British Motor Show in trouble, could get moved
The British International Motor Show appears to be in trouble. The biennial show, which has seen its fair share of big debuts and publicity in its past two outings, might skip 2010 and instead next appear on the calendar in 2011. The show's profitability, a lack of manufacturer participation, and a possible conflict with the 2012 London Olympics are to blame. The organization that runs the show is known as The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), and they've admitted that skipping a year and shifting the normally biennial show to 2011 is a possibility. The SMMT's committee will meet in March to discuss the matter and come up with some strategies to attract more of the major automakers.

Last year's no-shows included Audi, BMW, Rolls-Royce and Volkswagen. Audi, for one, found it more effective to market themselves at the Goodwood Festival of Speed instead. We have to admit that we were grateful for that decision, as the Auto Union Type D, Le Mans-winning R10, and Sport Quattro S1 among others were amazing. Things might be getting even worse for 2010. Autocar is reporting that several manufacturers have already pulled out of the 2010 show, and that several others are considering similar action. While we hate to see any show cancelled, even the largest auto shows are hurting in this economy. Perhaps taking an extra year to regroup isn't such a bad idea.

GM to make new Buick in Germany?
GM might make a swap in its European production plans, shifting Buick assembly to Opel and Saab assembly to Sweden. Names of the models in question haven't been mentioned, but the Opel Insignia, Chinese-spec Buick Regal and coming Saab 9-5 are all built on GM's Epsilon II platform.

The original plan was to produce the Saab 9-5 in Sweden, and Saab has been studying the Trollhatten factory's viability for the task. Factory representatives at the Russelsheim plant have also been lobbying for more cars to produce, thinking the operation underutilized, and they would certainly be building more Buicks than Saabs. And if other rumors are correct, it would keep siblings that GM plans to bring closer together - Opel and Buick - under the same roof.

The swap, which would mean not building any new Saabs in Germany, would also send 9-3 production to Sweden. Sending 9-5 production there as well could also be seen as another step in extricating Saab from GM's web to assist in efforts to find a buyer for the brand.

80% of Vehicles Need Service & Parts, Reports Car Care Council
BETHESDA, Md., Results of vehicle check-up events at community car care events across the country in April and October 2008 revealed that 80 percent of vehicles need service or parts, the Car Care Council reported today. The unsatisfactory condition of vehicles also reinforces the continued need for consumer education about the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair.

An analysis of vehicle inspection forms, submitted from event coordinators in several states, shows that 80 percent of the vehicles checked during National Car Care Month in April and Fall Car Care Month in October needed parts replacement, service or fluids. For example, nearly one out of every 10 vehicles had the check engine light on. The top problem areas were motor oil, windshield wipers, air filters, belts and hoses and lights.

"Vehicle check-up events are typically the focus of community car care events sponsored by repair shops, parts stores or distributors in cooperation with local vocational schools, media, civic groups and others," said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. "While these events are free to consumers and serve as community-relations builders, most aftermarket businesses who participate experience an increase in sales and customers as a result."

When checking lubricants and fluids, the three top failure rates were: low, overfull or dirty motor oil at 32 percent; inadequate washer fluid levels at 23 percent, and low, leaky or dirty coolant at 23 percent; Transmission, brake, power steering and clutch fluids were also checked and had failure rates of 17 percent and below.

Approximately 15 percent of vehicles had front windshield wiper failures and 10 percent needed service to rear wipers.

At least one belt was reported as unsatisfactory in 18 percent of the vehicles inspected, and 7 percent required at least one new hose. New air filters were needed in 18 percent of the vehicles, while 7 percent needed new PVC filters. The check engine light was on in 9 percent of the vehicles.

Battery cables, clamps and terminals needed maintenance in 10 percent of the vehicles inspected, while 9 percent of the batteries were not properly held down. Eleven percent had either a green, dark or clear/yellow charge indicator light.

Improperly inflated tires were found on 15 percent of the cars and 12 percent had worn tread and were in need of replacement.

