GS 450h is a top-flight luxury performance sedan designed to have class-leading acceleration and responsiveness," said Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager Bob Carter. "Like the RX 400h, it is a performance-luxury vehicle without compromise, with fewer emissions and improved fuel economy over competitive V8-powered luxury sedans."

A completely new Lexus hybrid powertrain propels the new GS 450h. The system combines a 3.5-liter V6 engine with a new compact, high-output, permanent magnet electric motor that drives the rear wheels. The transmission utilizes an advanced two-stage motor torque multiplication device for the Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT) motor, delivering responsive and seamless acceleration with no power loss.

With a combined system output of 339 horsepower, the new 3.5-liter V6 hybrid delivers the dynamic performance of a modern 4.5-liter V8 engine and is expected to be as quick or quicker than every V8-powered competitor in its class. The GS 450h accelerates from zero-to-60 miles per hour in approximately 5.2 seconds.

With 80 percent fewer smog-forming emissions than the average new car, the GS 450h delivers an estimated 33 percent better fuel efficiency than its V8 competitors with a manufacture-estimated combined fuel rating of 28 miles-per-gallon (MPG). A Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV)/Tier 2-BIN 3 emissions rating is expected.

Since the GS 450h is driven by its electric motors when starting, traveling slowly and during low-load driving, the Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) level is about half that of a conventional gasoline-powered engine, providing an extremely quiet ride.

In addition to the Lexus Hybrid System, the base price includes VDIM, an advanced stability system designed to anticipate the onset of a vehicle skid or slide and then help to automatically correct the situation with a combination of braking, throttle and steering control in a way that is essentially transparent to the driver.

Other standard features include Electronic Power Steering (EPS) with Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), electrically powered air conditioner, power moonroof and power rear sunshade, heated/ventilated front seats, rear side airbags, rain-sensing wipers, Intuitive Park Assist, rear back-up camera, a Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system, Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) with headlamp washers, 18-inch alloy wheels, and an eight-year/100,000-mile battery and hybrid system warranty.

Auto in top gear, oil slippery
Automobile, construction, cement scrips surged today thanks to the duty cuts. Oil marketing companies, already reeling under the pressure of volatile crude prices, were beaten down further as the budget proposed to hike the cess with no commensurate increase in retail product prices.

Media stocks also took a beating following the budget measure to raise service tax. However, hotels remained unaffected largely.

Aiming the frontline stock, Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL), the biggest small car maker rose 4.29 per cent, Tata Motors gained 3.59 per cent owing to the eight per cent excise duty reduction to 16 per cent for small cars. Following the duty cut, MUL has decided to cut prices of small cars by Rs 13,000 to Rs 22,000 to pass on the benefit to consumers.

Analysts said Maruti would be the biggest beneficiary in the auto sector as it is the biggest small car maker in the country and its parent Suzuki, the biggest in the category in the world.

Jewellery stocks glittered as Vaibhav Gems spurted 7.52 per cent, Suraj diamond jumped 5.05 per cent and Rajesh Exports flared 3.05 per cent as the FM expressed intentions of make policy changes to make India a hub for gems and jewellery sector.

Tea scrips, which has been buoyant on the bourses driven by crop failure in Kenya, gathered further steam on the announcement to set up special purpose tea fund with 1-billion-rupee corpus. William Tea rose 10 per cent, Jayshree Tea gained 5 per cent, Warren Tea gained 5 per cent, Harrisons Malayalam gained 10 per cent.

Increased focus on rural infrastructure and rural lending raised hopes of increased demand for cement from rural housing and infrastructure projects.

As a result, ACC rose 5.24 per cent and Grasim rose 4.43 per cent. Infrastructure and construction stocks ended higher as the FM said highway construction has been speeded up and also proposed larger budgetary provision for Bharat Nirman.

Thanks to the reaffirmation on the government thrust on mega power plans, BHEL gained 5.86 per cent. Other engineering majors Thermax and Siemens were also up over 4 per cent. Similarly, Jaiprakash Associates rose 3.07 per cent, L&T rose 1.45 per cent and Gammon India gained 1.11 per cent.

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) plunged 5.28 per cent, BPCL plunged 2.88 per cent and HPCL lost 3.5 per cent as the government hiked the cess on petrol and diesel sales without commensurate rise in retail prices of products.

Besides, the government was silent on how it would tackle the issue of rising crude prices in future if the situation does not reverse.

Media stocks ended lower as NDTV lost 0.8 per cent while Zee managed to gain just 1.11 per cent following the increase in the service tax from 10 per cent to 12 per cent, inclusion of new services like sale of space or time for advertisement services and sponsorship services were brought under the service tax net. Excise duty on set top boxes was levied at 16 per cent.

Auto fills its tanks, but oil runs dry
The Budget announcement spelt good news for capital goods, FMCG, banking, automobile and textile. However, sectors on which the announcement had an immediate negative impact were PSUs, healthcare, oil and gas, and fertilisers.

Information technology stocks were also down, but analysts were divided over the cause — it could either be profit-booking after Monday’s highs, or an adverse reaction to FBT not being written off.

FMCG showed the smartest increase. The BSE FMCG index moved up 2.5%. Stocks that did well included ITC (up 3.9%) Godrej Consumer (up 2.9%) and Nestle (up 1.6%). ITC was up despite a 5% increase in excise on cigarettes, probably on the back of the company’s focus on the foods sector.

Capital goods flared up on the back of strong announcements on investments in power and infrastructure. The BSE Capital Goods index jumped 2.3%, with BHEL emerging as the lead gainer, putting on 5.9%. Among auto makers, Maruti Udyog’s share price gained the most on the back of the excise duty cut on small cars.

Its share price rose 4.3%, while Tata Motors registered a 3.6% growth. Cement and footwear were the other industries to benefit from the FM’s Budget speech, and it was reflected on their share prices.

Among the losers were the fertiliser sector, which did not receive a mention in the Budget. Oil and gas companies fared badly on the markets. ONGC was down 3.6%, Indian Oil was down 5.3%, and HPCL was down 3.5%.

Hyundai Santro becomes cheaper
NEW DELHI: Minutes after Finance Minister P Chidambaram announced an eight per cent cut in excise duty on small cars, car major Hyundai today announced a Rs 23,000 cut in prices of its flagship 'Santro' car. "The Santro will cost Rs 23,000 less from tomorrow," Hyundai India President B V R Subbu told the agency.

Welcoming the Finance Minister's announcement, he said it would give a fillip to the small car segment. "We hope that it leads to a significant growth in demand for small cars." Subbu said. However, prices of other Hyundai models will remain unaffected, Subbu added.

VW says savings plan made 1 bln euro profit -paper
Volkswagen garnered about 1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) in profit last year from its 3.1-billion-euro cost savings plan, the Financial Times newspaper reported on its Web site on Tuesday.

The newspaper reported that Bernd Pischetsrieder, VW's chief executive, told the newspaper and a small group of journalists that two-thirds of the savings had been lost through currency effects or passed back to customers via sales rebates, meaning only a third of the targeted savings reached the bottom line.

Tenneco eyes China's automobile market
Tenneco Inc, a US-based auto parts supplier, plans to invest US$51million over the next three years in China, where an auto industry boom is expected.

"The investment is about responding to our customers' need for their Chinese production," said Mark Frissora, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Tenneco. "One of Tenneco's key growth strategies is to expand in emerging markets and China is our greatest opportunity in this area."

The NASDAQ-listed company will use part of the investment to open a wholly owned rubber manufacturing plant this June in Suzhou, a city of East China's Jiangsu Province.

It will also set up a new engineering centre in Shanghai as a joint venture to develop automotive exhaust products for its growing customer base in China.

The centre, slated to open at the end of this year, will provide engineering resources to support Tenneco's equipment and aftermarket customers. Shanghai Tractor and Engine Company, a subsidiary of Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp, also has a stake in the venture.

Tenneco will use the centre to meet the demand of domestic automakers, which are eager to expand overseas, said Timothy Jackson, general Manager of Tenneco Asia Pacific.

"Vehicle sales in China continue to grow rapidly and as the fleet begins to age, we expect the aftermarket to take off. These trends represent great potential for Tenneco," said Frissora.

Tenneco operates five joint ventures in China that produce mufflers, shock absorbers and ride control modules.

According to its own estimates, it is the nation's No 1 supplier of exhaust systems.

The company reaped US$41 million in revenue from its operations in Asia last year, a 30 per cent increase year-on-year.

Meanwhile, China accounts for 31 per cent of the company's revenue growth.

By 2015, the amount of vehicle production in China is estimated to catch up with the US automotive market, and Tenneco expects its sales revenue in China to maintain a 9 per cent growth rate for the next four years.

China's auto exports totalled 170,000 vehicles in 2005, up 120.5 per cent, and overtook annual imports for the first time.

Chinese based-companies currently export vehicles mainly to developing nations in Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Outdoor Channel to cover all the USAC/CRA Sprint Car action from the Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway
The Outdoor Channel will be on hand this Saturday, March 4, to cover all the USAC/CRA Sprint Car action from the Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway.

The race is scheduled to be aired April 1, with renowned broadcaster Jack Arute anchoring the broadcast.Rob Klepper will provide the color and Brienne Pedigo will be reporting from the pits.

Since rain forced postponement of the Feb. 18 race at Perris, Cory Kruseman of Ventura, Calif., still holds a one point lead over defending series champion Damion Gardner of Concord, Calif.Perris Auto Speedway and USAC officials recently announced that the postponed race has been rescheduled for Saturday night, April 1.

Through two races this year, Kruseman has a runner-up finish at the season opener at Manzanita Speedway, Phoenix, Ariz., on Jan. 21 and a fourth-place finish at Perris on Feb. 4.From a main event standpoint, Gardner has equaled Kruseman, posting a fourth-place finish at Manzy and a runner-up finish at Perris.Even though “The Demon?? has been the fastest qualifier in both 2006 races, “The Kruser’s?? finishes in heat race competition have given him the slightest of edges in the series points chase.

2004 USAC/CRA Champion Rip Williams of Yorba Linda, Calif., led all but the first lap of the Perris race, and held off a charging Gardner at the finish to earn his 99th sanctioned sprint car victory.Despite the popular victory, a flip in the season opener has left Williams sixth in the series point standing, 47 points behind Kruseman.2005 USAC National Sprint Car Champion, Levi Jones, Olney, Ill., won the Manzanita Speedway race and led the opening lap of the Perris race before finishing eighth.

Santa Maria, Calif.’s Danny Sheridan is off to the best start of his 410 sprint car career, with a top-five finish at Manzanita Speedway and a seventh-place run at Perris.Heading into the televised race this weekend, Sheridan sits third in series points, three points ahead of Mike Spencer of Temecula, Calif.

Maruti denies to market Suzuki bikes
Maruti Udyog Ltd, has said no to its dealers selling two-wheelers of Suzuki Motorcycles India (SMI), in which SMC holds 74 per cent equity, reports Business Standard.

There are some dealers of Maruti which also own two-wheeler outlets affiliated to other manufacturers and some of them may opt for Suzuki. Some may also open new outlets devoted to Suzuki`s two-wheelers.

The sale of SMI`s products through Maruti`s dealers would have given a boost to Suzuki`s motorcycles, which are now riding into a market dominated by Hero Honda, Bajaj Auto and TVS. The three together have over 90 per cent share of the motorcycle market in India.

Driving Your Porsche 911 in Snow
The main point of Porsche's new 911 Turbo is speed of course. Its 480-horsepower, 457 lb-ft torque engine was designed for a zero to 60 mph blast in only 3.4 seconds. But the car's new electronically-controlled all-wheel drive is another feature the new model's predecessor didn't have. Wolfgang Durheimer, who heads up Porsche's R&D, said the previous 911 Turbo couldn't keep up with the Porsche Cayenne SUV on icy and snowy roads in the mountains, and "we wanted to change that," he said. Is now it possible to take curves as fast as in good weather if you happen to run into a snow storm while putting the car to the test in the Rockies or the Alps?

UPDATE 1-AUTOSHOW-Land Rover will have 'good' profit in '06-exec
Ford Motor Co.'s Land Rover brand expects to make "good profit" for the second year in a row in 2006, the division's managing director, Matthew Taylor, said on Tuesday.

The profitability of the brand that is part of Ford's European luxury unit, dubbed Premier Automotive Groups, has been spotty in recent years.

"We made robust profit last year," he told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of the Geneva motor show. "I did expect us to make good profit again this year."

Taylor also said he expects the British brand, which sells luxury sport utility vehicles, to see global sales gains this year, driven by a 10 percent to 15 percent sales increase in the U.S. market.

Taylor expects Land Rover sales in the U.S. market to outpace sales in the U.K. for the first time ever this year.

Taylor also said he is in talks with the union to increase capacity of LR 3 and Range Rover sport vehicles at its Solihull plant in England to 116,000 from 106,000.

The brand is expanding very quickly, and is looking at several new markets, including India, Taylor said.

Three of the four Ford Premier Automotive brands are now profitable, with Jaguar the only one remaining in the red.

In North America, Ford has said it will slash up to 30,000 jobs and shed more than a quarter of its production capacity as it struggles with a deepening financial crisis. The company's North American operations lost $143 million in the fourth quarter.

Mitsubishi sees US sales rising
Mitsubishi Motors Corp (7211.T: Quote, Profile, Research) expects to boost sales in the United States to 240,000 units, thanks to a range of new products it is rolling out, its President Osamu Masuko told Reuters at the Geneva car show.

Asked when he thought Mitsubishi could hit that U.S. sales target, he said: "Maybe in five years. It is not so easy." He said he saw sales rising to 180,000 in 2007 from nearly 125,000 last year.

He said he was not interested in becoming a strategic partner for DaimlerChrysler's loss-making Smart small car business, other than continuing to produce four-seater Smart models at a plant in the Netherlands.

Mitsubishi, which returned to profit in its fiscal third quarter after 11 quarters of losses, made around 80,000 Colt cars last year at the NedCar plant that also makes the Smart ForFour. Masuko said he hoped to make around the same amount this year.

That indicated about 40,000 ForFours would be made at NedCar, which in November cut its 2006 production target by 10,000 vehicles to 120,000 units.

The plant needs to make 130,000 cars to break even, but Masuko said he had no plans to find other models to make there.

Mitsubishi Motors car sales in Europe rose 17.7 percent in calendar year 2005 to 265,685 vehicles, beating its target of 260,000.

It credited a wave of new models such as the Colt CZ3, Colt CZT, Grandis DI-D and Lancer Evolution IX for its ability to boost turnover in an overall stagnant European market.

Masuko said European sales would rise to 260,000 units in the fiscal year to March 2006 from 241,000 a year earlier. Year-on-year growth was running at 13 percent at the end of January.

Automobile exports below potential
New Delhi: The high growth Indian automobile industry would attract a massive investment of Rs 80,000 crore by next year, but its export potential still remains untapped despite it gaining global recognition, the Economic Survey said on Monday.

"While a beginning has been made in the export of vehicles, the potential in this area is far from fully tapped," the Survey tabled by Finance Minister P Chidambaram in Parliament today said.

It made a case for higher foreign shipments even as the automobile exports as a proportion of total production have increased to 8.9 per cent in 2005-06 from 2.9 per cent in 1999-2000.

"During the last two years, export from this sector has grown significantly, owing mainly to the export of cars and two-three-wheelers.

"...For passenger cars and three wheelers, exports in 2005-06 accounted for 18-19 per cent of total production," it said.

The Survey said the auto industry, which maintained a steady annual growth rate of 15 per cent in the last four years, has seen a rise in investment following the liberalisation in the sector in 1991. |Go to Sify Business Home Page|

"The industry had an estimated investment of nearly Rs 50,000 crore in 2002-03, which is expected to go up to Rs 80,000 crore by the year 2007," the survey said.

The Survey said number of automobile manufacturing facilities in India has grown to 15 for passenger cars and multi-utility vehicles, nine for commercial vehicles, and 14 each for two/three wheelers and tractors.

The turnover of the automobile industry exceeded Rs 92,500 crore in 2003-04, which would cross Rs 1,44,000 crore if the turnover of the auto-component sector was included, it added.

Commenting on the passenger car segment, the survey said its output was expected to cross the million mark in the current year compared to 8,000 in 1950-51.

It said the sector also offered a substantial scope for gainful employment. "The direct employment creation was estimated to be to the tune of 4.5 lakh, and indirect employment at about one crore."

Sales of LPG vehicles plummet
Sales of cars powered by LPG fell dramatically since government grants for new cars powered by the fuel ended last year.

The Powershift grant scheme, which offered grants towards the purchase of a new vehicle running on LPG, or up to 50% off conversion to LPG, ended last year. Since then, sales of LPG cars fell from 3185 in 2003 to just 489 last year.

The SMMT believes that the lack of any replacement is causing uncertainty for car manufacturers and buyers.

SMMT Chief executive Christopher Macgowan said 'Buyers need incentives to drive the market for cleaner new cars. There are a whole host of cars on the market featuring a range of technologies, from hybrids and bio-ethanol to cleaner biodiesel and LPG models.

'Government needs to be careful to support all the options and not to favour one technological solution over all others.'

The government's Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, announced last autumn, said that 5% of all car fuel must come from renewable sources by the year 2010.

FERNANDO ALONSO (Spain) 24 years old (July 29, 1981). Eight career wins, 69 starts, nine pole positions. WORLD CHAMPION.

GIANCARLO FISICHELLA (Italy) 33 (Jan 14, 1973). Two wins, 159 starts, two poles. Fifth in 2005.

Renault will be in the hunt for both titles again, although Alonso's shock decision to join McLaren in 2007 was a blow to morale. Fisichella will never get a better chance.

Car: Renault V8-powered R26, Michelin tyres.

MCLAREN

KIMI RAIKKONEN (Finland) 26 (17 Oct, 1979). Nine wins, 86 starts, eight poles, second in 2005.

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA (Colombia), 30 (20 Sept, 1975). Seven wins, 84 starts, 13 poles, fourth.

Won more races than Renault last year. Raikkonen looks dominant but Montoya will be more competitive after injury-hit year. Expect a battle between them in the final season for one of them at the team. Return to tyre changes may hit McLaren more than others. Questions remain about engine reliability.

Car: Mercedes V8-powered MP4-21. Michelin.

FERRARI

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER (Germany) 37 (Jan 3, 1969). Seven championships, 84 wins, 231 starts, 64 poles, Third.

FELIPE MASSA (Brazil) 24 (April 25, 1981). 54 starts. 13th.

Probably Schumacher's last real crack at winning an eighth title and maybe his last season. Ferrari should do better than last year, when they won just one hollow victory in the six-car U.S. Grand Prix. Rule changes could also help them.

Car: Ferrari V8 F248. Bridgestone.

TOYOTA

JARNO TRULLI (Italy) 31 (July 13, 1974). One win, 146 starts, three poles. Seventh.

RALF SCHUMACHER (Germany) 30 (June 30, 1975). Six wins, 145 starts, six poles. Sixth.

The most improved team of 2005, finally punching at close to their considerable financial weight. A first win has to be on the cards and they aim to end the season in the top three.

Car: Toyota V8 TF106. Bridgestone.