Bosch Group: Difficult year expected in 2009
STUTTGART, Germany – The Bosch Group expects 2009 to be one of its most difficult years in living memory. This is due to the strained situation of the global economy, which is placing an especially heavy burden on the automotive industry. "From today's perspective, we cannot yet say what fiscal 2010 will be like," said Franz Fehrenbach, chairman of the Bosch board of management. More clarity in this respect was not expected until the second half of 2009, he said. Nonetheless, the company intends to get by without making any drastic cuts in personnel.

"It is our objective to retain our core workforce if at all possible during this difficult phase," Fehrenbach said. Especially in Germany, he added, the company was confident that it could achieve this, thanks to the many flexible worktime tools available. It would, however, be more difficult in countries that do not have programs such as worktime accounts, shorter working hours, or shorter working weeks. "Here, unfortunately, we cannot rule out personnel adjustments," Fehrenbach said. Worldwide, the Bosch Group employed 282,000 associates as of January 1, 2009, compared with 271,000 in the previous year. In Germany, the number of Bosch associates increased by a strong 2,000 to 114,000. Of this number, roughly 1,500 joined Bosch as a result of first-time consolidations.

No cutbacks in investments in the future "We have to manage the difficult balancing act between savings and important investments in the future," Fehrenbach said. Thus, while all cost items were undergoing a critical review, at the same time all forward-looking projects and innovation efforts would be continued. Projects such as the expansion of the engineering center in Abstatt and the acquisition of land for the research center in Malmsheim (both in Germany) will be continued as planned.

The Bosch Group will not make any cutbacks in occupational training. "This year, we shall again be running these programs at full capacity," Fehrenbach said. Worldwide, the company provides occupational training to more than 6,000 young people, 4,400 of them in Germany alone.

Fiscal 2008 below expectations

The significant turn for the worse in global economic developments also affected the development of the Bosch Group in fiscal 2008. Despite the sharp appreciation of the euro, sales and earnings developed as expected in the first half of the year, and were generally satisfactory. After adjusting for currency effects, sales increased by roughly five percent. However, the second half of the year, and especially the fourth quarter, brought a downturn, which for some sectors was severe. According to the preliminary figures now available, the sales of the Bosch Group came to roughly 45 billion euros in nominal terms, or 2.8 percent less than in the previous year. At constant exchange rates, sales were 0.6 percent below their prior-year level.

The greatest losses were recorded in Automotive Technology, which was seven percent down year on year. By contrast, the Industrial Technology business sector was able to grow by 13 percent, thanks to a high backlog of orders. "In recent months, however, order intake has fallen considerably in this sector, too," Fehrenbach said. In the Consumer Goods and Building Technology business sector, sales grew by 2.5 percent after adjusting for currency effects. In nominal terms, sales were roughly on a par with the previous year.

In regional terms, the Bosch Group sustained its worst setback in North America, where sales fell by 15 percent. In Europe, sales were 2 percent down on the previous year. In Asia, too, sales have declined in recent months, with the result that growth was much slower in the year as a whole, at just 2.3 percent. However, exchange-rate effects play a great role in both Asia Pacific and North America. In local currency terms, sales grew in Asia by seven percent, while the decline in North America was roughly ten percent. These unsatisfactory business developments are also reflected in the development of result. At an expected 2.5 percent of sales, profit before tax in 2008 was significantly lower than the eight percent return achieved in the previous year.

Strategically well positioned

Despite these extremely difficult conditions, Fehrenbach also had positive news: "With our focused diversification, continued internationalization, and orientation to the "Invented for life" slogan, we are convinced that the strategy we are pursuing is the right one." As part of this policy of purposeful further development, a series of important partnerships and acquisitions were concluded in 2008. Most importantly, Bosch entered a new area of business with a promising future – photovoltaics – when it acquired ersol Solar Energy AG in Erfurt, Germany. Bosch Rexroth was able to round off its product range in mobile hydraulics by purchasing the Swedish company Hägglunds Drives. All the company's business sectors were strengthened by various other acquisitions. Altogether, Bosch spent some 3.4 billion euros on acquisitions and shareholding increases in 2008, significantly more than in the previous year. In addition, new partnerships secure the company a leading position in areas of future importance. For example, a joint venture to develop lithium-ion batteries was set up with Samsung. This will ensure Bosch a preeminent role in the future market of electric mobility. A joint venture with Mahle is intended to serve the growing demand for turbochargers as a way of increasing the efficiency of internal-combustion engines.