WILLIAMS

MARK WEBBER (Australia) 29 (Aug 17, 1976). 68 starts. 10th.

NICO ROSBERG (Germany) 20 (June 27, 1985). Rookie.

No longer with BMW, much depends on power and reliability of Cosworth engine. May gain from the switch to Bridgestone tyres. Rosberg full of promise but faces a steep learning curve.

Car: Cosworth V8-powered FW28. Bridgestone.

HONDA

JENSON BUTTON (Britain) 26 (Jan 19, 1980) 100 starts. Ninth.

RUBENS BARRICHELLO (Brazil) 33 (May 23, 1972). Nine wins, 215 starts, eighth.

Formerly BAR, the team's aim remains the same -- to win a race for the first time. The early signs are promising, with the Honda V8 looking quick. Button and Barrichello start as equals and their rivalry should be fascinating. Both can win.

Car: Honda V8-powered RA106. Michelin.

RED BULL

DAVID COULTHARD (Britain) 34 (March 27, 1971). 13 wins, 194 starts. 12th.

CHRISTIAN KLIEN (Austria) 23 (Feb 7, 1983). 31. 15th.

Will be hard to improve on last year although Ferrari engines, Coulthard's exprience and arrival of top designer Adrian Newey from McLaren will help. Had problems with overheating in pre-season testing.

Car: Ferrari V8-powered RB2. Michelin.

BMW-SAUBER

NICK HEIDFELD (Germany) 28 (May 10, 1977). 97. 11th.

JACQUES VILLENEUVE (Canada) 34 (April 9, 1971). One championship, 11 wins, 151 starts. 14th.

Making their debut after BMW bought Sauber. Too much to expect them to win a race this year but should still do better than Sauber last year. Likely to be 1997 world champion Villeneuve's last season.

Car: BMW V8-powered F1.06. Michelin.

MIDLAND

CHRISTIJAN ALBERS (Netherlands) 26 (April 16, 1979). 19 starts. 19th.

TIAGO MONTEIRO (Portugal) 29 (July 24, 1976). 19, 16th.

Making their debut after demise of Jordan, the team they bought last year. New car but likely to find themselves still running among the backmarkers.

Car: Toyota V8-powered M16. Bridgestone.

SCUDERIA TORO ROSSO

VITANTONIO LIUZZI (Italy) 24 (June 8, 1981) Four, 24th.

SCOTT SPEED (U.S.) 23 (Jan 24, 1983). rookie.

Formerly Minardi, bought by Red Bull last year. Expect to see big improvement in form, with a car owing much to last year's competitive Red Bull. The aptly-named Speed will be the first American to start a race in 13 years.

Car: Cosworth V10-powered STR1. Michelin.

SUPER AGURI

TAKUMA SATO (Japan) 29 (Jan 28, 1977) 51 starts. 23rd.

YUJI IDE (Japan) 31 (Jan 21, 1975) rookie.

Formula One's first all-Japanese team and newest arrival faces baptism of fire, with car based on 2002 Arrows and little testing before start of season. Sato has the experience, Ide first drove an F1 car in February.

Car: Honda V8-powered SA05. Bridgestone.

Europeans Wants Their SUVs
Who would have ever thought Europeans would buy into the SUV craze? Despite more than $5 a gallon gas prices in this corner of the world, SUVs' market share has more than doubled during the past few years in Europe and is closing in fast on the 10% mark. Interestingly enough, General Motors took the wraps off today of its first Chevrolet SUV designed just for the European market. With a diesel engine, the company says you can fill up the Captiva's tank for just over $70, which is considered a near bargain here for a SUV.

Your small car will now be less expensive
I reiterate that it is our intention to converge all rates at the CENVAT rate, which is now at 16 per cent.

There are only two items - aerated drinks and cars - that still attract the higher rate of 24 per cent. I propose to correct this substantially.

I propose to reduce the excise duty on aerated drinks to 16 per cent. On cars, I propose to reduce the excise duty to 16 per cent, but only for small cars.

A small car, for this purpose, will mean a car of length not exceeding 4,000 mm and with an engine capacity not exceeding 1,500 cc for diesel cars and not exceeding 1,200 cc for petrol cars.

I am confident that the industry will seize the opportunity to make India a hub for the manufacture of small and fuel-efficient cars.

GKN announces preliminary 2005 results
GKN’s group sales of continuing operations for 2005 were £3,648m, £167m higher than in 2004, and it achieved an operating profit of £98m, compared to a £24m operating loss reported a year ago. Group after-tax profit was £59m. GKN is making an immediate £200k contribution to its UK pension scheme.

Sales of continuing businesses were up 5%; trading profit up 7%. While GKN’s aerospace business delivered a 10% increase in sales and a 42% increase in trading profit, automotive profits were slightly down as cost pressures offset acquisition benefits, though a ‘robust’ performance was boasted by Driveline, which launched the ‘first major breakthrough in CVJ technology for 70 years’.

Kevin Smith, Chief Executive of GKN plc, commented on the 2006 outlook for the automotive business: "Industry forecasts for North American and Western European markets are for little change in production volumes, although there remains some risk of disruption to the former following recent supplier insolvencies. However, developing markets, especially in Asia Pacific, are expected to show continuing strong growth.

“Prices for steel and other automotive raw materials appear to have stabilised although energy costs are still showing some increase. “With its presence in emerging markets and strategic restructuring programme nearing completion, Driveline should have another solid year. Powder Metallurgy expects to show further recovery and growth. Results for our other smaller automotive businesses will be impacted by redundancy costs.”

Future of hybrids in Europe depends on higher-volume-segments- EurotaxGlass’s
According to EurotaxGlass’s, the market for petrol-electric hybrid road cars in Europe will only flourish if vehicle manufacturers launch greater numbers of vehicles into volume-selling segments where buyers are concerned about fuel efficiency.

The company says the prospect of lower fuel consumption will be vital in boosting sales of hybrids, helping to repay manufacturer investment in the technology. However, a significant proportion of the hybrid vehicles currently scheduled for production are large luxury cars or SUVs - niche models where sales volumes are limited or in decline, and where concerns about fuel efficiency and emissions are less paramount for the typical buyer. Although diesels now command a sizeable proportion of sales in the large luxury and SUV sectors, owners of such cars know their fuel consumption lags well behind that of many vehicles in most other segments.

EurotaxGlass’s argues that carmakers must take full account of the differences in the US and European marketplaces to maximise all opportunities for hybrid technology. Jeff Paterson, Senior Car Editor at EurotaxGlass’s, says, “The hybrid models being prepared for production indicate a heavy bias towards the tastes of the US market, with large SUVs and luxury cars often being favoured. This may make sense in a market where diesel isn’t a viable alternative, but in Europe these vehicles will not sell in significant numbers.”

EurotaxGlass’s suggests prestige, volume and budget-brand manufacturers alike should target the lower-medium and upper-medium segments in particular, where competitively priced hybrid power would present a tempting alternative to diesel for significant numbers of both fleet and retail buyers.

NHRA NEWS: SUNDAY RESULTS FROM PHOENIX
Warren Johnson, the most prolific Pro Stock racer in NHRA history, pushed his career victory total to 96 Sunday by winning the 22nd annual Checker Schuck's Kragen NHRA Nationals presented by Castrol at Firebird International Raceway.

The 62-year-old Johnson stopped category dominator Greg Anderson, while Top Fuel sophomore Rod Fuller and Funny Car standout Tommy Johnson Jr. also scored victories at the $1.5 million race, the second of 23 in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

Johnson raced past his former crew chief Anderson with a final round performance of 6.770 seconds at 206.13 mph in his GM Performance Parts Pontiac GTO, while Anderson's Summit Racing GTO lost traction near mid-track.

"I never looked over in the final but when I didn't see him at half track I felt pretty good," Johnson said. "I beat him on the back half (of the track). We make more power at the top end, so if he isn't ahead of me by the eighth mile then he's toast."

The win was satisfying for Johnson, who employed Anderson in the 1990s and the two won multiple championships together. Anderson's series lead was held to 48 points by Johnson's victory.

"It's awful hard to make up rounds so the closer you can stay to the top guy the quicker you can catch him and pass him," said Johnson, who beat V. Gaines, Jason Line and Rickie Smith to advance to the final. "We have the team to hang with them. They all worked for me at one time or another. I know what they can do."

Fuller earned his second career victory by holding off series points leader Troxel in a close race, finishing in 4.563 seconds at 321.42 mph in his Valvoline/David Powers Homes dragster to Troxel's 4.589 at 318.92 mph in her Skull Gear/Torco Race Fuels dragster.

"A few people said maybe we'd run for a top-five spot," said Fuller, who defeated Doug Herbert, Hillary Will and Tony Schumacher to advance to the final. "But mostly we heard we're an unproven team. Well people are starting to see what we're capable of. This team has everything it needs to win. (Crew chief) Lee Beard is the best, (team owner) David Powers gives us everything we need, and Valvoline is behind us."

Troxel, who has been to the last three finals in a row, lost 25 points on the day after two oildown penalties but maintained her spot as the series points leader. She just missed the opportunity to win her second straight race and share the winner's circle with her Funny Car winning husband.

"I'm happy for him and those guys," Troxel said. "Each of us having a win already this season makes home life a lot better. It's pretty cool that his win came one race after mine. There's plenty of season left. We both would like to win the same race. That would be really cool. My team is doing a great job. Despite all the parts we have been going through we have really high morale now and we are excited about the Gatornationals."

Johnson Jr. claimed his seventh career victory and fifth in Funny Car, when he defeated John Force in the final round. Both cars lost traction in the race, but Johnson Jr. was able to navigate the quarter-mile in 5.225 at 249.76 in his Skoal Chevy Monte Carlo, while Force trailed with a 5.705 at 294.69 in his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang.

"We'd run 4.80s all day and it felt just like another one was on the way and then, zip, it blew off the tires," Johnson Jr. said about the final. "I pedaled it once, then twice, and I still didn't see him so I just buried the throttle pedal to the floor. Beating Force is awesome. He's the best of all time."

Johnson Jr. also defeated Robert Hight, Tony Pedregon and Phil Burkart in earlier rounds. Like Troxel, he was hoping to make history as the first married couple to win at the same event.

"It would have been great if Melanie had won in Top Fuel," Johnson Jr. said. "I told 'Hot Rod' he ruined my day. But really I'm proud of her for getting to two finals in a row to start the year and her loss didn't take anything away from our win."

Ron Capps moved into the series points lead in Funny Car, 15 ahead Force. Johnson Jr. moved to fifth with his victory.

New Rolls-Royce concept car unveiled at Geneva Show
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled a second experimental car, called the 101EX, at the Geneva show yesterday. It has been hand-built to ‘explore a potential design direction’ for a future coupé model, according to chief designer Ian Cameron.

A full four-seat coupe, the 101EX uses the same aluminium construction developed for the Phantom, and features a ‘starlight headliner’ made up of hundreds of fibre optic cables to give the impression of a star-filled night sky. There are no current plans to develop a production version.

NHRA Warren Johnson Race Wrap Up: WJ Battles His Way to the Win in Phoenix
Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts GTO Racing Team scored a tenacious win in Sunday's final eliminations of the Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals in Phoenix, AZ. Starting from the eleventh position, Johnson posted early round victories over veterans V. Gaines, Jason Line and Rickie Smith before capping the performance with a win over rival Greg Anderson in the championship round. It was the 96th win of WJ's stellar career, first of the 2006 season and third at Firebird Raceway.

"Starting eleventh as we did today is usually not a good omen, but we made it work, getting our GM Performance Parts GTO into the winner's circle," said Johnson."Our starting position showed we didn't initially have the right set-up for this race track, but we kept working on improving our performance, getting it close enough to where we could win, which is what's important. It wasn't pretty, but sometimes you get paid for getting the job done."

Although winning is certainly nothing new for "The Professor", his path to the Arizona winner's circle on Sunday was far from an ordinary one, as he scored round wins in virtually every way possible.Johnson opened by combining a strong .022 reaction time with a 6.751-second, 204.91 mph run to defeat V. Gaines on a holeshot, who recorded a quicker 6.708-second time in the losing effort. In the second round, he was the recipient of a red-light start by Line, with WJ using a 6.742-second, 206.07 mph pass to claim lane choice for the semifinals.

Squaring off in the semi-finals against veteran Smith, Johnson posted his only "normal" win of the day, leaving on his opponent and then posting a quicker 6.756-second elapsed time with a top speed of 205.69 mph to better Smith's 6.788-second, 204.26 mph clocking, to reach the 149th final round of his career.

The final obstacle between Johnson and the win was Anderson. With his opponent holding lane choice and a slight performance advantage in the early part of the track, Johnson knew he would need an error-free run to get the win. From the moment the lights turned green, a determined WJ surged ahead, using an outstanding .015 reaction time to gain the edge by over three hundredths of second.

However, before Anderson had a chance to make up the deficit, his ride suddenly slowed due to a parts failure. This allowed Johnson to race down the quarter-mile uncontested, crossing the finish line in 6.770 seconds with a top speed of 206.13 mph. With the trophy firmly in hand, the six-time champion was quick to credit his young team.

"I have never seen a script on how to win a race - there's only one way to win and a million ways to lose," stated Johnson."The bottom line is that you have to get to the finish line first without a red light in your lane.We did that and were able to accomplish everything we wanted to today.

"I have won a few of these things in a variety of ways, so I take events like today in stride. However, the true importance of this win is what it means to our young GM Performance Parts crew, including Dain Schwan, Adam Drzayich and Mike Smith. This is their first win as a group and I really enjoyed seeing how excited they are about winning.I couldn't have done this today without their hard work and preparation.

"But it doesn't stop there. Today's win was a collective effort, including Kurt's ACDelco team and everyone back at the shop in Sugar Hill.Overall, we have the best chemistry on our teams that we have ever had, making both of our programs run smoother. We're definitely excited moving forward, because we have yet to maximize our race car's performance. We're going to enjoy this win tonight before getting back to work, testing before Gainesville, working on the early part of the run, to see what we can do to maintain this winning pace."

Bazemore fouls out, exits early in Phoenix
Whit Bazemore's misfortunes continued today in final eliminations for the Checker Schuck's Kragen NHRA Nationals at Firebird Raceway, as an uncharacteristic red light ended his day in the first round.

Bazemore, crew chief Brian Corradi and assistant crew chief Todd Okuhara struggled all weekend with the performance of the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Stratus Funny Car, qualifying 11th and suffering through mechanical issues during this morning's warmup.

His day didn't improve in the opening round, when he faced his teammate Ron Capps without lane choice. Bazemore took off way too early, fouling out with a minus-.210 reaction time, while Capps took the win with a 4.743-second ET at 321.58 mph.

"We are just in a frustrating spot right now," Bazemore said with disappointment on his face. "The red light was really pathetic and the tree (starting lights) was just a little longer, I was fired up , and my foot went down.

"It doesn't happen very often, but it happened, and I'll take full blame for that, obviously. I think it's just a case of trying too hard, more than anything.

"We have a lot of work to do and we have some things we're going to be working on. We're testing here tomorrow.

"We're still a new team and we're going to be working on addressing some of the issues that we have and that's what you do when you're a new team. Sometimes it just doesn't fall together perfectly. You have to work at it. We're going to work at it and come back to Gainesville much stronger and with a driver that can go up there and do his job," added Bazemore, the defending 2005 Gatornationals Funny Car champion.

Bazemore is concerned about the tire issues in Funny Car and Top Fuel: "The NHRA mandated a new tire for Gainesville. It's highly likely it's going to change the landscape, if you will, of the fuel classes, at least for a couple of races. When everyone ran this tire in testing they struggled with it. We're very concerned about the ability of the tire to do its job."

Next up is the ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., on March 16-19.

FUNNY CAR POINT STANDINGS 1. Ron Capps, 166 2. John Force, 151 3. Tommy Johnson Jr.,149 (winner today) 4. Robert Hight, 146 5. Phil Burkart, 144 6. Del Worsham, 107 7. Bob Gilbertson, 104 8. Tony Pedregon, 90 9. Gary Scelzi, 89 10. Cruz Pedregon, 88 11. Eric Medlen, 72 12. Whit Bazemore, 66

New child-restraint regulations
New regulations concerning the use of child restraints are to be introduced in May 2006.

The new regulations, which will bring the UK in line with European regulations, will reinforce the rules already in place, and extend them to include the correct use of child seats and seat belts, except in taxis.

Details of proposed new regulations aimed at improving road safety through more appropriate use of child restraints were announced yesterday by Road Safety Minister Stephen Ladyman. The government estimates that some 2000 casualties could be saved if all drivers ensured that their passengers adhered to the new regulations.

Commenting on the announcement, RoadSafe director Adrian Walsh said: "Although these regulations will bring us into line with Europe, there is no earthly reason why responsible drivers should not insist on all passengers wearing belts now. It is staggering just how often they simply don't bother - worse still many parents don't use appropriate child seats or even allow young children to sit in the front of cars."

GM expects Europe market share growth in 2006
General Motors Corp. said Tuesday it expected an increase in its European market share this year and flagged plans to increase sales in higher-margin areas.

"We are certainly (looking) for share growth in Cadillac," the automaker's Europe chief, Carl-Peter Forster told reporters at the Geneva auto show.

"Saab could grow or at least maintain its share...Chevrolet most probably is up for another year of strong growth. Put it all together, most probably we will grow share," Forster said.

Chevrolet is launching two new products, including the Captiva SUV, this year in Europe.

The Opel brand, its largest in Europe, is looking for more profitable sales and will be moving away from some low-margin business, he said. Forster did not say whether Opel will be able to gain share.

GM Europe's head of marketing Jonathan Browning said the company planned to move away from low margin areas such as sales to vehicle rental companies.

"What we have been looking to do is remix this year around about 50,000 units out of lower margin to better margin businesses," Browning told Reuters in an interview. "Rental is one of those areas, (but) it is not exclusively rental."

Remixing volumes is one of the measures GM Europe is looking at to take 500 million euros ($593.8 million) out of its cost base by end of this year.

Forster said eastern Europe was a key growth market for the automaker, particularly for its Chevrolet brand.

In 2005, GM sales in the European auto market fell 0.7 percent to 1.62 million vehicles. GM's share of the market in western, central and eastern Europe was flat at 10.7 percent, according to data compiled by European car industry group ACEA.

The auto industry in Europe overall could see a slightly better year in 2006, Forster said. "Slightly better means 3 percent growth or so," he said.

Perodua Aims For 27 Pct Share Of Automobile Market
Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) aims to increase its share of the automobile market to 27 percent this year from 25.3 percent previously, Perodua's managing director Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar said.

Perodua captured a 33 percent share of the passenger car segment last year, with its latest pride, Myvi, contributing 45 percent to its total sales growth in the year.

"Booking for the Myvi has reached almost 90,000 units, beginning from the first day of its launch until yesterday," Abu Bakar said.

He was speaking to reporters after a prize presentation ceremony Tuesday for winners of the Myvi Teaser campaign.

The response for Myvi since its launch last May has been encouraging, he said, adding that 45,000 units have been delivered so far and another 45,000 units on the waiting list.

Abu Bakar said that Perodua was aiming to produce 70,000 units of Myvi vehicles this year, with 7,000 units per month up to July.