Great innovative strength

In the past year, Bosch was able to further consolidate its position as a driver of innovation, registering 3,850 patents, which exceeded the record set in 2007 by a further 18 percent. Research and development spending was increased by roughly eight percent to 3.9 billion euros. With sales falling concurrently, this meant that the overall R&D ratio in the Bosch Group rose to roughly nine percent, or as much as twelve percent in Automotive Technology. Bosch thus continues to lead the field in R&D in the automotive industry. As a result of these efforts, innovative product developments played a major role in sales developments in every business sector. In Automotive Technology, these developments included gasoline direct injection and the start-stop system. In Industrial Technology, gearboxes for wind turbines were especially in demand, while the products in demand in Thermotechnology included condensing technology and systems for the utilization of renewable energies. In the area of consumer goods, the products gaining greater market share included cordless power tools and garden tools, as well as energy-saving household appliances. Further impressive proof of Bosch's high level of innovative competence was provided when the company was once again singled out for the Federal German President's Innovation and Advanced Technology Award, which was presented to a team of Bosch researchers for new key processes in micromechanics.

Expanding global presence

The internationalization of the Bosch Group was also continued in 2008. New markets were opened up and existing ones extended. The regional subsidiaries in Japan and India became wholly owned, and were completely integrated into the Bosch Group. In Vietnam and Indonesia, Bosch established new regional companies in order to benefit from growth in the ASEAN countries. In Vietnam, a first plant is already under construction, and is scheduled to open this year. In future, it will manufacture belts for continuously variable transmissions in passenger cars. New research and technology centers were set up in Singapore and St. Petersburg in order to strengthen the company's global research network. In the Inner Mongolia region of the People's Republic of China, a new winter test center for automotive technology went into operation at the end of November 2008. This will allow customers in the Asian market to be provided with even stronger on-site support. Today, Bosch operates in roughly 150 countries through its regional companies and subsidiaries, as well as sales branches.

Bosch remains on course

The steps taken in 2008 have further reinforced the company's strategic position. At the same time, fundamental megatrends such as the ever closer networking of the global economy, the catching-up process in the emerging markets, and the growing demand for new technologies that protect the environment and conserve resources, continue to set the agenda for its business activities. With its entrepreneurial independence, high innovative potential, and broad international presence, the Bosch Group is therefore well prepared for the post-recovery phase. "Even in these difficult times, we shall further expand our competitive position," Fehrenbach said.

Toyota Announces Safety Recall on Select Vehicles
TORRANCE, Calif., Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. will launch a Safety Recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) involving approximately 134,900 Yaris vehicles sold in the United States.

The Yaris is equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners that retract the seat belts to begin absorbing the occupant's forward momentum when a severe frontal impact is detected. On 2006 through 2007 model year Yaris, Toyota has determined that the seat belt pretensioner deployment may affect the sound insulating foam in the center pillar, following a collision.

There are no reported cases of this condition in the United States and no other Toyota or Lexus vehicles are involved.

Toyota will inform owners of the involved vehicles with a Safety Recall notification via first-class mail beginning in early February. Owners are requested to contact their local Toyota dealer for repair. The repair will take approximately one hour, depending on the dealer's workload.

Maryland Senator's Tax Incentive Bill Boost for Struggling Auto Industry, Economy
WASHINGTON, -- The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) announced its strong support for legislation proposed by U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., to stimulate the struggling economy by boosting retail automobile sales.

Sen. Mikulski's proposal, S. 333, The Auto Ownership Tax Assistance Act, grants a tax deduction for consumers who purchase a new car or truck. New vehicle owners would be able to temporarily deduct sales and excise taxes as well as interest on auto loans from their income taxes. Earlier in the month, Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., introduced a companion measure in the House, H.R. 159.

"With auto sales constituting almost 20 percent of the nation's retail economy, a boost in new vehicle sales would create a wave of economic activity, which would be felt through every level of the economy, from dealers on Main Street to the factory floor," David Regan, NADA's VP of Legislative Affairs said. "House and Senate leadership and President Obama need to seriously consider how Senator Mikulski's' bill enhances the economic stimulus legislation under consideration in Congress."

Regan recognized that flagging consumer confidence, not a lack of credit availability for new car buyers, is still depressing new vehicle sales.

The national economy, Regan noted, is not the only beneficiary of a spike in new car and truck sales because "a car sold today generates immediate sales tax revenues for many cash-strapped state and local governments."

"The extraordinary economic challenges facing the country coupled with the fact that the federal government is now propping up two major domestic automakers, policymakers must realize that Senator Mikulski's bill is good for the auto industry and the nation's economic outlook," Regan added.

NADA, founded in 1917 and based in McLean, Va., represents about 20,000 new-car and truck dealers, with nearly 43,000 separate franchises, domestic and import.

Frost & Sullivan to Host Free Briefing on the Passenger Electric Vehicle Market
MOUNTAIN VIEW, -- The Automotive & Transportation practice at Frost & Sullivan is pleased to announce its 2009 Quarterly Analyst Briefing Presentation on the electric vehicle market to be held on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. PST.

The global economic downturn, volatile fuel prices and the rising levels of green house emissions have created dynamics that favor hybrid and electric vehicles. The automotive industry is accelerating plans to roll out hybrid and electric vehicles as a result of President Obama's interest in jump-starting the U.S. economy by investing in government infrastructure and strategically positioning green technologies. Electric vehicles have the ability to create opportunities for utilities, suppliers and financial businesses, as efforts are made to create one-stop shops for vehicles and energy. EVs are predicted to emerge as mainstream personal mobility solutions in the near future.

However, development of a battery charging and swapping infrastructure along with high battery costs could impede the initial adoption of electric vehicles. This presentation will discuss innovative business models and key infrastructure development trends that address the challenges of electric vehicle adoption. Highlights of the briefing include: market measurements, business models, charging infrastructure, business strategies and opportunities.

"Companies have been chalking out innovative business models and related businesses are developing electric charging stations in many countries," states Frost & Sullivan Consultant Benny Daniel. "As a result of leasing trials conducted, OEMs see battery leasing as a potentially effective options to bring down the cost of EV ownership. "

To participate in this discussion, please email Stephanie Ochoa - Corporate Communications at stephanie.ochoa@frost.com with the following information: your full name, title, company name, telephone number, email address, city, state, and country. Upon receipt of the above information, a registration link will be emailed to you. You may also register to receive a recorded version of the briefing at anytime by submitting the aforementioned contact details.

Question mark hangs over abandoned Nano land in Singur
KOLKATA: More than three months after global auto major Tata Motors decided to shift out of West Bengal the project to build the world's cheapest car, a question mark still hangs over the fate of the farmland acquired for the factory.

"The plot is still bound by walls and there are security guards all over. Farmers have not got back their land as yet," farmer leader Becharam Manna told IANS.

In 2006, the West Bengal government acquired 997.11 acres at Singur in Hooghly district for Tata Motors to construct a factory to roll out its Rs.100,000 ($2,500) Nano car. But strident protests against the acquisition by a section of farmers forced the company to relocate the plant to Sanand, near Ahmedabad, in Gujarat.

Manna's forum to "save" farmland at Singur was at the forefront of the movement - spearheaded by the opposition Trinamool Congress party - and represents farmers whose land was allegedly forcibly acquired by the state government.

The Trinamool-led protesters demanded return of 400 acres, which they claimed had been forcibly acquired. But Tata Motors argued that the Nano project was an integrated facility, where the mother plant and the ancillary units had to be together and that it was not possible to relocate the 56 ancillary units elsewhere.

"The 400 acres are still lying with them (Tata Motors)," Manna said.

Added Manik Das, one of those unwilling to part with his landholding: "My two-acre plot was acquired for the factory. They have not returned it to us yet. We are still continuing our agitation and asking them to give us back our land."

Das cultivated potato and paddy on his plot.