He said the average booking for Myvi was 4,000 to 5,000 units per month.

Asked on whether Perodua was planning to export Myvi to other countries, he said that the company will look into it in four to five months time.

Abu Bakar said that Perodua was also planning to open up seven to eight new branches of Perodua service centres this year nationwide.

120,000-unit Dongfeng Honda project operational
With a white CR-V car going out of an assembly line, a project with an annual output capacity of 120,000 passenger cars has been operational at Dongfeng Honda Automobile (Wuhan) Co., Ltd.

It is learned that with an investment of 2.8 billion yuan (about 350 million US dollars), the building of the project is based on the original annual output capability of 30,000 vehicles.

Dongfeng Honda., a joint venture between Dongfeng and Honda, launched the project in January 24, 2005.

Founded in July 2003, the company has mainly turned out model SUV vehicles. Since putting on sale its first-generation model CR-V in May 2004, the company had sold 26,244 cars in 2005 with market share increased from 6.7 per cent in 2004 to 13 per cent in 2005.

It is reported that the joint venture will add Civic compact models to the market in the coming April.

Sixty-five per cent of Dongfeng-Honda vehicles are domestically made and the next year's goal will be 75 per cent while five key engine parts have been already localized.

Aero X: Saab Blows the Doors Off With Concept Debut in Geneva
GENEVA — Saab unveiled the Aero X concept this morning at the Geneva Motor Show, showcasing a doorless design, carbon-fiber construction and a 400-horsepower power plant.

Officials said the car will be used to inspire future designs both outside and in, which should please many enthusiasts considering power is supplied by a 400hp twin-turbo 2.8-liter V-6 that runs on bioethanol that enables lower CO2 emissions. The engine drives all four wheels through a seven-speed sequential automated manual transmission with double clutch system that is shifted via steering-wheel paddles. Saab projects a 0-60 acceleration time of less than 4.9 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 155 mph.

The Aero X features an electronically adjustable suspension system and rides on 22-inch tires in front and 23s in the rear. Measuring 184.1 inches long overall and just 50.2 inches tall, the concept weighs just over 3,300 pounds.

The most eye-popping characteristic of the vehicle is its doorless design, opting for a canopy setup where the driver climbs into the cockpit and lowers the cover. This offers 180-degree views for both passengers by eliminating pillars.

The inside of the concept presents a clean Scandinavian design with no conventional dials and buttons. Instead, the Aero X displays driving data on glasslike acrylic "clear zones" in graphic 3-D images. All exterior and interior lighting is by LED (light-emitting diode), a technology the company says will be featured in future Saab products.

A1 Grand Prix and Cooper Tire Heat Up the Track in Mexico
COOPER TIRE & RUBBER COMPANY's Cooper-A1 Grand Prix racing radials blazed around the Parque Fundidora in Mexico at the A1 Grand Prix's latest stop of the season Sunday.

Alexandre Premat and A1 Team France won with a time of 52.26.709 while Jos Verstappen and A1 Team Netherlands took second with a time of 52.27.489 and Neel Jani and A1 Team Switzerland grabbed third with a time of 52.30.234.

"The race was fun, and the car was quite good," said Premat. "We changed quite a lot in the break after the Sprint race and we got the fastest lap as well which is nice."

Drivers from 21 teams in the series, dubbed the World Cup of Motorsport, competed on 370/660R13 Cooper-A1 tires fitted to 16-inch wide racing rims.

Designed to run at very high temperatures, the Cooper-A1 tire's distinctive blend of compounds create a soft and tacky tire to provide an incredible level of grip by literally sticking the car to the track. Cooper Tire has also designed a grooved wet weather tire to handle even the most severe weather conditions but with a construction that provides enough resilience to endure a full race distance.

"We are excited about the performance of our Cooper-A1 tires on this slick track," said Thomas A. Dattilo chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company. Star-studded Roller
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled a second experimental car, 101EX, at the Geneva Motor Show

According to the company, it has been hand built to '...explore a potential design direction for a future coupe model'.

101EX uses the same lightweight aluminium construction that was developed for the Phantom, although the body is shorter by 240mm. A full four-seat coupe, twin-coach doors are said to add to the car's 'rakish good looks' and streamlined coupe profile.

The design team has experimented with interior lighting on 101EX, and the car features a 'starlight headliner' made up of hundreds of fibre optic cables to give the impression of a star filled night sky.

Ian Robertson, Rolls-Royce Chairman and Chief Executive, said, "101EX employs the same engineering philosophy as the Phantom, balancing high technology with hand craftsmanship. It illustrates the position of strength from which we operate and points the way for potential new models."

Currently there are no plans to develop a production version of 101EX.

New rules on seat belts planned
The government has announced proposals for new regulations aimed at improving road safety through more appropriate use of child restraints.

The government estimates that 2000 casualties could be saved if all drivers ensure that their passengers adhere to the new regulations.

The new rules are intended to bring the UK into line with the rest of Europe with regard to seat belts. The director of RoadSafe, a road safety partnership which links government, the road safety industry and the motor industry, thinks drivers should act now, and not wait for legislation.

'Although these regulations will bring us into line with Europe, there is no reason why responsible drivers should not insist on all passengers wearing belts now. It is staggering just how often they simply don't bother - worse still, many parents don't use appropriate child seats, and even allow young children to sit in the front of cars,' said RoadSafe director Adrian Walsh.

At the heart of the regulations, set out in EC Directive 2003/20/EC, are these stipulations:

• All children under three years old must use an appropriate child restraint when travelling in any car or goods vehicle (except in the rear of a taxi if a child seat is not available).

• Children aged three or more and up to 135cm in height must use an appropriate child restraint when travelling in cars or goods vehicles fitted with seat belts.

• Where seat belts are fitted, the number of people in the rear of vehicles may not exceed the number of seats available fitted with seat belts or child restraints .

The new rules are not expected to come into force until September.

Automobiles drive industry to success
Impressive 8.9% growth in 2005-06 despite a poor show by mining, power sectors.

The Indian automobile industry is likely to attract an investment of Rs 30,000 crore in the four years to 2007, according to the Economic Survey.

The industry also offered substantial scope for gainful employment — 4.5 lakh directly and about 1 crore indirectly.

The sector has maintained a steady annual growth of over 15 per cent in the last four years.

“The industry had an estimated investment of nearly Rs 50,000 crore in 2002-03, which is expected to go up to Rs 80,000 crore by the year 2007,” says the Survey.

The turnover of the automobile industry exceeded Rs 92,500 crore in 2003-04, and including the turnover of the auto component sector, it may have well exceeded Rs 144,000 crore.

Exports of automobiles as a proportion of the total production have increased from 2.9 per cent in 1999-2000 to 8.9 per cent in 2005-06.

The automobile sector symbolises the industrial recovery that commenced in the second quarter of 2002-03.

The rate of growth of the industrial sector, in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), during April-December 2005-06, was 7.8 per cent compared with a growth rate of 8.6 per cent in the corresponding period of 2004-05.

The target growth of industry during the Tenth Plan (2002-07) was put at 10 per cent, consistent with an overall gross domestic product growth of 8 per cent.

However, “notwithstanding a distinct improvement in the manufacturing growth in the last two years, overall industrial growth so far has remained well short of the target”, says the Survey.

Deceleration in the growth of mining and electricity sectors in the current year may put added pressure on the manufacturing sector to maintain overall industrial buoyancy.

The performance of the manufacturing sector has been impressive. It grew at 8.9 per cent during this period. A moderate deceleration of 0.8 percentage points in the growth rates of IIP in the current year was due to a decline in the growth rates for mining and electricity sectors.

Decline in the rate of growth in the mining sector from an average of 4.4 per cent in 2004-05 to 0.4 per cent in the current year so far was partly due to a fall in the levels of crude oil production as a result of a fire accident in July 2005 at Mumbai High.

The electricity sector also witnessed a moderate slow-down in the current year, which can partly be attributed to a shortage of gas and coal. Inadequate investment in these two sectors affected the capacity additions and contributed to this shortage.

Maruti cuts prices by Rs 13k -22k
NEW DELHI: Indian car market leader Maruti Udyog on Tuesday announced a price cut ranging between Rs 13,000-22,000 across five models, including 'M800' and 'Alto', following the cut in excise duty on small cars.

"Maruti prices will reduce from tomorrow," company Managing Director Jagdish Khattar said, immediately after the Finance Minister announced that excise duty on small cars will come down by eight per cent to 16 per cent.

The price cut on the popular 'M800' will be around Rs 13,000, hatchback 'Alto' by Rs 15,000, and on 'WagonR' between Rs 15,000 and Rs 22,000, Khattar said.

"We will incur a loss of Rs 30-40 crore because of this though it would be good in the long term," Khattar said.

The other two models where prices will be cut are the 'Zen' and 'Omni' van.

Excise duty cut, a boon for small carmakers
The Finance Minister in his Budget has proposed a cut in excise duty on small cars from 24 per cent to 16 per cent. Small cars have been defined as petrol cars with an engine capacity not exceeding 1,200 cc and not exceeding 4,000 mm in length, and diesel cars of engine capacity not exceeding 1,500 cc and not exceeding 4,000 mm in length.

Cars that would fall under the proposed definition include the Maruti 800, Wagon R, Zen, Alto, Hyundai Santro and the diesel variant of Tata Indica. Maruti's proposed Swift diesel, which will come with a 1.3 litre diesel engine later this year, is also likely to fall under this category.

Mr Jagdish Khattar, Managing Director, Maruti Udyog Limited, said that the measure would not only boost the popularity of small cars in the country, but also help establish India as an export hub for small cars. "Further, more players will enter this segment in India. The segment saw a growth of about 5-6 per cent till about December-January this year, this may now increase to a double-digit figure next year," he said.

Mr B.V.R. Subbu, President, Hyundai Motor India, said that the policy would help accelerate sales of small cars and is a positive step for the domestic automotive industry.

India is not the only country that now has a separate policy for small cars. Japan, Korea and Brazil have similar policies.

Not everyone's happy

The step, however, did not go down well with all car manufacturers.

"The Finance Minister's decision to reduce excise duty from 24 per cent to 16 per cent on small cars is disappointing for car manufacturers like Honda. We feel that any concessions for the automobile industry should have been extended across all segments of cars. We have been highly appreciative of the Government's fair duty structure, but a differential duty structure will lead to skewed growth," Mr Rajiv Saharia, General Manager, Sales & Marketing, Honda Siel Cars India, said.

He added that the industry has seen maximum growth in the mid-size car segment, with small-car buyers upgrading to bigger cars. "With a segmented duty structure, the gap between a small car and a sedan becomes larger, making the upgradation that much more difficult for the consumer." Mr Rajeev Chaba, President & Managing Director, General Motors, said that the Budget was not on expected lines for the passenger car industry. "We expected the excise duties to come down for all cars and not only on small cars," he said.

Mr Bharat Doshi, Executive Director, Mahindra & Mahindra, said from an automobile industry perspective, while the reduction in excise duty for small cars is a step in the right direction one wishes he had remembered that vehicles sold in rural areas, like utility vehicles, could also have merited similar consideration.

Microsoft Shifts the Digital Lifestyle Into High Gear
GENEVA, Today at the 2006 Geneva International Motor Show, Microsoft Corp.'s Automotive Business Unit introduced Windows Mobile(R) for Automotive, a software platform and hardware reference design that helps the automotive industry speed the development of safer, more reliable and affordable in-car infotainment systems for drivers and passengers worldwide.

Concurrently, Microsoft and Fiat Auto Group unveiled Blue&Me, the first in-car infotainment system based on Windows Mobile for Automotive. Blue&Me allows motorists to use voice commands and a push-to-talk button to operate their mobile phones, digital music players and other devices in a safer, more convenient manner in the car. The system supports hands-free communication for more than 140 types of mobile phones via a Bluetooth(R) connection, and through a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port it can connect with a wide variety of personal music players and other devices. The software is upgradeable, so it can be refreshed to accommodate consumers' changing needs supporting future devices and new industry standards. The system supports nine languages and is available to drivers and passengers throughout Europe in the company's Fiat Grande Punto, Alfa Romeo 159, Alfa Romeo Spider and Alfa Romeo Brera models.

"The digital lifestyle is about staying connected with people and information, and enjoying digital entertainment, wherever you are -- even in the car. Working with Fiat we have delivered automotive-grade systems that extend the digital lifestyle into the car at a price that is affordable to most car buyers," said Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. "Windows Mobile for Automotive provides performance, reliability and flexibility for a new generation of in-car communication and infotainment solutions."

"By partnering with Microsoft, we've been able to design, test and deliver a new in-car infotainment system to market in less than two years," said Giuseppe Bonollo, vice president of Product Portfolio Management at Fiat Auto. "We look forward to offering similar Microsoft-powered systems to our customers in every new Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo model over the next few years."

The Industry's First Standardized Platform

Microsoft(R) Windows Mobile for Automotive provides the industry with an open, standardized platform for in-car infotainment system development. Automakers developing in-car infotainment systems using the platform can tailor functionality for specific models or desired price points. For example, a navigation system in an economy car might only provide voice prompts and a heads-up display, while a luxury model may offer a full-color LCD display featuring maps and real-time traffic information. As a result, Windows Mobile for Automotive helps the industry achieve the following:

-- Fast time to market. Manufacturers can move quickly to market with a standards-based, ready-to-install electronics gateway that gives consumers hands-free digital access to cell phones, music and information in their cars.

-- Low development costs. Windows Mobile for Automotive frees OEMs from the need to develop proprietary software
- with its associated high development costs. This entry-level solution is based on a familiar Microsoft programming model and supports industry standards for reliability, power consumption and temperature variations.
-- Flexible implementation. Available in two versions, Windows Mobile for Automotive can easily be tailored to meet automakers' needs across a variety of models, vehicle types and price points. Because the software is upgradeable, support for new devices, applications and industry standards can be added to increase functionality for drivers and passengers over the life of the car. Software upgrades can be easily deployed by the dealer via the wireless connection or USB port.

FunKtion Auto Group Announces Grand Opening
DULLES, VA -: FunKtion Auto Group, a Dulles, VA based automobile dealership, maintenance shop, racing group and auto enthusiast club today announced the grand opening of its 9,000 square foot facility.

FunKtion Auto is located at 44264 Mercure Drive in Dulles, VA, and is accessible by both the Washington Beltway and Route 28. The "one stop auto shop" sells, services, maintains, races and stores automobiles for its customers. Featuring a full service lounge for customer and club members alike, FunKtion Auto Group offers auto enthusiasts a multimedia experience for customers centered on racing events in its plasma TV surround-sound lounge.

"The need for FunKtion Auto was born out of frustration. True car enthusiasts have never been given the opportunity to be involved in the maintenance of their cars - until now," said Walid Achi, founder of FunKtion Auto. "We've created an environment where a customer who has a casual interest in the maintenance of their car can learn to drive, race and even purchase a race car if they so desire. In addition, FunKtion serves as a hub of activity for groups like the BMW and Porsche Clubs, who are looking for a place to gather for technical discussion or even to watch a Formula 1 Race."

FunKtion Auto Group has completely scrapped the industry standard of auto service and maintenance. While other dealerships discourage customers from speaking with service personnel or entering service bays, FunKtion Auto customers can speak directly with their service technician and receive a detailed, hands-on report about the needs of their domestic or foreign vehicle, removing the service manager or "middle man" from the automobile maintenance equation.

FunKtion offers a complete A-Z experience for day-to-day drivers and car-fanatics alike. Volvo Cars' Unveils All-New S80 at Geneva Motor Show
Geneva -: Volvo Cars is presenting the second generation of the Volvo S80, the company’s large prestige sedan. The all new Volvo S80 is a luxury car with an elegant and dynamic profile influenced by modern Scandinavian design. A high specification level and generous interior space allied to Volvo’s world-renowned seats and a wide range of intelligent functions combine to create a highly comfortable package with a solid aura of luxury.

The all new Volvo S80 is the same overall length as its predecessor (4850 mm), but it is 27 mm wider and 34 mm taller. Its wheelbase is longer and the track is wider too. All told this makes for entirely different proportions, with a more impressive stance and greater presence on the road. “Our design goal was that the all new Volvo S80 should express elegance, alertness and smooth movement,” says Steve Mattin, Design Director at Volvo Cars. “We aimed to achieve this with more rounded shapes, higher haunches and more sweeping lines.”

Solid and compact Volvo’s modern car models have a design featuring pronounced curvature at the corners to create a dynamic and compact impression and to reduce the risk of injuries to pedestrians. The new Volvo S80 is no exception. The entire front is gently rounded, without any pronounced corners. The bonnet too has more emphasised curvature and a higher profile to provide added pedestrian protection. The headlamps, which sit lower down than in the previous S80 model, follow the curvature of the front and stretch way out on the side and up towards the bonnet. “A bit like a smile,” comments Steve Mattin. “It helps give the car a positive expression.” The doors too are more rounded. The previous inward curve of the door panels has been replaced with a convex, more powerful profile. At the same time, the haunches are both higher and broader, reinforcing the solid and robust nature of the car’s design. What is more, the sills have a more pronounced profile that visually lowers the car and gives it a stable, self-assured stance. “The solid appearance gives the car an air of authority and dignity,” says Steve Mattin. “It also makes the car feel safe and reassuring to ride in.”

Sweeping lines and enhanced Volvo character In order to give the all new Volvo S80 the right aura of elegance and a sensation of agile motion, the car has more sweeping lines than its predecessor did. The tapered shape with the gently rounded front, sloping glass, almost invisible transfer from rear window to boot panel and the abruptly vertical tail create a sensation of speed. This has been further emphasised by the parallel profiles on the bonnet and the sweeping, clearly marked roof line which is created by two parallel lines. The elegant flowing lines are also aided by the C-posts, which have a visually slimmer appearance since the rear side windows are now framed by the rear doors. The entire side-glass panel is also framed by a chromed trim moulding. “Although the all new Volvo S80 is an entirely new car from the ground up, featuring an entirely new design, it is important that it should easily be identified as a Volvo,” says Steve Mattin. “That is why we have emphasised many of those elements that help create the special Volvo character.” The vertical radiator grille with its diagonal Volvo bar is there, further enhanced by being enlarged. The bonnet’s trademark V-shape has been extended all the way down to the spoiler. The tail lamps echo the design of the other cars in Volvo’s modern range, but their shape has been refined to create a somewhat lower profile that follows the broad shoulder line. LED lights at the top of the lamp units make it easy to identify the Volvo S80 from a long way behind, even in the dark.

Interior characterised by Scandinavian design influence The inside of the all new Volvo S80 reflects the elegant and luxurious exterior. It is characterised by clean surfaces, harmonious lines, exciting contrasts and smooth function – an expression of Scandinavian design tradition that helps create a dynamic and harmonious interior. The sweeping lines of the exterior are echoed in the car’s interior. “Just look at the upper part of the instrument panel,” says Steve Mattin. “To me it looks like an untouched snow-covered meadow. And that’s exactly what Scandinavian design is all about – inspiration from our natural surroundings.” As in the exterior, the sweeping contours are really two parallel lines that create a pronounced edge or profile. The same design language is found again in the door panels. Another consistent theme inside the car is the rectangular shape with rounded corners that characterises free-standing functions such as the ignition lock and air vents. And, as always in a Volvo, every detail has been meticulously designed in form and function and is optimally positioned to provide an ergonomic and comfortable driver’s environment. This is also an important prerequisite for safe, relaxed driving. Volvo’s modern, super-slim centre console, which was first introduced in the smaller Volvo S40 and V50 models, is one the most visual items of proof of the high level of Volvo craftsmanship. In the S80, the centre console has been tailored to suit the more classic and exclusive interior design. The console has also been extended so that it stretches all the way to the rear seat and hosts a number of smart functions for storing and connecting accessory equipment, such as an iPod or electric cooling box.

Ventilated seats Volvo’s front seats are regarded by many as the best on the market. They are designed to offer the best possible support and comfort, even on long trips. Power seats are available as an option. These can now be specified with perforated and ventilated leather upholstery. The seats are then equipped with fans in the seat cushion and backrest. The temperature in the seats is quickly lowered to a pleasant level, contributing to high seating comfort, particularly on hot days and in damp climates. The opposite function – heating in the front seats – can be adjusted to any one of three temperature settings. The rear seat too features heating. Seating comfort benefits further from extended legroom both front and rear compared with the previous S80 model. Hardened 5 millimetre thick side glass contributes to excellent sound damping inside the passenger compartment.

Clean Zone Interior Package – a world-first Volvo’s consideration also extends to the increasing number of people who suffer from over-sensitivity in various forms. Volvo is now launching its Clean Zone Interior Package, based on ECC (Electronic Climate Control) and IAQS (Interior Air Quality System). When the car is unlocked via the remote control, the passenger compartment is automatically ventilated for about one minute if the outside temperature is above 10 degrees Celsius. The Clean Zone Interior Package provides interior air that has been approved by the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association. The interior trim materials and components are selected to minimise emissions of harmful substances.

Personal settings The S80 driver has a wide range of possibilities for tailoring the car’s comfort features to his or her own needs and tastes. These parameters are set in the car’s information system. The menu covers features such as the seats, rear-view mirrors, climate unit, audio system, navigation and, to a certain extent, the car’s driving properties too. One new choice is automatic start of the rear defroster. When this function is pre-selected, the defroster is activated whenever the temperature is about 9 degrees Celsius. Another example is speed-dependent power steering. It is an option and can be set at a choice of three different power assistance levels, selected via the information system. “The wide adjustment scope contributes to the high comfort level of the new S80,” says Silvia Güllsdorf, S80 Project Director. “From the safety viewpoint, however, it is important that one does not spend too much time on the menu system while driving. In order to avoid distracting the driver’s attention from the road while driving, certain menu functions are blocked about 20 seconds after adjustment.

World-class audio system The all-new Volvo S80 can be equipped with one of the best audio systems in the world, Volvo Premium Sound. A digital amplifier from Alpine with Bang & Olufsen PowerHouse ICEPower® technology, Dolby® Pro Logic II Surround and loudspeakers from Dynaudio® of Denmark give an audio experience of the very highest premium level.

Cleveland Police Win Mercury Mariner Hybrid As Part Of Ford "Hybrid Patrol"
The Cleveland Division of Police (CPD) today received the keys to their new 2006 Mercury Mariner Hybrid as part of an award from the Ford Motor Company for helping boost consumers' fuel-economy awareness. The Ford Hybrid Patrol tour worked with hundreds of officers in blue across the country to boost their knowledge on becoming green with hybrid technology.

Last fall, 11 police departments from around the country participated in the Ford Hybrid Patrol, an educational tour on hybrid technology and fuel-saving techniques. Each participating department was entered into a drawing to win a new Mercury Mariner Hybrid. At the conclusion of the Ford Hybrid Patrol national tour, the CPD was randomly selected as the winner of the new premium compact hybrid SUV from Ford.

"We're very honored that Ford Motor Company selected the Cleveland Division of Police as one of its cities to showcase the Ford Hybrid Patrol," says Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath. "Our officers were really excited to participate in this innovative program. We will use the Mercury Mariner Hybrid as part of our accident investigation unit and we look forward to adding more hybrid vehicles to our fleet."

When the Ford Hybrid Patrol arrived at each city officers were enrolled in fuel-economy clinics and participated in driving challenges to discover the most "fuel-efficient" officer in Ford's hybrids. Of the 38 police representatives that participated in the fuel economy challenge, officers' fuel economy averaged 45.38 miles per gallon. The officer earning the best fuel economy from each city was then entered into a random drawing to win a 2006 Mercury Mariner Hybrid for their police department.

Taking the Ford Hybrid Patrol to the streets, police officers, with help from Ford hybrid engineers, went patrolling to give drivers citations for good driving behavior. In Ford hybrids outfitted for patrol, officers surprised thousands of local drivers "caught in the act" of demonstrating good gas-saving practices. Drivers were "ticketed" with $25 gas cards provided by BP and additional fuel-saving tips for efficient driving practices. Over the three-month national tour Ford and BP distributed over $65,000 worth of free gas to consumers.

"The Ford Hybrid Patrol was a great program that demonstrated our commitment to hybrid technology and the benefits our consumers can experience with these vehicles," says Nancy Gioia, director of Ford's Sustainable Mobility Technologies and Hybrid Programs. "With the success of the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids, we aren't letting up on our promise deliver more fuel-saving alternatives for our customers."

The Ford Hybrid Patrol tour was supported by BP and also rolled into Chicago, IL; the Boston suburb of Somerville, MA; Boston, MA; Alexandria, VA; East Point, GA; Phoenix, AZ; Los Angeles suburb, Glendale, CA; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA; and Miramar, FL.

"BP and Ford are working collaboratively on the development of more efficient engines and motor fuels," says Polly Flinn, president of BP's U.S. convenience retail operations. "Working together on the tour, we focused on fuel conservation which fits our shared vision of sustainable mobility solutions for our customers."

US administration extols automotive use of aluminium
In a visit last week to the headquarters of TRW Automotive Holdings Corp., U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta promoted automotive aluminium applications as a fuel- saving technology to be used by OEMs in response to demands for more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Steve Larkin, President of the US Aluminum Association commented that the U.S. Department of Transportation had recognized the value of aluminium and other high strength, low weight materials as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed structural changes last year to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations, using vehicle size, instead of weight, to determine the standards which regulate fuel economy and safety.

The final rule is expected to be issued in the next few months and NHTSA officials have been quoted as saying they chose size-based standards, in part, to create incentives to use high-strength, low weight materials.

The Aluminum Association will be making an announcement on March 7th documenting the worldwide movement by OEMs to ‘greatly increase’ aluminium use in automotive applications.

Infrared Goes Beyond Headlights
Infrared cameras are being offered to reduce vehicle accidents, but the likelihood that the technology will go mainstream isn't very high.

Driving between midnight and 6 a.m. is risky business, resulting in 20 percent of the fatal crashes even though the traffic volume is just three percent. While alcohol and fatigue have a lot to do with the increased accident rate, diminished visibility also is a major contributor.

This article from IEEE Spectrum explains the technical differences and advantageous between near and far infrared technologies currently being offered by Mercedes Benz and BMW.

Of course these systems require looking at a video screen to see what is further out, which has its own risks of distracting drivers. The best solution would be to project an enhanced image on the windshield itself from a camera mounted on the headliner.

But for the near term, I'd like to see adaptive headlights that automatically brighten in response to driving conditions. It's a pain to flip the brights off and on all the time, and we've all been on the receiving end of someone who forgets to turn down the high beams.

Accident Prevention Faces Obstacles
The European market for systems that sense obstacles in the road to prevent accidents is expected to grow by 26.7 percent over the next decade, according to analyst firm Frost and Sullivan.

Features such as adaptive cruise control, obstacle recognition that identifies vehicles or pedestrians entering the roadway, and blindspot cameras are becoming available in top-o-the-line vehicles, and will likely filter down to mid-priced vehicles during the next few years.

The challenge that these systems face is how active to make the prevention systems. Do you initiate braking or override the steering automatically, or are warning systems enough? Audio alerts such as "blindspot left" when you are about to change lanes or "pedestrian at intersection" or "red light 100 feet ahead" would greatly reduce the number of accidents without taking control away for the driver.

Speaking of red lights, I wonder how many accidents would be averted and gallons of gas could be saved if the traffic lights and vehicles talked to each other. Imagine if every light that you encountered on an otherwise empty highway was green, or if every approach to an intersection told your car how much time it would be before the red turned to green.

Stopping and waiting at lights unnecessarily wastes gas (unless of course you drive a hybrid), while not stopping when you are supposed to wastes lives.

Rockville City Police Department Outfits Metro Fleet with ICOP In-Car Video Systems
ICOP Digital, Inc. , a leading provider of digital in-car video systems for law enforcement, announced today that the Rockville City Police Department in Rockville, Maryland has ordered 40 ICOP Model 20/20(TM) units for fleet-wide deployment. The order, valued at approximately $220,000, will ship immediately.

Recognized as the third largest city in Maryland and located 15 miles outside of Washington, D.C., Rockville has a local population of nearly 60,000 and daily commuters into the city of an additional 40,000. Currently, the Rockville City Police Department operates a police vehicle fleet comprised of a mix of auto makes -- Ford Crown Victorias, Chevrolet Impalas and Dodge Chargers.

According to Dave Owen, Chief Executive Officer of ICOP Digital, "This installation in the Rockville City Police Department is an excellent example of the versatility of the ICOP Model 20/20(TM). Irrespective of auto make, the ICOP Model 20/20(TM) easily installs in the dash or console of every vehicle."

Rapid adoption of the ICOP Model 20/20(TM) by law enforcement agencies nationwide is being driven by both highly competitive cost and efficiency benefits afforded by the system. Noted for its ease of installation and servicing, the entire unit fits in the vehicle dashboard, replacing the radio unit (an AM/FM tuner is built into the ICOP product). Unlike competitive products, there are no parts in the trunk, under the seat, or overhead -- a critical point for officer safety. The rugged ICOP Model 20/20(TM) records using full-VGA, providing maximum image quality and integrity of data (preventing unauthorized access and editing of video files). For further precision, pressing the "Mark" button records exact event location for easy retrieval (using built-in GPS). The user-friendly ICOP Video Management System(TM) archives, searches, copies and displays two video images simultaneously. In addition, digital video footage can be readily formatted for the courtroom; converted to AVI (Windows Media Player(R)) and MPEG II(R) formats; or transferred to DVD, CD or VHS tape.

Continuing, Owen noted, "We are extremely pleased to welcome the Rockville City Police Department to ICOP's growing base of law enforcement agencies who have recognized the superior features and compelling value of the ICOP Model 20/20(TM). Representing our single largest sale to date, we view this order from one of Maryland's most distinguished police agencies as a very important endorsement of our technology."

"When officer safety, quality of evidence, system reliability and affordability are critical, ICOP Digital is not just the best choice, it is the only choice," stated Laura Owen, ICOP Digital's Chief Operating Officer.

Range Rover Sport Debuts on LeaseCompare.com's Top 10 List, Mercedes Disappears
CINCINNATI -: Automobile Consumer Services, Inc. (ACS), a leader in online direct-to-consumer auto leasing, released a list of the top 10 most requested vehicles from its popular auto leasing website LeaseCompare.com for the fourth quarter of 2005. For the first time ever Land Rover hit the top 10 with its hot Range Rover Sport model, and Mercedes makes a first by not having a single model represented on the New Car List.

A complete list of how every vehicle ranks can be found at LeaseCompare.com. BMW continues to dominate both new and used listings while the red hot Range Rover Sport makes its debut on the New Car List. Also back on the top 10 New Car List is the Honda Civic. Thanks to its all new design and high fuel prices, the Civic is another hot seller. The biggest surprise is Mercedes. It has completely fallen off the New Car List and only three remain on the Used Car List. This is probably due to its recent reliability problems.

"With the volatility of gasoline prices, leasing a car makes sense," says Tarry Shebesta, President of ACS and a certified lease consultant. "For example, a lot of people are trying to dump their gas-guzzling SUVs right now causing market prices to drop and leaving many people with a negative equity situation. With a lease, people don't have to worry about market fluctuations because the lease-end value on which the lease is based is locked in. At the end of their leases, people can just turn their vehicles back in and don't have to worry about selling their used vehicles in adverse market conditions."

Delphi Provides Advanced Collision Warning System For New European Ford Models
Delphi Corp. announced that it will provide its Forewarn(R) Smart Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning (with audible and visible warnings) and Collision Mitigation (by pre-charging the braking system) for Ford of Europe's all-new Galaxy and S-MAX family vehicles. Ford will market the optional system to customers as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Forward Alert (FA).

"We are very excited that Ford is taking this step to add even more safety to their new vehicles," said Rainer Hermeling, Delphi director of European customer region. "Delphi's Forewarn safety systems help give drivers more time to react to help avoid accidents."

Delphi's Forewarn Smart Cruise Control measures the distance and relative speed of the vehicle ahead using a radar sensor located in the front of the vehicle.

When Smart Cruise Control is engaged, it uses throttle control and limited braking to adjust vehicle speed to maintain a set time gap between itself and the vehicle in front of it (adjustable up to 2.5 seconds). This reduces the need to manually accelerate or decelerate with changes in traffic flow. If the lane ahead is empty, the vehicle maintains its cruising speed.

Delphi's Collision Warning System gives an audible and visible alert to help warn the driver should the driver get too close to a vehicle when cruise is disengaged. In addition, the Ford system's Forward Alert feature will pre- charge the brakes to help stop the vehicle as the driver gets closer to a potential collision.

Delphi introduced Smart Cruise Control in 1999 on the Jaguar XK.

No special drive: auto parts sector
While welcoming the broad thrust given to the manufacturing sector, the Auto Components Manufacturers Association (ACMA) felt that the Finance Minister had stopped short of making any specific announcement to promote the automotive sector.

The reduced customs duty — maximum level of 7.5 per cent — on key metallic raw materials and inputs for the auto-component industry would bring down input costs and encourage domestic value-addition and manufacturing. Mr Ashok Taneja, President, ACMA, however added that there was scope for further reducing raw material duties to Asean levels at 0-5 per cent.

He felt that the most significant announcement by the Finance Minister was the reduced excise duty on small cars to 16 per cent, a step which would propel India as a global manufacturing hub for small cars and directly enable the auto-component supplier industry to attain volumes and, hence, globally competitive scales.

The additional 4 per cent CVD on all imports is also a welcome move as it would level the playing field for domestic manufacturers to some extent, specially for sales in the aftermarket, Mr Taneja said.

However, he felt that the Finance Minister could have waited for 1-2 years to reduce the peak rates of duty from 15 to 12.5 per cent. With this reduction in customs duty on components, many key component systems attract much lower duty in India as compared to ASEAN countries, for example Thailand, he clarified.

Mr Baba Kalyani, Chairman, Bharat Forge: I am particularly happy that the automobile and auto component sectors have received greater attention. Specifically, reduction in excise duty on small cars is welcome and will greatly boost demand for automotive components. I would have liked this reduction to apply to a larger section of the automotive industry. The 180 SSI items to be de-reserved will hopefully include some automotive components.

Jay Galla, Managing Director, Amara Raja Batteries: said the company welcomes the reduction of excise duty on small cars, which will spur growth of passenger cars and the ancillary industries.

However, while the peak rate of customs duty on finished batteries has been reduced from 15 per cent to 12.5 per cent, customs duty on lead, the primary raw material has been left untouched. This has an adverse effect on the domestic battery industry as the duty differential between the lead and finished products has come down from 10 per cent to 7.5 per cent

Boost for auto sector
Mr Baba Kalyani, Chairman & Managing Director, Bharat Forge Ltd: I am happy with the emphasis that has been placed on stepping up investments in infrastructure, agriculture, urban development, education and health, and in the manufacturing sector. Manufacturing clearly is identified as a key driver of the national economy and I am particularly happy that the automobile and auto component sectors have received greater attention. Specifically, reduction in excise duty on small cars is welcome and will greatly boost demand for automotive components. I would have liked this reduction applied to a larger section of the automotive industry.

Gehl Company Reports Record 2005 Fourth Quarter and Annual Sales and Income
Gehl Company , today reported net income of $6.2 million or $.50 per share for the fourth quarter of 2005. This compares with net income of $2.9 million or $.29 per share for the final quarter of 2004. The 2005 fourth quarter was positively impacted by $.12 per share as a result of reversing, in full, a $1.5 million after-tax warranty charge the Company had recorded in its second quarter of 2005. Fourth quarter 2005 revenues were a record $108.7 million compared with $93.9 million in the same period a year earlier.

Annual revenues were $478.2 million in 2005, also a record level, compared with $361.6 million in 2004. Construction segment net sales increased 42% to $344.0 million for 2005, reflecting continued strength in the North American construction markets and share gains in European markets. Agricultural segment net sales increased 13% to $134.2 million in 2005. Compact equipment sales within the Agricultural segment increased 28% in 2005, while agricultural implement shipments declined 16% from the prior year. Compact equipment sales within the Agricultural segment grew to 70% of segment sales in 2005 versus 62% in 2004.

For the full year 2005, the Company's net income totaled a record $21.8 million or $1.97 per share. Comparable results were $13.4 million or $1.47 per share in 2004.

Key factors driving the increase in net income in 2005 included higher shipment volume, cost containment and effective pricing actions. These items were partially offset by higher net interest expense, due to higher average debt balances and higher interest rates in 2005 versus 2004, and higher expenses related to the sale of retail finance contracts.

"Our team performed extremely well in 2005," said William D. Gehl, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "They are successfully executing our compact equipment focused strategy, and it is reflected in our 2005 financial performance. We tightly managed our costs, introduced innovative new products, expanded our telescopic handler manufacturing capacity, invested in state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies and improved our capital structure."

Production of Mazda3 Begins at Changan Ford Plant in Chongqing
At a joint press conference held today, Mazda Motor Corporation, Ford Motor Company and Changan Automotive Group announced the commencement of Mazda3 production at the Changan Ford main plant in Chongqing. Immediately following the press conference, Changan Ford held a Job#1 (start of production) ceremony to showcase the first new vehicle that was produced. The kickoff of Mazda3 production represents another significant step forward in the cooperation between the three partners in China.

The ceremony that marked the start of production was attended by the Mayor of Chongqing, Wang Hongju, Chairman and President of the Changan Automotive Group, Yin Jiaxu, and Dr. Liuping Xu, president assistant of Changan Automobile Company's South China Group. Also at the ceremony were Kiyoshi Ozaki, senior managing executive officer in charge of Mazda's China business strategy, Phil Spender, president and CEO of Changan Ford, Noriaki Yamada, president of FAW Mazda Motor Sales Co. Ltd (FMSC) and employees of Changan Ford.

Mazda3 sales will be conducted through FMSC, a joint venture company that Mazda set up in March 2005 with one of Mazda's other partners in China, the First Auto Works (FAW) Group. Sales of the Mazda3 in China are scheduled to begin in the latter half of March 2006, with product and pricing details to be announced at a later date.