Asked when the company planned to return the land to the West Bengal Industrial Development Corp (WBIDC), a Tata Motors spokesperson said: "We cannot indicate a specific date. Our equipment is still lying over there. We are in discussion with WBIDC."

WBIDC is the premier agency of the state's commerce and industries department to promote industrial development, attract investment and facilitate infrastructure growth in West Bengal.

WBIDC leased out the land in Singur to the auto major.

"The land is still with Tata Motors. There is no indication (from the company) on vacating the land right now. They are paying lease rent regularly to us," WBIDC managing director Subrata Gupta told IANS.

Gupta said the company will take some time to remove its equipment from the plant. "They told us they will require about 10 months."

Ancillary units too are yet to remove their equipment. "We are with Tata Motors, wherever they go, we have to follow them. We have not removed our equipment from the Singur plant yet," a source in one unit said.

"Tata Motors will give us some amount (as compensation). We are rebuilding everything at Sanand," he added.

When the auto major announced last October that it had decided to pull out of Singur, it had already invested Rs.15 billion (Rs.1,500 crore), with ancillary units having sunk in Rs.5 billion (Rs.500 crore).

Incidentally, the Congress party has decided to jump in on the Nano bandwagon, demanding that measures be taken to set up industrial units at Singur for the sake of those farmers who willingly gave their land to the government for the Tata factory.

Earlier this month, party workers demonstrated in front of the factory gates, saying if no industrial unit can be set up at Singur, the state government should return the land to the farmers.

Honda mothballs thousands of cars
Honda has created a giant car park at Southampton docks, as the recession-hit company mothballs thousands of unsold cars.

The manufacturer has been forced to rent extra space to park up to 8000 cars that have nowhere to go as car sales plummet.

Honda has rented 20 acres of storage at Southampton docks, but has provision to store a further 7000 Civics and CR-Vs at a nearby former RAF airfield.

A sharp decline in sales has forced the company to halt production during February and March at its nearby plant in South Marston, Wiltshire.

Honda experienced a drop in sales during 2008 of almost 21%.

These are areas that Lotus has been working on for many years and I am pleased to say that Lotus is now acknowledged as a world leader in the relevant and significant areas of alternative fuels, electric and hybrid technology and of course staying true to the Lotus brand value of creating light weight and efficient vehicles.”

Commenting on Group Lotus business, Mike Kimberley said, “It will be a very tough year for the global automotive industry, but Lotus is reasonably placed compared to some other car companies. We have an ambitious research and development programme and we are very encouraged by the invitation given by Lord Mandelson to Regional Development Agencies to bring forward programmes for research and development into cleaner engines and lighter cars, areas in which Lotus is one of the world leaders.

“We have restructured and prepared our three key areas of business, the manufacture and sale of Lotus cars, world class high technology automotive engineering consultancy and contract manufacturing for third parties, to assist in riding this economic down-turn and to continue as world leaders in advanced automotive technology and low carbon cars of the future.”

Audi And Hamburger SV On The Ball Together
INGOLSTADT/HAMBURG, Audi has added a prominent member to its list of successful partnerships in national and international soccer. Effective immediately, the manufacturer from Ingolstadt is the official vehicle partner of the Hamburger Sport -Verein (HSV). In addition, the brand will support the “The Hamburg Way,” a social initiative of the soccer club that plays in Germany’s First Bundesliga (first federal league).

Audi and the Hamburger Sport-Verein have agreed on an extensive cooperation package for the next three years. Among others, Coach Martin Jol, Head of Sport Dietmar Beiersdorfer, Chairman of the Board Bernd Hoffmann as well as other coaches and officials are now driving vehicles from the sporty model range of the Ingolstadt brand. In return, Audi presents itself with vehicles and other activities at the Hamburg HSH Nordbank Arena.

With an average of over 55,000 spectators per home game, the club – currently ranking in fourth place – achieves top turnouts among federal league clubs. “There is hardly another German metropolis where the passion shared by the club and its fans is more tangible. And passion is also a theme closely linked to our vehicles,” says Dietmar K. Elsasser, Head of Distribution and Sales, Region North of AUDI AG. “Hamburg is one of the biggest single automobile markets in Germany, and thus one of the most important domestic markets for us as a manufacturer.”