These developments are part of the increasing cooperation and long-term strategic partnership between Mazda, Changan and Ford in China. In September 2005, the three partners established a joint venture engine company in Nanjing and the plant is currently under construction. Also currently being constructed in Nanjing is a three-company joint venture vehicle assembly plant, which will produce Mazda and Ford-brand products. To further strengthen the three-party partnership, it has been agreed that Mazda will take an equity position in Changan Ford this spring. This step is presently under review by the Chinese government.

In line with the strengthened linkages among the three partners for the production and sales of the Mazda3 sedan, a basic agreement between the partners has been attained concerning Changan Ford's plans to take an equity position in FMSC at an appropriate time after the commencement of Mazda3 sales.

Kiyoshi Ozaki, senior managing executive officer in charge of Mazda's China business strategy, said, "The Mazda3 has received worldwide acclaim and won 60 awards to date; it is a key global vehicle that represents the best of the Mazda brand. The Mazda3 is a very 'Mazda' car, embodying our fun to drive, Zoom-Zoom brand message, and we're sure it will meet the expectations of our Chinese customers." Ozaki continued, "We would not have been able to set up the production and sales infrastructure for the Mazda3 without the great cooperation of our valued partners in China, Changan and Ford, which we deeply appreciate."

Mei-Wei Cheng, chairman and CEO, Ford Motor (China) Ltd., said, "With the help of our partners, we will do our utmost to forge a cooperative, mutually advantageous business model that integrates the corporate resources of Mazda and Changan Auto with the corporate strategy model that Ford has advanced in China to date."

In 2005, Mazda began full business operations in production and sales with its business partners toward achieving its mid-term goal of producing and selling 300,000 units in the Chinese market in 2010. Mazda, Changan and Ford are also progressing with plans for a new joint venture vehicle assembly plant in Nanjing; production is scheduled to begin in 2007. The new facility's initial annual capacity is 160,000 vehicles, with preparations underway to produce Ford and Mazda-brand products. In addition, a new engine facility, named Changan Ford Mazda Engine Co. Ltd, is under construction with a preliminary annual capacity of 350,000 engines. Scheduled to be operational in 2007, the new engine facility will primarily supply Mazda and Ford-brand high performance engines to the nearby Nanjing assembly plant.

Mazda also enhanced and strengthened its sales network in March 2005 with the establishment of the FAW Mazda Motor Sales Co. Ltd. (FMSC), in Changchun, Jilin Province, with another important business partner in China, First Auto Works (FAW). Also, in June 2005, Mazda opened its Shanghai-based company, Mazda Motor (Shanghai) Business Management & Consulting Co. Ltd.--more commonly referred to as Mazda China Operations (MCO) to integrate its business operations in China. Also in Shanghai, the Mazda China Engineering Support Center was set up as a branch office in August 2005.

In 2005, Mazda brand vehicle sales rose 51 percent year-on-year, to 133,778 units, amidst an intensely competitive sales environment in China, greatly exceeding the total market demand increase of 26 percent. Mazda's growth rate in China has exceeded the overall vehicle market growth ratio in China for four consecutive years. In 2006, the Hiroshima-based company aims to increase Mazda-brand vehicle sales in China by 10 percent over last year's results.

Motor Sports Stars Highlight Speed-Fest at Infineon Raceway
SONOMA, Calif. Race fans were able to rub shoulders, watch remote control car racing and even take a hot lap around the world-famous 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course with some of the biggest names in motor sports at Infineon Raceway's Speed-Fest on Monday under rainy skies in the Sonoma Valley.

Speed-Fest, which is the first of three promotional events designed for race fans as Infineon Raceway gears up for the upcoming Big O Tires Racing Season, attracted more than 300 race fans under blustery conditions, as well as the Indy Racing League's Dan Wheldon, NASCAR NEXTEL Cup's David Stremme, NHRA's Cory McClenathan, Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series' Scott Pruett and the AMA Superbike Series' Jake Zemke.

The drivers took part in a formal press conference in advance of the upcoming motor sports season at Infineon Raceway, but that wasn't all. They also swapped paint during a remote control car racing stunt, signed autographs for fans and even gave 75 lucky fans a lap around the world famous road course. The laps were given in exchange for fans donating one pint of blood to the American Red Cross, which held a blood drive on Monday at the raceway.

The festive day was particularly appealing for Stremme, a NASCAR rookie who had never seen the Sonoma Valley road course prior to Monday. He enjoyed getting the feel for the course while piloting fans around the circuit. He'll return for the Dodge/Save Mart 350 weekend, June 23-25.

"Scott (Pruett) took me out and gave me a few pointers on the track but you really don't feel it until you get out there yourself," said Stremme, driver of the No. 40 Coors Light and Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon Dodge. "This place is pretty neat, especially with the tight corners and elevation changes. It's going to be a challenge (in June)."

"The laps were really fun, and not just because of the track but he (Stremme) made everything comfortable for everyone," said John Seratt, a race fan from San Rafael who attended the event on Monday. "He made driving the track look easy; it was a great event."

It wasn't a challenge for Pruett, who has raced in Sonoma several times over the years, but this will be his first time at Infineon Raceway behind the wheel of the No. 01 CompUSA Lexus for Chip Ganassi Racing in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series. This will mark Grand-Am's first event in Sonoma when they share the weekend with the IRL at the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, Aug. 25-27.

"This is a great place and we're real excited to come out here with the Grand Am Series," said Pruett, a resident of Auburn in the Sacramento area. "I remember coming out here about 10 years ago and this wasn't the most desirable place, but so much work has been done here. It's one of the top facilities in the country and the race fans are going to really like this series. It's pretty exciting when that many cars (45-60) get on the track at one time."

Wheldon, the defending IRL IndyCar(r) Series champion and defending Indy 500 champion, was the star of the day, among both media and race fans, who braved rainy conditions. Wheldon, who will drive the No. 10 Target car for Chip Ganassi Racing in 2006, began his season with a victory in the Rolex 24 at Daytona (Grand-Am Series) in January.

"This track is a challenge, that's best thing I can say about it, and drivers like challenges," Wheldon said. "I think I speak for all the drivers (in the IRL) when I say we can't wait to come out here. It's a great racetrack and the fans have also been great."

Wheldon gave 25 fans the thrill of their lives on Monday, driving them around the serpentine circuit at speed in a street car.

"He (Wheldon) was very professional.I really enjoyed driving with someone who goes left and right," said Bill Shepard, a race fan from nearby Vallejo. "He answered everyone's questions and seemed very personable. It was my first time out for this event and I'm looking forward to next year."

McClenathan, who drives the Carrier Boyz FRAM Boost Top Fuel dragster in the NHRA POWERade circuit, also showed he can do more than drive a straight quarter-mile. He, too, gave race fans laps around the road course and even spent a good deal of time riding around Infineon Raceway's 16-turn, three-quarter mile karting track. McClenathan returns to Infineon Raceway on Saturday for the 4th annual NHRA Tour de Charity, which gives fans the chance to compete against NHRA stars like McClenathan, Ron Capps and Gary Scelzi in a full day of karting. Slots are still open for race fans and proceeds benefit Speedway Children's Charities.

"I always have a ball here, and while I know I can go pretty fast in a dragster, I can also drive a kart pretty well, too," McClenathan said. "It was great to hang out with the fans today, and I'm looking forward to the karting day on Saturday with Ron and Gary."

Zemke, a native of San Francisco, will ride the Honda CBR1000R when the Kawasaki AMA Superbike Showdown, presented by Supercuts, visits Sonoma, May 19-21. Zemke, who placed 11th in the Superbike points battle in 2005, said the CBR1000R is 14 pounds lighter this year, which could be helpful.

"The bike is definitely improved, but not redesigned,"he said. "We struggled a bit last year and were 11th in points but I'm looking for better things in 2006, and I'm looking forward to coming out here. At a time when we worry about dangerous tracks, this is one (track) that has become one of the more safer tracks over the last few years."

Speed-Fest is the first of three events for Ignition Tour 2006, designed to build momentum for race fans entering the upcoming season at Infineon Raceway, which begins May 12-14 with the Ferrari Challenge. Other upcoming Ignition Tour events include the NHRA Tour de Charity (Saturday) and Two-Wheel Thunder (March 17). Two-Wheel Thunder will be held during AMA motorcycle testing and is FREE to the public.

BMW chief sees solid 2006 results
BMW, the world's largest premium carmaker, is confident it will post solid financial results in the current year, its chief executive told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

Shares in the company were 2.3 percent higher at 40.92 euros by 1:16 p.m. British time, making them the best performers on the German blue-chip DAX index, which was 0.3 percent lower.

"We have a comparable situation as we did have in 2005. The exchange rates are not worse, the raw material prices are not worse, so we basically have the same challenge, but we managed to cope and to compensate (for) most of those challenges in 2005," Helmut Panke said.

"We're going to have basically the same starting position with no extra burdens on top. This is why we are quite confident that we are going to have a good year also in financials in 2006," the CEO added.

He also confirmed that the company had achieved its 2005 target of earnings roughly on the same level as the previous year.

BMW's sales and marketing chief, Michael Ganal, said at the motor show earlier on Tuesday that BMW's vehicle sales growth was expected to slow in 2006 from last year's 9.9 percent increase. But he did not give a specific target.

BMW had reported late on Monday that February group unit sales, including its Mini and Rolls-Royce brands, grew by a double-digit percentage. Group vehicle sales had gained 14.6 percent in January, flattered by weak 3-Series demand in the year-earlier month ahead of the model's March 2005 relaunch.

Panke said in January that the group aimed to post another record in deliveries this year.

BMW and German rival Volkswagen's Audi brand have been posting one record after another as European car buyers migrate away from the middle of the market, traditionally home to brands such as Ford or GM's Opel, towards either premium or low-cost value nameplates.

Chrysler Imperial On Track for 2010 Intro
DETROIT — The Chrysler Group is telling suppliers it has a new plan under which its controversial Imperial concept may see production in calendar-year 2010.

The surprise is the donor vehicle that Chrysler wants to use as the foundation for the production Imperial — the next-generation R-Class. Both vehicles, according to suppliers, would likely reach dealerships as 2011 models.

The Imperial concept, unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January, was huge. It rode on an ample 123-inch wheelbase and measured 214 inches long overall — considerably larger than any sedan Chrysler now builds, including the 300C.

The six-passenger R-Class, in comparison, measures 203 inches long, with a wheelbase of 126.6 inches. The current platform can accommodate a wide range of engines, including V6 and V8 diesels, as well as five-, six- and seven-speed automatic transmissions. The chassis is designed for rear- and all-wheel-drive applications.

Chrysler also is considering other platforms for a possible production version of the Imperial, including the LX/LY chassis that underpins the 300C. That platform, too, can accommodate both rear- and all-wheel drive, as well as V6 and V8 engines.

The Imperial concept featured a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and a Mercedes five-speed automatic.

History Lesson: Hungary Celebrates the Ford Model T
MAKO, Hungary — To commemorate the 125th anniversary of Jozsef Galamb's birth, the Hungarian National Bank has issued a memorial medal.

Hungarian-born Galamb participated in the design of the Ford Model T and later became first chief engineer of the U.S. automaker.

"Joe, I'd like to design a new car. Please prepare a few tools and bring along your blackboards," Henry Ford is said to have told the Hungarian draftsman in 1907. Galamb, together with a fellow Hungarian, Eugene Farkas, and Childe Harold Wills, managed to translate Henry's ideas into engineering reality and thus in 1908 the Ford Model T was born.

Later on, both Galamb and Farkas worked on the creation of the Fordson tractor. When the Ford Motor Company started distributing formal titles, Galamb became "chief engineer." In the 1920s, he assisted Edsel Ford in the design of the Model A, a replacement for the Model T.

But Galamb never forgot his Hungarian roots. He was born in 1881 in Mako, a small city in southeastern Hungary. While he worked abroad, Galamb assisted his family financially and visited his home country often. He retired after a 40-year career with Ford, died in 1955 and is buried in Detroit.

It will also set up a new engineering center in Shanghai as a joint venture to develop automotive exhaust products for its growing customer base in China.

The center, slated to open at the end of this year, will provide engineering resources to support Tenneco's equipment and aftermarket customers.

The company reaped US$41 million in revenue from its operations in Asia last year, a 30 percent increase year-on-year.

Meanwhile, China accounts for 31 percent of the company's revenue growth.

By 2015, the amount of vehicle production in China is estimated to catch up with the US automotive market, and Tenneco expects its sales revenue in China to maintain a 9 percent growth rate for the next four years.

China's auto exports totaled 170,000 vehicles in 2005, up 120.5 percent, and overtook annual imports for the first time.

Chinese based-companies currently export vehicles mainly to developing nations in Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Japanese auto maker Mazda Motor Corp. is planning to take a stake in Ford's auto joint venture in Chongqing, southwestern China, the China Securities Journal said on Tuesday.

Chongqing Changan Automobile Co. Ltd. board chairman Yin Jiaxu told reporters that Mazda's proposed stake would not diminish his company's 50 percent share in the joint venture, the paper said.

The joint venture, Changan Ford, would take a stake in a sales company jointly owned by Mazda and China's largest automaker, First Auto Works Co.

It did not give a size for the acquisitions.

Who's Driving When A Fatal Accident Occurs?
Parents are cautious when their teens hit the roads as new drivers, and for good reason. In a report published in January, AAA Foundation found that between 1995 and 2004, 15-17-year-olds were at fault for 68 percent of fatal crashes in the United States.

The AAA analysis also reported that those crashes claimed the lives of more than 31,000 people, with about a third being the teen drivers themselves.

"The tragedy of teen driver crashes goes well beyond the teen driver and their teen passengers," said Robert L. Darbelnet, AAA president and CEO. "These crashes also kill pedestrians and people in other vehicles - that's somebody's mother, child, brother or grandmother."

In an effort to reduce these accidents, Ford Motor Company is taking a comprehensive approach to teen driver safety - starting with its research. Its significant investment in the VIRtual Test Track EXperiment (VIRTTEX) has been used to test the effect of driver distraction on teens. (Ford is the only automaker in North America with a full-motion driving simulator. Through experiments, Ford engineers discovered that young drivers, while good with working and understanding electronic devices, are unable to multitask behind the wheel. Specifically, teens have a hard time staying attentive while using their cell phones, staying in their lanes and leaving enough distance between vehicles. Those are all examples of how accidents occur.

With the learnings gained from the VIRTTEX experiments, engineers are able to examine driving patterns, create safety features and highlight habits that need to be developed.

Education doesn't stop there. Ford also developed Driving Skills for Life, www.drivingskillsforlife.com, an educational campaign aimed at teens and parents, along with the driver educational community. This program focuses on four major skills that teen drivers typically lack: hazard recognition, vehicle handling, space management and speed management. In 2005, Driving Skills for Life supplied schools across the country with learning materials for their driver education programs.

And Ford is behind the wheel to protect its customers. Leveraging its research and knowledge, Ford has developed innovative life-saving technologies in its vehicles, such as AdvanceTrac(r), to help drivers stay safely on the road. AdvanceTrac uses seven sensors to monitor steering wheel angle, throttle position, wheel speed and other factors every seven milliseconds to determine if the vehicle is following the driver's intended path. Additionally, the company is working to bring lane-departure warning systems and driver impairment monitors to its vehicles.

Small cars in overdrive, foreign wheels hit curb
It’s party time for the volume vroomers in the car industry. Thanks to an 8% cut in excise duties on small cars, most models in the B-seg bunch will get cheaper by Rs 12,000-25,000. The reduction roster includes the Hyundai Santro, the Maruti M800, Omni, Alto, Zen and WagonR and the Tata Indica.

However, the hot hatch debutantes Swift, Getz and Aveo U-VA have been left out of the excise windfall thanks to bigger engines. Auto industry sources say this may result in car companies introducing lower displacement variants of super mini models. Hyundai, for instance, is reportedly considering both a diesel and a 1.1 litre petrol variant of the Getz. And Maruti will roll out its 1.3 litre diesel Swift later this year.

At the other end of the price spectrum, imported models like the Honda CR-V, Toyota Camry or Hyundai Terracan and Tucson will get dearer by anything between Rs 30,000 to 1 lakh on account of the 4% CVD slapped on all imports. Luxury marques like the Bentley and Porsche will see increases ranging from Rs 1 lakh-4 lakh.

The excise boon for small cars (not exceeding 4,000 mm in length and engine size not more than 1200 cc for petrol and 1500 cc for diesel) has left the industry sharply divided. While volume carmakers say it will improve growth by swelling the biggest sales segment in the market, others say it’s unfair. Says Arvind Mathew, MD, Ford India: “A level playing field is essential to encourage global manufacturers to participate more actively in India. An excise duty reduction across the board would have been aligned with India's globalisation actions.”

Dittoed Rajeev Chaba, MD, GM India: “We can't understand why there are two conditions—engine and length—for the differential excise duty. There are new technologies available which make higher displacement engines more fuel efficient so why have the engine cut-off?”

Indeed the 4% CVD will make spares and CBU imports more costly for high-end car makes says Suhas Kadlaskar of DaimlerChrysler India. So will it dampen demand of imported cars at the top-end? Unlikely say dealers given the price slabs these luxury badges sport. As for small cars, that segment could see some new players and models.

Says Jagdish Khattar, MD, Maruti Udyog: “This should encourage more players to enter the small car segment which should clock double-digit growth. It will also help in exports.”

Tata Motors cuts prices of Indica
MUMBAI: Tata Motors Ltd, India's number three car maker, said on Tuesday it would cut prices of its Indica models from March 1 following a reduction in excise duty in the federal budget for the year to March 2007.

The level of price reduction will be determined later, a spokesman for the company said.

Shares in Tata Motors, also India's top bus and truck maker, rose nearly 4 percent to an all-time high of Rs 816.

India's finance minister on Tuesday proposed to lower the excise duty on small cars to 16 percent from 24 percent to promote India as a hub for small cars. He also proposed a cut on duties on raw materials including steel, plastic and aluminium

Top car maker Maruti Udyog Ltd. said it would cut prices on five models by Rs 13,000 to Rs 22,000 ($293-495) and Korea's Hyundai Motor Co said it would cut the price of its best-selling Santro hatchback by Rs 23,000 ($518).

Small cars make up more than three-fourths of car sales in India every year, but only eight in 1,000 people owns a car.

Hella Supports Student Auto Technician Skills Competition
Hella's support of the national Student Auto Skills Competition will continue in 2006, according to Steve Hubble, president of Hella Electronics Corporation.

Since 1991, Hella has donated more than 10,000 automotive components worth more than $15,000 to the competition, which is co-sponsored by Ford Motor Company and the Automobile Association of America (AAA). Nearly 6,000 junior and senior high school students from 1,100 schools across the United States participate in the annual program.

"Vehicles have become so complex these days that you have to be a specialist to understand what's going on under the hood," Hubble notes. "As the older generation of auto mechanics retires, we need to demonstrate to students how important and financially rewarding careers in the automotive service industry can be."

There are three levels to the Auto Skills Competition: students must pass a written state qualifying examination; the two highest-scoring students from each school become a team and continue on to the state finals. Each state's championship team then advances to the national finals.

Schools may enter teams of two to eight juniors and seniors per full-time automotive instructor. The two students with the highest exam scores from each school move on to a "hands-on" state final held during April and May.

In the state finals, new Ford Motor Company vehicles are uniformly "bugged" with identical malfunctions to diagnose and repair. Repairs must be made with the highest quality workmanship in the quickest time. Each two- person state championship team is provided with an expense-paid trip to the national finals June 25-27 in Washington D.C.

At the national competition, contestants again take a written exam and participate in a "hands-on" competition. The team with the fewest quality-of- workmanship demerits and the best combined total score -- repair time plus written examination -- wins the competition.

Students, instructors and schools are eligible to win savings bonds, scholarships, trophies, jackets, certificates, shop manuals, trips, tools and automotive equipment. More than 4,000 contestants have gone on to work at Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealerships during the past decade.

Hella develops and manufactures components and systems for lighting and electronics for the global automotive industry. In addition, Hella joint- venture companies produce complete vehicle modules, air-conditioning systems and vehicle-electrical systems. Hella is one of the world's largest companies selling automotive parts and accessories, with its own sales companies and partners in more than 100 countries. Annual consolidated sales for the Hella Group total $3.7 billion.

Hella is one of the 100 largest industrial companies in Germany. A total of 24,000 people are employed in 65 production facilities, production subsidiaries and joint venture companies. More than 2,900 Hella engineers and technicians work in research and development across the Group. Customers include all leading automakers and system manufacturers, as well as the automotive aftermarket.

Price cuts galore on small cars
Carmakers Maruti, Hyundai and Tata Motors have decided to pass on the excise concessions announced in the Union Budget on small cars to consumers. Following a reduction in excise duty on small cars from 24 per cent to 16 per cent, the three companies have slashed prices of their small car models effective March 1.

Maruti, for instance, is reducing prices across five of its models — Maruti 800, Omni, Zen, WagonR and Alto - by Rs 12,704 to Rs 25,052.

Hyundai Motor India has decided to slash prices of its largest selling model Santro by about Rs 23,000.

Tata Motors has decided to cut the prices on the Indica's diesel and petrol range. "The company has decided also to cut prices of Indica Petrol range, even though the Indica Petrol range falls outside the defined norms in the Budget," the company said in a news release. Meanwhile, premium carmaker Honda Siel today said it has decided to pass on the benefit accrued from reduction in the peak rate of customs duty to the consumer. The company has slashed prices of the Honda City Exi and Gxi by Rs 2,000, and City Vtec by Rs 10,000. The price of the Honda Accord has been reduced by Rs 15,000.

Honda has, however, increased price of the sports utility vehicle CRV by Rs 33,000 because of imposition of 4 per cent CVD. General Motors has decided to drop prices of the Chevrolet Optra by up to Rs 20,000 following the drop in peak customs duty rate.

Toyota not to hasten small car launch
Toyota-Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has said the reduction in excise duty on small cars will not hasten the process of the company to launch its small car.

"We consider a variety of reasons including the choice of the customers before launching our project," TKM's Deputy Managing Director, Mr K.K. Swamy, told Business Line. He, however, said the company was disappointed with the Union Budget for not extending excise duty reduction to mid-sized and bigger cars.

"We cannot understand why cars above 1.2 litres have been exempted from excise duty cuts when almost every other sector has received the benefit," Mr Swamy said. He said with the usage pattern in the auto sector undergoing a change because of better infrastructure in the country, there was no reason in excluding certain cars from excise duty cuts.

Auto: Small just got more beautiful
The 8% excise duty cut on small cars benefits customers, but big car makers are seething.

With an excise duty cut on cars not above 4,000 mm in length and with engine capacities not over 1,500cc in diesel and 1,200cc in petrol, to 16 per cent from 24 per cent, small car buyers can walk away with reduced prices.

Maruti Udyog announced that they would be reducing the prices of five of their models by anything between Rs 13,000 and Rs 22,000. Hyundai Motor India also will be cutting the price of the Santro by around Rs 20,000-23,000 depending on the variant. Similarly, Tata Motors would be revising the price of the Indica shortly.

Jagdish Khattar, managing director, Maruti Udyog Ltd told Business Standard, “More players will come into the segment, who have not entered so far. So no one should expect a double digit growth in this segment next year.”

The reduction in excise duty by 8 per cent affects the Maruti 800, Omni, Alto, Zen, Wagon R, Hyundai Santro and Tata Indica, as only these cars that fall into the category defined by the Finance Minister in his Budget speech. And this has led to a cause for complain by the rest of the car manufacturers.

Rajeev Chhaba, president & managing director, General Motors India told Business Standard that GMI does not see a level-playing field anymore in India. He added that GMI, with the help of SIAM (Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers), will approach the finance minister for an excise cut on automobiles across the board.

“As far as the passenger car industry is concerned, the budget is not on expected lines. We have expected the excise duty to come down across the board on all cars and not on small cars alone. Apart from that, there is no mention of labour reforms in the budget. Overall customs duty reduction to 12.5 from 50 per cent may not be of advantage, since most of players have already localised their models,” he added.

Rajive Saharia, general manager-marketing, Honda Siel Cars India, said, “The rules of the game have changed in India. We have had uniform rate of taxes and it was the customer who decided on which car to buy going by his needs. Honda Siel depends on an upgradation process wherein people buy bigger cars from smaller cars. That step is going to be steeper now.”

He also added that with the arrival of a graded duty system, the demand pattern will change and Honda will have to address that.

With the excise duty cut, the Finance Minister hoped that this would lead to India becoming a small car hub for the world. But BVR Subbu, president, Hyundai Motor India said, ‘I was puzzled how the excise cut could help in making India a hub for small car diesel cars, as we are not making them globally.”

Other cars that can benefit from the reduction in excise duty include the Hyundai Getz, if it gets a 1,500cc three-cylinder CRDi engine and the upcoming Suzuki Swift with a 1.3 DDi common-rail engine.

Dongfeng Honda Completes Auto Plant Expansion
Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co., Ltd., the automobile production and sales joint venture of Honda and Dongfeng Motor Group Co., Ltd. in China, yesterday celebrated completion of the construction to expand its automobile plant in Wuhan, Hubei Province in China. The annual production capacity of the plant was quadrupled from the previous 30,000 units to 120,000 units. The commemorative ceremony was attended by some 500 dignitaries, guests and staffs including Mr. Yu Zhengsheng, the Secretary of the CPC Hubei Province Committee; Mr. He Guangyuan, the Member of the CPPCC; Mr. Luo Qingquan, the Governor of Hubei Province; Mr. Miao Wei, the Secretary of the CPC Wuhan City Committee; as well as Mr. Xu Ping, President of Dongfeng Motor Corporation and Mr. Atsuyoshi Hyogo, COO of China Regional Operation for Honda Motor Co., Ltd.

Construction for this capacity expansion project, a total investment of 2.8 billion RMB, began on January 24, 2005. Major construction activities included major changes in the layout of the existing plant facility, building a new paint facility, adding the processes of stamping and plastic injection molding in addition to upgrading facilities and equipment for existing processes (welding, painting, assembly). Further, R&D functions and Service Training Center operations were enhanced. The size of the plant building was expanded from the previous 43,000m2 to 219,000m2 while the lot size was also expanded from the previous 370,000m2 to 690,000m2. This construction project took only 12 months to complete, which is approximately 6 to 12 months shorter than the average construction project of this scale in or outside of China, enabling Dongfeng Honda to proactively respond to the continued growth of the automobile market in China.

Honda's "Green Factory"concept, which takes into consideration both the natural environment surrounding the plant and work environment inside the plant, was applied to this expansion project in various areas. Efforts to protect the natural environment include introduction of a new water-based paint system which will reduce emissions of hazardous substances (VOCs) to one-tenth of the current level; promotion of purification and recycling of wastewater; and reduction of electricity, gas and water use through improved efficiency of manufacturing processes. Regarding work environment improvements, a new transportation system that achieves a major reduction in noise and energy use was introduced, as well as lift assist devices that help associates in processes involving heavy components.

In spring of this year, Dongfeng Honda will begin production of the Civic, the global Honda car with cumulative worldwide sales of 16 million units. In the meantime, sales of CR-V, currently being manufactured by Dongfeng Honda, reached 26,244 units in 2005, and CR-V's market share in the SUV segment in China jumped from 6.7% in 2004 to 13.0% in 2005. Moreover, Dongfeng Honda's CR-V received the CCTV (China Central Television) SUV Award for two consecutive years and has won raves as the most welcomed SUV in the Chinese market.

In the area of sales, Dongfeng Honda plans to increase the number of its exclusive dealer locations to 140 by the end of this year while striving to provide sales and after-sales service with the highest quality in the industry. Through the establishment of manufacturing operations with an annual capacity of 120,000 units, Dongfeng Honda will further strengthen production and sales of passenger cars, including CR-V and Civic, in the years to come

Carbon fiber ramping up for planes, luxury cars
The Asahi Shimbun reported that three major carbon fiber suppliers are increasing production capacity to meet soaring demand from aircraft and luxury auto manufacturers.

The material weighs only half as much as aluminum but is 10 times stronger than steel. Those factors are critical for airlines, in particular.

Light weight means better fuel efficiency, which translates into big savings in the face of rising oil prices.

Global demand for carbon fiber is estimated at 25,000 tons. Some analysts expect that demand will grow to 40,000 tons by 2010.

Toray Industries Inc., Toho Tenax Co. and Mitsubishi Rayon Co. together control about 70 percent of the global market.

Industry leader Toray, which holds a share of about 30 percent, is the main carbon fiber supplier for Boeing Co.'s B787 next-generation passenger aircraft.

The U.S. company has won orders for more than 300 B787s, and Toray will supply about 30 tons of carbon fiber per aircraft.

By volume, carbon fiber composite materials account for about 50 percent of the B787, including the fuselage and main wings. The aircraft, better known as the Dreamliner, is due to launch in 2008.

Partly to fill that order, Toray is adding new production lines on its 860,000-square-meter factory in Masaki, Ehime Prefecture.

The company is investing about 25 billion yen on three production lines, two for carbon fiber and the other for sheet products.

"We can't reveal where (the lines are being installed), and of course, visits are prohibited," a spokesperson said.

Toray is apparently nervous about possible leaks because carbon fiber production requires high-level technologies.

The company is also spending about 8 billion yen on capacity expansion at its French factory.

When the expansions go into full operation, they will boost Toray group's annual production capacity to 13,900 tons, up about 50 percent from the current 9,100 tons.

The No. 2 player, Toho Tenax, is running its factory in Nagaizumi, Shizuoka Prefecture, at full capacity to produce carbon fiber mainly for Airbus SAS's A380 super-jumbo jet, which is scheduled to start commercial flights this year.

The Teijin Ltd. affiliate is supplying other sectors, too.

"Demand is strong for blades of wind-power generators and components of luxury automobiles," Toho Tenax Director Takashi Mishima said. "We can also expect demand for offshore oil field equipment."

The company is expanding its factories in the United States and Germany to raise its annual group production capacity to 7,800 tons in September, up from the current 5,600 tons.

Mitsubishi Rayon is also adding capacity at its factory in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, and its plants in the United States and France.

The company is aiming for an annual production capacity of about 8,000 tons by September 2007, up from the current 4,700 tons,

The carbon fiber manufacturers are being cautious about overproduction, however. They plan to supply only businesses with high profit margins, such as aircraft and high-end autos, at least for the time being.

The companies increased production in the late 1990s, leading to a supply glut and a substantial price drop.

In the future, the manufacturers expect to extend business to mass-production cars, saying that their next goal is to develop technologies that can produce carbon fiber in large quantities and at low prices

Fountain of Youth - Otto Motorsports Launches 2006 Season
SEBRING, Fla., - Explorers traversed Florida for generations in search of the fabled "Fountain of Youth". What they couldn't find in all of that time, Edgar Otto, Jr. uncovered behind the wheel of a 3500 pound stock car in Sebring Fla. just seven years ago. At 76, Otto is the oldest competitor racing in the Late Model Stock Car class of this weekend's Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) season-opening Sebring Endurance Challenge at Sebring International Raceway. The Boca Raton-resident sees the view from behind the No. 17 UrAssist "Freedom to Go" Chevrolet Monte Carlo- a car once driven in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series by Nextel Cup champion Matt Kenseth- as the ultimate time machine.

"Going fast keeps you young," proclaimed an exuberant Otto. "You're running away from father time in a NASCAR stock car. What could be more fun? We're all trying to outrace father time but how many of us get a chance to get in a race car and run away from him?"

Adding to Otto's thrill this weekend is the opportunity to race with his son, Wayne (50). Wayne races another former BGN contender, the Slim Jim Monte Carlo. The father-son combination, the only one of its kind in the Series, makes two parts of the three-part Otto Motorsports effort. The third leg being Pierre Molachek.

Otto will be making his 23rd HSR appearance at the famed Sebring race track. And, following his theory that you can outrun time, the Ernst & Young Florida Entrepreneur of the Year looks to be marching time steadily backwards as his lap times around the 3.7-mile facility plummet. For the son of a NASCAR "Founding Father" that was never allowed to drive in his youth, his speed has been a lifetime in the making.

"I'm going faster than I've ever gone," continued Otto. "It's amazing. I'm running up at the front of the pack now. I'm finishing better. I turned a lap in the fall race [last November] here equal to Wayne (two minutes, 14.8 seconds). That was about the sixth fastest time of anyone in the race. That is getting around that race track pretty quick for a 76 year-old. When I first started at Sebring I was turning 2:36, 2:27. So, I am getting better, faster each time out."

He approaches his hobby of outrunning father time in a serious manner. As Otto's skill improved, so did his equipment and support. Now racing a car designed and built for Busch Series road racing, he relies on professional mechanics as well. His crew chief is none other than former Bill Elliott chief Jimmy Barfield of Dawsonville, Ga.

"It's not often that an old man gets to know if he's slowed down or not," closed Otto on his face-to-face staring match with the clock. "So, when I get on the track this weekend, the clock will tell me whether Father Time is winning or not. I am going up there hoping that I am faster than last fall. But, I will know when the clock spits out the number. For me, its about a personal best because the clock tells you, unlike so many other things you do, whether you are still competitive or not. There aren't too many things in life that you can do to take your measure like driving a race car. I've got the records to prove that racing keeps you young."

Supercar Performance Heralds World Premiere of 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo in Geneva
ATLANTA Porsche 911 Turbo, which makes its public debut today at the Geneva Motor Show, combines the latest evolution of variable-geometry turbochargers and automatic transmissions to produce stunning standing-start acceleration figures. Equipped with the newly updated and optional 5-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission, the all-wheel-drive 911 Turbo will accelerate from a standing start to 60 mph in only 3.4 seconds. This is 0.3 seconds quicker than a 911 Turbo equipped with the standard 6-speed manual transmission. The impressive performance is due to close integration of the variable turbine geometry (VTG) system, the updated Tiptronic S transmission, and the new electronically controlled all-wheel- drive system.

Porsche's variable turbine geometry (VTG) setup on the 2007 911 Turbo was developed in close cooperation with Borg Warner Turbo Systems, and is based on technology which has been widely and successfully applied to diesel engines since the early 1990s. It is nearly identical in concept to other turbo manufacturers' variable nozzle/geometry compressors, including a system that was briefly used on a series gasoline production engine in the late 1980s. This application encountered difficulties due to high operating temperatures -- a problem not easily solved with contemporary materials -- and production was stopped after a limited run.

After nearly two decades, aerospace-grade materials have allowed the progression of variable-geometry turbo technology to the point that it can now reliably operate in the higher-temperature environment of turbocharged gasoline engines. Porsche's version of variable turbine geometry in the 2007 911 Turbo incorporates these latest material applications, plus a sophisticated control algorithm. The combination produces the advantages of both small and large turbochargers, generating a much wider plateau of torque and providing quicker response compared to the previous generation 911 Turbo, while providing the reliability of fixed-vane turbochargers.

Improvements to the Tiptronic S transmission in the latest 911 Turbo contribute to the performance gains by allowing an earlier ramp-up of boost pressure when 'brake-torquing' the transmission, and new tuning lets more torque accumulate while the brake pedal is held. Other improvements reduce the time required for the transmission to react to driver inputs, and produce quicker shifts.

If launched appropriately, a 911 Turbo equipped with Tiptronic S is essentially "pre-tensioned" at the starting line, and during acceleration runs, power-interruptions are reduced in comparison to the 6-speed manual transmission. Aiding acceleration, when paired with Tiptronic S, the all- wheel-drive system with PTM can deliver a nearly uninterrupted flow of torque to all four wheels.

The optimized interaction between the new all-wheel-drive system, Porsche Traction Management (PTM), Tiptronic S five-speed automatic transmission, and Tiptronic-specific calibration of the engine management controls and associated variable turbine geometry (VTG) system, allows the new 911 Turbo with Tiptronic S to accelerate slightly quicker than models equipped with the manual 6-speed transmission.

In terms of providing performance to our customers, the Tiptronic S transmission has made the prodigious abilities of the 911 Turbo more accessible to a wider range of customers. In its evolution, the Tiptronic S now provides certain areas of strength in relation to the 6-speed manual, particularly in standing start acceleration numbers, an area of quantified performance that grows more challenging as peak horsepower levels continue to escalate.

Volvo Creates Robotic System for Test Track Environment
Irvine, CA -: Volvo vehicles are known for their ruggedness, durability and of course legendary safety. What may not be known is the Swedish marques' use of electronic robotic vehicle testing versus good ole carbon-based life forms (humans). Towing tests are an important part of Volvo's rigorous durability testing, and probably the only manufacturer to have its own range of trailers plus robotic control driving management system.

Favorable characteristics for any tow vehicle are: good engine performance with high torque at low rpm, coupled with smooth shifting transmissions, positive steering control, suspension attributes, and, of course braking systems are all key elements to towing performance and safety.

Vehicle attributes The vehicle's suspension must not be too soft, preferably level, when towing as the angle of the car's wheels and therefore its grip on the road can change under heavy rear-end focused loads. "We need to look at many different vehicle attributes, while towing different kinds of loads, and the best towing test driver runs on 12 volts," according to Stefan Svensson who is responsible for vehicle dynamics at Volvo Car Corporation, Sweden. "When test towing, you should always try to maintain a steady course and avoid unnecessary movements of the steering wheel. Our robotic control system is accurate 100% of the time.

Robotic system Volvo uses robotic controls to avoid inconsistent or subjective behavior when test towing. From human to human test driver, there are so many variations. And when coupled with different towing loads, road conditions, weather conditions, time of day, and differences in vehicle dynamics (i.e. throttle position, steering wheel movement, and braking), accurate measurements are nearly impossible. "What we needed to achieve was consistency in as much of the testing program as possible. By removing our human test drivers, we're much closer to gathering true empirical data than ever before." according to Stefan. "Our robotic control system can run the course the same exact way….every time. We can even program the system by adding in over-control to create an unstable trailer, which is something we want our test engineers to experience."

New ISO standard Volvo helped create a new ISO standard for towing tests which involves measuring the lateral acceleration of the trailer, the angle between the car and the trailer, the angle of the steering wheel, the yaw angle and actual vehicle speed. All measured values must be within certain criteria for the car to be approved by Volvo. "The new ISO test standard is an off-shoot of our own internal testing criteria," according to Stefan, "Seems we're on the right track, considering ISO is using our methodology as a benchmark for new standards."

Extreme durability tests Volvo has two extreme testing facilities. From bitter winter cold in Sweden to blistering summer hot in Death Valley, California, they use an armada of about 35 trailers ranging in size from 1,500 pounds to nearly 4,400 pound Volvo is prepared to run the tow testing gauntlet. If that's not extreme enough, Volvo uses the 'hill from hell' in Death Valley which is a 14 mile, 7% grade usually where July temperatures run 115 degrees. "That's 115 degrees air temperature, black pavement is much hotter." comments Stefan. "This is a great test for our engine cooling system."

Towing capacities Volvo tow hitches are tested to the same extremes as its vehicles. All Volvo's are factory pre-adapted for tow hitches with anchorages engineered into the vehicle platform. For each model there is a match tow hitch with the following capacity ¹:

S40 2,000 pounds and 165 tongue weight V50 2,000 pounds and 165 tongue weight S60 3,300 pounds and 165 tongue weight V70 3,300 pounds and 165 tongue weight XC70 3,300 pounds and 165 tongue weight S8 3,300 pounds and 165 tongue weight XC90 5,000 pounds and 500 tongue weight

Volvo has been building cars with Safety in mind for over 75 years. The current 2006 model line-up of Volvo Cars includes: the award-winning new S40 and its wagon counterpart the all-new V50; the award-winning XC90; the sporty S60 sedan – including the award-winning performance sedan – S60 R and the performance wagon version – V70 R; the S80 luxury sedan; the versatile V70 wagon and rugged XC70 (Cross Country); and the soon-to-be released new Volvo C70, the convertible with the innovative retractable hardtop.

Mercedes-Benz in the Comics
Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, Actros and "Fintail" models have all made a name for themselves as fictional heroes as well as top performers in real life. Over recent decades, comic-books have offered a fascinating slant on the history of the Mercedes-Benz brand. Indeed, a Mercedes appeared in the first ever "Tintin" book, published in 1929, since when numerous albums and series have inadvertently helped compile an illustrated encyclopedia of Mercedes-Benz vehicles. From exquisite vintage models to dependable taxis, elegant sports cars to prestige sedans, the qualities of the Stuttgart-based manufacturer have been highlighted in a variety of comics. Some the stuff of enthusiasts' dreams, others an integral feature of everyday life, Mercedes automobiles have become ingrained in the psyche and landscape of both real-life cities such as Brussels and fictional towns like Duckburg.

Scrooge McDuck, the world's wealthiest drake, was one of the original car enthusiasts. In the comic-book story "Chugwagon Derby" by Carl Barks the feathered billionaire even claims to be one of the first ever owners of an automobile - and one built personally by Gottlieb Daimler at that. In Guido Scala and Bruno Concina's comic "100 anni dell'automobile", meanwhile, Scrooge's nephew Donald sets out on a journey in Daimler's motorized carriage of 1886. And the younger duck has total confidence in the 100-year-old machine, backing it - as a genuine Daimler - to cover the 300-km journey with ease. Legendary duck and vintage carriage duly arrive safe and sound at their destination.

The relationship between comic-book writers and cars goes back a long way, automobiles cropping up frequently in popular albums - and not just to celebrate the anniversaries of Daimler and Benz' inventions. Fascination with technology and a passion for automotive details left their mark most notably on European series over the second half of the 20th century. Comic-books may have their roots in the USA but, ever since the arrival of "Tintin", there has also been an extremely lively comic culture in France and Belgium in particular, as well as in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Spain. Mercedes-Benz duly took its place in the comic avant-garde (e.g. in Matthias Schultheiss' "Night taxi"), left-wing underground titles - such as "Flucht aus Berlin" by Gerhard Seyfried - and above all in numerous adventure series and detective titles. You can find examples in almost every genre of modern comic-strips - with the exception only of stories set in the dim past or distant future.

Keen readers of these addictive adventures will have noted how an extensive illustrated encyclopedia of automotive history has taken shape on their pages. And models from Mercedes-Benz are frequently to be found. Examples range from the A-Class to heavy-duty trucks and from the birth of the automobile in 1886 to the very latest models. As taxis with the Mercedes three-pointed star on the radiator have proved to be a reliable form of transport for numerous passengers both in Europe and the other continents of the world over the decades, so they have earned a similar status in comic-books. And every bit as international is the passion for the brand's exquisite SL sports cars. Arguably no other auto-maker is represented in comic-books on a similar scale. The range of models featured, the purposes they are used for, the generations of models on show and the countries where they are depicted is truly extraordinary. The scope of this presence is particularly noticeable when compared to the much less frequent inclusion in comic-books of other German cars, with the possible exception of the VW Beetle.

Post-1945 Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and commercial vehicle models have become a particularly ubiquitous presence on the pages of comic-books. Mercedes' record as a star of the comic-strip extends right from the appearance of a Mercedes-Benz 170 V (W 136 series) passenger car in a dark adaptation of the "Der Richter and sein Henker" to the inclusion of present-day models in recently-published albums. The "I.R.$." stories by Bernard Vrancken and Stephen Desberg and the seven-book "Le Triangle Secret" series both see Mercedes-Benz sedans and sports cars taking prominent roles. And trucks from the 1940s were also given a taste of the limelight by comic creators such as Dupa, who featured long-hood drawbar combinations in his "Cubitus" album "Alerte au Pédalosaure". However, the first Mercedes-Benz to grace the pages of a modern European comic - in a 1929 issue of "Le Petit Vingtième" - was driven by a young reporter who was to become one of the best-known comic-book figures of all time: Tintin.

The early days: Tintin the Mercedes driver

Franco-Belgian comics have arguably seen the relationship between comic and automotive culture at its most productive. Here, the seeds were sewn - in the shape of Hergé's first "Tintin" adventure of 1929 - for the development of a comic tradition which frequently blended background drawings based on aspects of real life with abstract figures from the creators' fertile imagination. The portrayal of automobiles - trucks or roadsters, taxis or vans - is one area in which the illustrators have often given free reign to their passion for detail.

The first car in which Hergé featured his soon-to-be-famous young reporter was a Mercedes. In 1929 Georges Remi (the illustrator's real name) sent his new hero off on a journalistic assignment to the Soviet Union. In Berlin, Tintin swaps his seat on the train for the wheel of a Mercedes, swiped from under the noses of the police. That early cheek was to become the exception rather than the rule, though, as Tintin took on an altogether more serious persona. PHOTO (select to view enlarged photo) Chase in a taxi: Mercedes-Benz W 123 in André Franquin's "La boîte noire".

But it wasn't only the character of the protagonist which experienced an about-turn, the style of Tintin's illustrator also changed in nature. Hergé's early work had little in common with the highly detailed and exquisitely produced comics which were to seal his fame as the founder of the "ligne claire". Having said that, the scene of Tintin on his high-speed dash in the 1920s Mercedes 15/70/100 PS (built as the Mercedes-Benz 400 from 1926) leaves little doubt as to the identity of the car. From the pointed radiator to the Mercedes three-pointed star, not yet encircled in the ring familiar today, Hergé ignored none of the car's hallmark details in his otherwise heavily simplified sketches. Among the other Mercedes-Benz models given center stage by the illustrator were the "Ponton", 300, 190 SL roadster and L 319 van - a line-up brought back together for a nostalgic reunion at the "Rallye Tintin" in Brussels in July 2005. Also in attendance at the rally was a 1925 Mercedes 15/70/100 - bearing the number 1 to befit its status as the first vehicle driven by Tintin - from the Mercedes-Benz Museum's own collection. A keen sense of history was also shown by the participants in the rally who turned up in Mercedes-Benz 190 SL roadsters with the number 11 prominently displayed on the doors, in homage to the 190 SL which Hergé included in the climax to the "Red Sea Sharks" story.

It was no more than a few years before the comparatively rough sketches of the first adventures had evolved into extremely intricate illustrations. And Hergé soon perfected this attention to detail. Indeed, the Belgian master added two revised versions of the "The Black Island", motivated by - among other things - a desire to update the features of a fire engine. Hergé set new standards with his ability to reproduce vehicles with great accuracy and went on to provide illustrations for adverts for French automobiles later in his career.

Mercedes-Benz was among those keen to latch onto the relationship between comics and advertising. For the presentation of the Viano in the Rheingau region of Germany, Michael Apitz and Patrick Kunkel - the men behind the comic series "Karl" - created a special-edition comic starring the new model alongside their hero.

A passion for detail: The beauty of the "Fintail" PHOTO (select to view enlarged photo) SLK meets S-Class: The R 170 and W 140 series in "De cendre et d'or" from the "Le Triangle Secret" series.

The ranks of illustrators have spanned many different genres and styles, but Mercedes-Benz models have been a common feature across the comic world. Indeed, many artists have made even more prominent use of them than Hergé. The black paintwork of a Fintail, for example, shines out in almost cinematic wide-angle splendor from Seron's "Les Petits Hommes", while André Franquin lays on a "who's who" of Mercedes models - from the "Ponton" to the W 124 - in his "Spirou and Fantasio" and "Gaston" series. The "Michael Vaillant" racing driver comics, meanwhile, see the C 291 Class C racing sports car and McLaren Mercedes' Formula One racer bring a dash of glamour to proceedings alongside the dependable, but more prosaic sedans.

Despite the detailing, comics do not always display full views of the sedans and trucks, the vehicles often cut off by the borders of the picture panels to leave the reader mired in a guessing game. The hallmark stylistic feature of Mercedes-Benz sedans is, of course, the three-pointed star on the radiator. However, when Franquin blurred out the front end of a W 116 for a dynamic driving scene in the "Gaston" album "Le gang des gaffeurs", the car's identity still remained as clear as day. Indeed, even when the star is not there as a giveaway clue, there are still any number of timeless design details which quickly highlight the car as a Mercedes-Benz. The striking rear end of a W 110, for example, was also featured in "Gaston" - if only as a shadow. It does, though, require rather greater knowledge of the brand's products to single out the steering wheel with central three-pointed star depicted on a page of the Italian comic "Dylan Dog" as belonging to a W 201.

The beauty of the Fintail models and the brute strength of the Unimog in comic adventures of yesteryear retain an appeal which extends beyond the ranks of classic car enthusiasts. And the semitrailer tractors and sedans, sports cars and vans with the three-pointed star are more than merely props or background decoration as the plot unfolds in front of them. Instead, they have their own stories to tell and are an expression of the technical development, advances in mobility and attitudes to automobiles which characterize their particular era. In contrast to American super-hero stories - with their fantasy cars - and blithely abstract takes on the automobile in series like "Fix & Foxi", comics with reality-based illustrations present the automobile as a commentary on its time, with all the associations which a particular vehicle conjures up. As a result of having such a wide spread of models across all areas of personal and goods transportation, Mercedes-Benz will inevitably figure frequently in comics.

The various automobiles depicted in comics can be grouped together according to the decade and model series involved. For example, comics from the 1950s focused on the beauty of the SL models. The "Ponton", on the other hand, was the first Mercedes sedan after the Second World War to win over drivers around the world as a modern and sensible car. And the W 100 launched in 1964 made its name in Europe and the Middle East in equal measure as an extremely prestigious state limousine. Spanish comic author Francisco Ibáñez Talavera caricatured the opulence of the W 100 in his "Mortadelo y Filemón" series, adding a new item to the equipment list: "chauffeur in various trim variants: formal, sports or business".

Their appearances in comic-books showed Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles in a similarly international light. The Unimog, for example, can be spotted in French ports, serving the fire brigade in Great Britain and on international rallies. And then there is the classical short-hood truck, which established itself as the modern template for truck design in 1959 at the expense of the old models with long hoods. For a long while after it went out of production, this type of truck continued to serve as a reliable load-lugger in modern-day comics, at work in the African desert, for instance, and negotiating precarious mountain passes in South America.

"Where to sir?" - Mercedes sedans as taxis PHOTO (select to view enlarged photo) Pièce de resistance from the mid-sized series: Mercedes-Benz W 123 in a golden livery from the album "Michael Vaillant: Le sponsor".

However, the most common use of Mercedes-Benz sedans in comics has been as taxis. The "Ponton" is a good example, taking passengers to and fro in both Franquin's Spirou album "Z comme Zorglub" and the Monika Morell book "Le Fils d'Inca" by Marc Wasterlain. The small W 110 "Fintail", meanwhile, transports Spirou and Fantasio safely to the airport in "Le Gri-Gri du Niokolo-Koba". And two W 124 taxis with light-colored paintwork and the black and yellow sign on the roof appear in the comic parody featured in German TV soap opera "Lindenstrasse". Plus, Monika Morell herself enjoys a journey in a luxurious W 116 S-Class taxi in two of her adventures.

The Dutch comic artist Henk Kuijpers has effectively put together an almost encyclopedic history of modern Mercedes taxis in his "Franka" series. Among the taxi models featured are W 123, W 116, W 126, W 124 and W 210 sedans.

Although police detective Franka was a frequent passenger in Mercedes sedans, it is another German comic-book which really stands out from the crowd in its representation of Mercedes-Benz sedans in service as modern taxis. First published by Carlsen in 1990, Matthias Schultheiss' "Night taxi" was a decidedly dark, melancholic story, in which a W 123 played the lead role. Schultheiss' avant-garde creation recounted the experiences of female Hamburg taxi driver Leo and her Mercedes. The car and its driver experience fluctuating emotions as they travel through the night. The sedan makes its way patiently through dreams and demons, the empty feeling of the early morning hours and the rain-soaked tarmac of dark evenings.

However, the role of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in comics is not purely as a means of transport for individuals. The history of buses and coaches at the brand unfolds on the pages of comic-books with vehicles ranging from an early Mercedes bus to the comfortable O 317 regular service bus featured in various titles. In their "Valérian et Laureline" album "Sur les terres truquées", Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres cast an imposing model from yesteryear (with oversized brand badge on the radiator grille) as the only motorized vehicle in a city dominated by pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages. The modern O 317 urban bus presented in 1957, on the other hand, was part of a smooth-running urban public transport system in the "Natacha" story "La ceinture de Cherchemidi".

A vintage Mercedes-Benz model is the jewel in the crown

"Ja, z'est izi": The plain-clothes men from the small state of Bretzelburg drive a Tailfin Mercedes-Benz and speak French with a terrible German accent in André Franquin's album "QRN sur Bretzelburg".

In André Franquin's Spirou album "Panade à Champignac", automotive enthusiast and collector Comte Adhémar des Mares-en-Trombe suffers a bitter loss when his mint-condition 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540 K is stolen. With his baggy cardigan and pipe, the Count strikes a rather less aristocratic figure than his title suggests - but in his love for classic automobiles he positively oozes class and polish. His passion for vintage cars is highlighted when he tells a friend and fellow nobleman about the theft, recounting how the shining light of his collection had been spirited away. Of course, the climax to the book sees the Count reunited with his red roadster with light-colored roof and white-walled tires - thanks to amateur detectives Spirou and Fantasio. One memorable scene is set in the courtyard of the Count's estate, where the mechanics are hard at work maintaining and polishing the collection of historical cars.

The Count in the fictional village of Champignac is not the only classic car owner to discover that vintage car collections also attract the attention of more unscrupulous enthusiasts. The father of British secret agent Percy Pickwick also falls victim to car theft, when his classic MG goes missing. When Pickwick junior and senior eventually apprehend the thief in Turk and de Groot's story "Roue Libre", it turns out that he has not only made off with Britain's finest, but also a magnificent Mercedes-Benz 770. Produced from 1930, the W 07 was better known as the "Super Mercedes".

The mysterious Démonia in the Benoît Brisefer story "Le fétiche" is chauffeured around in a cabriolet version of this renowned model. Given the shady activities of her gang, readers of Peyo's adventure could be forgiven for thinking that this beige and black classic had also been stolen from a collection. PHOTO (select to view enlarged photo) Mercedes-Benz 540 K in scene from "L'affaire Bugatti" by Jean Graton.

The 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540 K depicted by Jean Graton in his Michel Vaillant story "L'affaire Bugatti" is rather more above-board - the white roadster is part of the Schlumpf Collection at the National Automobile Museum of France. For all visitors to the Museum, the Mercedes-Benz represents a milestone in the "wonderful history of the automobile". Racing driver Steve Warson and his family would certainly agree, as they feast their eyes on the Stuttgart-built roadster. Whether it be here or under the drooling gaze of Scrooge McDuck, Daimler-Benz is recognized as a pioneer of automotive development. Graton mixes this historical side of the story with a passion for the technical wizardry underpinning the automobile on display at the museum.

Adventure and elegance: The Mercedes-Benz SL models

Nobody drives a stylish sports car through the jungle of Palombie quite like Fantasio's venomous cousin Zantafio. Franquin allows the villain in his album "L'ombre du Z" the pleasure of a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL roadster (W 198 II), showcasing the sports car's breathtaking bodywork from various different perspectives. While the end of the Spirou and Fantasio adventure sees the crook put out of business, the beauty of the roadster remains gloriously untarnished. Authors Tibet and Duchateau also enrolled the 300 SL for comic-book duty, the legendary Mercedes this time earmarked for a high-speed dash over spectacular Alpine passes as part of a Rick Master adventure.

The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL established a far more relaxed niche for itself by comparison, frequently presented as a sports car for high-class cruising. In "Les pirates du silence", the W 121 roadster was a key element in Franquin's high-tech vision of the city of the future. And while Dupa depicts a 190 SL gliding its way through the urban sprawl in his Cubitus album "Chien sans souci", Hergé brings his Tintin adventure "Red Sea Sharks" to an end with a white SL 190 taking its place in a rally in the grounds of Marlinspike Hall.

Of the more recent SL models, the C 107 coupe has been a particularly popular comic-book protagonist. The "Michel Vaillant", "Yoko Tsuno", "Spirou and Fantasio" and "Cubitus" series were all frequent hunting grounds. For his part, Henk Kuijpers has incorporated both the C 107 (in "Het Meesterwerk") and the later R 129 (in "De blauwe venus") into his Franka books. The smaller Mercedes-Benz SLK (R 170) roadster, meanwhile, is piloted by the sophisticated French historian Didier Mosèle on his quest to find the secret of the Templars in the "Le Triangle Secret" series.

Fighting fires, saving lives: Mercedes-Benz and the emergency services PHOTO (select to view enlarged photo) Fire-fighting short-nose truck: In Amsterdam, the fire brigade arrives on the scene of a fire with a turntable ladder on a Mercedes-Benz chassis in the Franka album "De Terugkeer van de Noorderzon".

The role of Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles in comics has been rather more functional than breathtaking, transporting goods and helping out with the emergency services. On the one hand, the vans, Unimogs and trucks from the Stuttgart-based brand are seen providing transportation as tow-trucks or with elevating platforms attached to them. On the other, the short-hood models in production from 1959, the LP (from 1963) and the NG (from 1973) have all seen action for the fire service as part of dramatic storylines. In his Franka books, Kuijpers drew his Mercedes vehicles with rotating ladders, telescopic masts and fire extinguishing equipment, as well as in their guise as out-and-out fire engines. And in the Percy Pickwick album "Jade", the British fire service arrives to tackle a blaze caused by an explosion with a fire engine based on the Unimog. In the Franka book "Het portugese goudship", the emergencies summon an ambulance based on the T1 van, while in another Franka album - "De dertiende letter" - an ambulance based on an S 124 chassis responds to the call.

As well as proving their value in saving lives and putting out fires, Mercedes-Benz vehicles have also made their contribution to law enforcement - the Belgian police in Dupa's Cubitus series, for example, can call on an impressive patrol car based on the W 116. Berlin-based comic-artist Gerhard Seyfried, meanwhile, created a satirical monument to the Berlin police force's personnel carrier - based on the L 406 van and known as the "bath-tub" - in titles such as "Flucht aus Berlin". And in the Monika Morell book "Le Fils d'Inca", the police call up a T1-series personnel carrier from their fleet.

"VROOOOAAW" - car racing, from the track to the desert

There's no time to waste as the Silver Arrow driven by Jackie Ickx comes in for a pit stop. The Mercedes-Benz racing team goes to work, everything is running to plan. The men in silvery-gray overalls check the final details and the C 291 Group C racer is ready to rejoin the action out on the track. PHOTO (select to view enlarged photo) Silver Arrow with a thundering bass voice: Mercedes-Benz C 291 in the Michael Vaillant album "Une histoire de fous".

These are classic scenes from Jean Graton's Michael Vaillant series. In his comics, the illustrator sent racing cars like the C 291 (featured in the story "Une histoire de fous") and the McLaren Mercedes Formula One car (in "Le sponsor") onto the world's greatest race-tracks alongside his fictional marque "Vaillante". Graton's allegiance to the Stuttgart-based manufacturer ran beyond his passion for fiction into his private life back in reality. The comic-artist's favorite seat was at the wheel of SL sports cars and he even successfully defended his Mercedes-Benz 500 SLC against armed car thieves back in the 1990s. PHOTO (select to view enlarged photo) Dashing road-going sports car: Mercedes-Benz 300 SL coupe from "Michel Vaillant: Le circuit de la peur".

As well as starring in races on legendary asphalt circuits, Mercedes-Benz extended its motorsport history in comics into rally racing. Illustrators like Marc Wasterlain (in the Monika Morell story "Quatre X Quatre") and Graton (in the Michel Vaillant adventures "Cairo" and "Paris-Dakar") sent rally-trim G-Class and M-Class, Unimog and Actros models on the rough road to victory over the pages of their comics.

Illustrations speaking louder than words

The list of Mercedes-Benz models used by comic-book illustrators is getting longer all the time. The heyday of Spirou and Fantasio and series like it may now be in the past but, thanks to the commitment of smaller publishing houses, comic fans can still look forward to new adventures in a similar mould. And this promises a further increase in not just the variety of vehicles in comic-book albums, but also the scope of artistic expression in the exciting, amusing and dramatic stories. It's certainly true that the depiction of a Mercedes-Benz model by one illustrator can differ considerably from the drawings of the same vehicle in a separate series.

Car fans like Graton (the Michel Vaillant series) and Seron ("Les Petits Hommes") have an ability to bring Mercedes sedans to life with a vigor and élan reminiscent of the work of legendary press illustrator Hans Liska. Other artists, however, alter the form of the vehicles they use as templates in order to make their pictures as dynamic as possible.

A third, albeit small group, decide not to incorporate actual vehicles into their work. These authors mostly make no attempt to replicate real-life automobiles, instead using illustrations of extremely simplified cars. That is certainly the case in "Fix & Foxi", as well as the majority of Disney adventures. German comic detective Nick Knatterton was one of those deprived of the pleasure of a Mercedes-Benz sedan or SL 300 roadster during his exploits (published between 1950 and 1959).

It's a shame when real-life automobiles come low down the priority list of illustrators, since automotive culture in all its variety is an important part of the development of the everyday features, infrastructure and popular aesthetic which make up the footprint of life in the 20th century. In comics, these are constantly compressed by color and brush, pen and ink into brief snapshots in time. The result is a constantly expanding graphic museum which illustrates the captivating and multi-facetted development of the automobile. And the entrance to this extraordinary exhibition lies between the covers of comic-books starring Donald Duck and friends.

2007 Cadillac Escalade: A Reborn Icon Arrives In Europe
GENEVA –The Cadillac Escalade is regarded as an inspirational nameplate in the American automotive industry. The original Escalade marked the start of Cadillac’s product renaissance in the USA and attracts the youngest American customers in the Cadillac portfolio of automobiles. The new model marks a continuation of that renaissance.

Based on General Motors’ all-new full-size SUV architecture, the second-generation Escalade features new power-train, chassis, safety and interior systems. These are led by a new 6.2L all-aluminum V-8 engine with variable valve timing technology, delivering 301 kW (403 hp SAE)* and 565 Nm of torque.

Sleeker, cleaner styling The new Escalade has all-new sheet metal with sleeker, cleaner styling and improved aerodynamics, yet it remains instantly identifiable. Larger, standard 18-inch wheels and optional chrome 18 -inch wheels are tailored to fit the wheel openings, creating a precise wheel-to-body relationship which gives Escalade a lowered stance.

Escalade also incorporates styling cues from the Cadillac Sixteen concept vehicle, including layers of chrome accents and a signature egg-crate grille flanked by halogen headlamps. Rear-end styling is equally distinctive, highlighted by chrome accents and LED tail lamps.

“The new Escalade represents the next phase of Cadillac’s product renaissance – a renaissance that was launched by the previous-generation Escalade,” said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager. “Since its inception, Escalade has been an icon – the vehicle customers aspire to own. The new model raises the bar with exceptional exterior style, interior refinement, increased performance and enhanced ride and handling smoothness.”

Distinctive design The new Escalade has a lower stance; sleeker, cleaner and more athletic in form with improved aerodynamics. The sleeker windshield angle of 57 degrees, flows gracefully into the roofline and improves aerodynamic performance to a 0.363 coefficient of drag, helping improve fuel economy and reduce wind noise.

All the major body components are new, and feature crisp, taut lines. Details in elements such as wraparound fascias, styled mirrors and integrated running boards enhance Escalade’s flowing design and bolster an increased feeling of refinement.

The new Escalade remains instantly identifiable and incorporates styling cues from the landmark Sixteen concept vehicle, including a more detailed egg-crate grille with detailed chrome elements and a prominent wreath-and-crest insignia.

Larger seven-spoke aluminum wheels, with standard 18-inch and available chrome finish 18-inch wheels, are tailored to fit the wheel openings. This precise wheel-to-body relationship gives Escalade a more athletic presence and lowered stance. The sides of the vehicle look fresh and clean with new doors, a single-piece window surround and seven layers of chrome accents. Rear-end styling also is distinct and is highlighted by LED tail lamps, LED-lit center high-mount stop light (CHMSL), chrome accents and an integrated trailer hitch cover.

Refined, spacious interior All-new interior styling is a cornerstone of the new Escalade, with premium materials and a distinct layout not shared with any other GM full-size SUV. The cabin also is more spacious, with an instrument panel that is lower and moved forward in the vehicle. This warm and inviting interior comes in two colors: Ebony and Cashmere.

Escalade’s instrumentation features gauges with white needles and blue light inlays with continuously lit, white-LED backlighting. They are complemented by the use of new, softer and low-gloss materials for the instrument panel and other trim pieces. Flush-mounted controls and radios, with almost imperceptible gaps, convey precision and integration.

The harmonious color and grain of the materials were carefully selected to provide a premium feel as well as durability for the nuance leather-covered seats, leather-covered door trim and center console, and fabric-covered interior pillars.

Attention to detail Attention to detail is evident throughout the vehicle. There is no visible hardware to greet occupants when the doors are opened and no exposed fasteners or hardware on the pillars, seats or seat tracks. The seats have “close-outs” that surround the seat bottoms and seat tracks, creating a more finished appearance. Fasteners and hardware are also covered when the seats are folded.

Greater fore/aft front seat travel provides 1049 mm of legroom for front-seat passengers. Second-row seat legroom and knee room, and third-row seat headroom are also increased over the previous model. The second- and third-row seats also have more shoulder room – a feat accomplished while also offering standard roof-mounted head curtain side airbags.

Nissan Fulfils Commitment to Egypt to Build Local Nissan Sunny
Cairo -: Less than a year since Nissan Motor Egypt announced its new era in the Egyptian market, the Japanese company proved it is fulfilling its commitment by offering today the first batch of Nissan Sunny 1600CC to the Egyptian market in three different categories – EX Saloon manual & automatic transmission and Super Saloon automatic transmission.

In April of last year, Nissan Motor Egypt had announced its plans to assemble the first sedan in its plant in 6th of October Industrial City.

The Japanese giant had registered its new era in Egypt last year through the Pick Up, which is considered the first vehicle to be produced and sold under the management of Nissan in Egypt, which also follows the plan of making Egypt a production base to the Middle East and North Africa.

"We have announced last year our plans for assembling the Nissan Sunny in Egypt, and today we are glad to announce that we have fulfilled our commitment to the Egyptian market by offering the 2006 model year Sunny, produced locally in two categories ‘Super Saloon' and ‘EX Saloon' models" commented Yasuaki Hashimoto, Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Nissan in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

"We hope that the locally produced Sunny is another new era for Nissan Motor Egypt to help assuring its position in the local market and helps us offer more great models from Nissan to the Egyptian customers" added Hashimoto.

Hashimoto also assured that this big step helps Nissan's performance globally under the new three-year plan, titled "Nissan Value-Up". Nissan hopes its sales will grow through this plan to reach an additional 4.2 million units, in addition to maintaining the highest profit margin between global automakers and to maintain the return on investment capital estimated at 20%.

Mitsuji Sato, Managing Director of Nissan Motor Egypt, assured that offering the locally produced Sunny represents one of Nissan new era stages in Egypt, where the company committed itself to offer more high quality Nissan products through the current year.

Further, Moustafa Hussein, Marketing and Sales Manager at Nissan Motor Egypt, assured the public that Nissan Motor Egypt is currently heading an effort to extend its local distributors network of local sales companies through its ambitious plan to offer the best sales and after sales services that the consumer expects from a brand like Nissan, which has proved its presence the world over.

Nissan had announced on 28 June 2004 that it will be handling the direct management of its operations in Egypt by investing U.S$60 million to purchase, renovate and expand its plant, in addition to reviving the sales, marketing and distribution activities in Egypt.

Throughout the first year, Nissan Motor Egypt was able to achieve lots of its ambitions by investing in its plant located in 6th of October Industrial City to reach a total production capacity of 17,000 units annually. Also, the number of employees has increased from 245 since the beginning of operations in April, up to 350 workers currently, which ensures Nissan Motor Egypt's effectiveness in developing automotive production activities in Egypt.

GENEVA — Koenigsegg, the Swedish ultra-exotic manufacturer, peeled the covers off its latest crowd-pleaser, the CCX, and said the car would carry a bargain-basement starting price of only $540,000 — not including options, delivery charges and VAT.

Joining the CC8S and the CCR, the curvy new CCX sports a body and chassis constructed of carbon-fiber composite reinforced with Kevlar and aluminum honeycomb. GENEVA — Rolls-Royce has introduced the experimental 101EX, which the company says is intended "to explore a potential design direction for a future coupé model."

In fact, a two-door companion to the Phantom sedan is tentatively slated for production at the company's Goodwood factory in England in early 2009, about a year after the Phantom-based Rolls convertible commences production. The cockpit is finished in machined aluminum and leather, and trimmed in rosewood and red oak veneers. The concept features a so-called "starlight headliner" with hundreds of fiber-optic cables giving the impression of "a star-filled night sky," the company said.

USAC Benevolent Foundation Karting Enduro
Team Stewart, sponsored by USAC Triple Crown and two-time NASCAR Nextel Cup Champion Tony Stewart, posted the closest victory in the 10-year history of the USAC Benevolent Foundation Go-Kart Enduro fund-raiser Saturday in Indianapolis.

The team, captained by USAC National Midget Champion Josh Wise and Indianapolis 500 veteran Johnny Parsons, finished just 10 seconds ahead of Team Querry, sponsored by Greg Querry and captained by Brian Gerster and Dane Carter in the three-hour event at the "Fun at Fastimes" two-level indoor karting facility.

The event is held annually to generate funds for USAC's Benevolent Foundation, which has provided needed financial relief for many needy USAC racers and their families.

USAC National Sprint Car Champion Levi Jones, former USAC champion Jay Drake, "4-Crown Nationals" Midget Champ Danny Stratton, plus Adam Barth, John Sayne, Darrell Lyons, Brad Wise and Jack Stephenson comprised the balance of the winning Stewart team, which received a "Backyard Bar-B-Que" for 12 as part of their prize package.

The second-place team, in addition to Gerster and Carter, contained Jimmy Parsons, Mike Prescott and Joe Janowski. The team captained by Sprint Car teammates Mat Neely and Justin Marvel, sponsored by Brothers Neeld Sales Corporation, with Craig Striegel at the wheel, led the first 54 laps until pit stops became a factor.

Several teams managed to lead through pit stops for driver changes. Strategy played into the race as several teams had more drivers than others, as was the case with the top two finishers. Stewart's team consisted of ten while Querry's had six.

Last year's winning combination, with J.T. Stapp as the lone captain, captured third place, completing 362 laps, three behind the top finishers, who ran 365 laps each. Stapp was joined by Kris Deckard, Tim Creech, Rex Norris III, D.J. Vogler, Nicole Alderson and Michael Testa. This team also turned in the fastest lap of the event at 22.256 seconds on lap 322.

Querry's team took over the lead approximately one hour and twenty minutes into the race and managed to build a three-lap lead.Stewart's team whittled away until lap 354 when they took the lead and held it to the checkered flag.

Stephanie Mockler, a co-captain with Billy Puterbaugh and a USAC regular in midget competition, suffered a sore wrist and ankle when another kart ended up in her cockpit after a tangle.

Members of the top three finishing teams received medals and a Smokey Bones Barbeque "Spirit Award" went to the second-place team, who exhibited the spirit to lead most of the event.

USAC drivers who also competed included 2005 USAC Champions Tate Martz and Jamie Williams, plus Mario Marietta, Cole Carter, Ted Hines, Kent Christian, Jordan Noblitt, Brad Loyet, Matt Westfall, Ryan Pace, Billy Wease and Dickie Gaines.

All competitors received team pictures and door prizes donated by Hoosier Tire, Weld Racing, Mechanix Wear, Trucothane Hammers and Valvoline. The real winners of this event and the Annual Women's Golf Tournament for the Foundation, are those who receive grants from the USAC Benevolent Foundation.

In other words: The focus of the smart forfour BRABUS is on the running gear and engine performance, which are impressive to say the least. Air conditioning and an audio system with an MP3 interface are also part of the package. The "edition red" is available as a coupé or a cabrio and costs € 20,500 and € 23,200 respectively.

smart roadster: Tomorrow's classic as a "collector's edition"

The smart roadster is going out with a bang! On show at the Geneva Motor Show is the first car of a final limited "collector's edition" for collectors and enthusiasts.

It is based on the smart roadster BRABUS Xclusive and features a silver tridion safety cell combined with exclusive matt brown bodypanels. The interior is no less exclusive with seats, instrument panel and interior door trim covered in high quality brown leather.

With engine power of 74 kW (101 bhp), a front and rear spoiler, a lowered sports suspension and large 17 inch alloy wheels the "collector's edition" guarantees lots of driving fun!

One thing is certain: The smart roadster and roadster-coupé will find their rightful place in automobile history - and in some enthusiasts' collections. The "collector's edition" offers the final - and perhaps most attractive - opportunity for fans to claim their bit of history.

GM Shifts Global Electronics Purchasing to China
DETROIT — General Motors reportedly has relocated its global electronics purchasing unit to Shanghai as the U.S.-based auto giant moves to source more components from China and the Asia-Pacific region.

GM previously had based the electronics purchasing unit in Warren, Michigan, where its other purchasing groups will remain, according to a story in Automotive News, the industry weekly.

China remains the largest and most profitable growth market for GM, in terms of vehicle sales. Much of the electronic components that it purchases in China are destined for GM products that are assembled in China, Korea and other Asian markets, the story said.

GM built 1.6 million vehicles in Asia in 2005, an increase of more than 20 percent from the previous year, according to Automotive News, which predicted the company's Asian plants will be outproducing its European factories before 2010.

Electronic components purchased from China and other Asian locations also will be shipped to GM plants around the world in increasing numbers.

High industrial growth for third straight year
New Delhi: Indian industry is projected to grow by nine percent during the current fiscal ending March 31, says the Economic Survey for 2005-06 tabled in parliament Monday.

According to the survey, the growth rate in terms of the Index of Industrial Production was 7.8 percent during April to December 2005-06 against 8.6 percent in the corresponding period of 2004-05.

The growth rate in the capital goods sector in April-December 2005 was 15.7 percent - a substantial improvement over the 13.8 percent recorded during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Consumer goods, both durables and non-durables, recorded an improved performance in the last two years, the survey said.

The growth rate of basic goods remained at six percent to match the corresponding period of 2004-05. However, intermediate goods witnessed growth of 2.2 percent compared to 6.9 percent during April-December 2004-05.

Within manufacturing, seven sectors grew at over 10 percent on an average during April-December 2005 as compared to only four in the corresponding period of 2004.

Food products, wool, silk and manmade fibres, wood and wood products, leather and fur products and metal products recorded negative growth in April-December 2005 with food products and wood and wood products showing signs of revival in recent months, the survey said.

Significant improvement was observed in beverages and tobacco, cotton textiles, textile products, basic metal and alloy industries, non-metallic mineral products, transport equipment and other manufacturing industries.

However, there was a perceptible slowdown in the machinery and equipment sector other than transport equipment, basic chemical and chemical products except petroleum and coal products, paper and paper products, metal products, wool, silk and manmade fibre textiles.

According to the survey, the automobile industry continued to expand with buoyant growth in all segments. Indian vehicles, particularly passenger cars and three-wheelers are making significant inroads into overseas markets, with exports from such categories accounting for 18-19 percent of current output levels.

The output of passenger cars is expected to cross the one million mark.

The production of cotton textiles increased by 10.2 percent against 8.2 percent during April-December 2004-05.

Cement grew 10.9 percent in April-December 2005, up from 6.9 in the corresponding period of 2004.

Steel production rose 7.1 percent in April-December 2005 - slightly lower than the 7.5 percent recorded during the corresponding period of 2004.

The survey observes that buoyant business expectations have successfully lifted the investment tempo in the industrial sector.

It notes that several steps were taken during the current fiscal in the area of foreign direct investment (FDI) as part of government's policy of transparency and liberalisation.

FDI inflows increased by 25 percent in 2004 and by 33.8 percent in 2005, while India's share in global FDI increased from 0.5 percent in 2002 to 0.8 percent in 2004.

The cumulative amount of FDI approvals accorded till November 2005 was Rs.2.5 trillion.

The survey anticipates that the recent softening of oil prices in the international market could impact positively effect on the industrial sector if interest rates do not harden.