Katja Kraus, board member of the Hamburger SV: “By winning Audi as a new partner, we managed to secure a partnership with an automobile brand of high international prestige, which stands for absolute quality. We are particularly pleased to see Audi joining us in the ‘Hamburg Way’ initiative as well.”

By concurrently supporting the “Hamburg Way,” Audi, as a partner, assumes social responsibility in Hamburg as well. The novel initiative of the HSV under the patronage of First Mayor Ole von Beust combines classic sports sponsoring with social commitment. The “Hamburg Way” is a long-term alliance of members from sports, politics and business, which promotes selected projects. “We highly value the HSV’s social commitment and are pleased about the opportunity to immediately start supporting the activities of the initiative,” says Dietmar K. Elsasser.

The cooperation will be launched as early as next week when the federal league’s return round kicks off with a home game between the HSV and FC Bayern. As well as the international top-caliber clubs Real Madrid, FC Barcelona or AC Milan the Munich club is a member of AUDI AG’s large and successful soccer family.

New Ford Fiesta Econetic Is UK's Greenest Family Car
BRENTWOOD, United Kingdom –: The Ford Fiesta ECOnetic has arrived in dealership showrooms with a growing order bank in place for what is the UK's greenest family car, according to independent analysts.

The all-new Ford Fiesta – December's top-selling car – is the latest to benefit from the ECOnetic package of extra fuel efficiency refinements already available on Focus and Mondeo.

For the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic, modifications include lowered suspension, aerodynamic body styling and a gear change alert. Together these help to lower fuel consumption to 76.3mpg and CO2 emissions to 98g/km.

Since the all-new Ford Fiesta went on sale in October, interest in the range's most frugal variant has soared, with over 500 Fiesta ECOnetics already ordered by customers.

The ECOnetic's subtle but effective efficiency refinements achieve unrivalled fuel economy and emissions. Debuting on Fiesta ECOnetic is a 'smart' gear change indicator in the instrument panel which senses the way the vehicle is being driven – taking account of road gradient, vehicle load and individual driving style – to signal the optimum change point.

Automotive environmental specialists, Cleangreencars.co.uk, confirmed that the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic is the UK's greenest family car. Publisher Jay Nagley said: "Cleangreencars.co.uk welcomes any car that sets a new benchmark for the industry. That the Fiesta ECOnetic does so without any loss of driving pleasure makes the new model doubly welcome. Of the 3,600 production models ranked by CO2 on Cleangreencars.co.uk, the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic comes out top among five-seater cars."

The arrival of Ford Fiesta ECOnetic continues a series of low CO2 model launches initiated by the blue oval in 2008. Since the launch of Focus ECOnetic last January, the Mondeo ECOnetic went on sale in July and a Ka ECOnetic has been announced for 2009. Ford has a total of 51 models emitting under 120g/km CO2.

Nigel Sharp, Ford of Britain managing director, said: "Ford leads the UK auto market on a variety of fronts and it won't come as a big surprise that we're doing so environmentally too. The increasing number of our customers shifting into greener cars translates into meaningful reductions in automotive CO2 output."

All-New Ford Ka Comes with Low Cost of Ownership
BRENTWOOD –: Ford's new Ka is now on sale with lower insurance groups across the range, which, together with significantly improved residual values, offers customers minimised cost of ownership.

The insurance rating on new Ka starts at 1E – the lowest rating available – for the Studio model. All others are rated 2E (on the 20 group system) including the new diesel option available on Zetec series. These low ratings reflect the range of safety features available on the new model, including a very stiff body structure with reinforced steel door beams and Ford's Intelligent Protection System which integrates airbags, seat belts and seating technologies to promote a highly effective occupant safety system. New Ka's security features also contribute to the insurance rating and include shielded door and ignition locks.

In addition, data provider CAP has set the all-new Ka residual values (RVs) with an average rise of 14 per cent over three years / 60,000 miles. This equates to an increase of £1,350 for petrol derivatives. All petrol models are now valued at 39 per cent after three years / 60,000 miles with the diesel Zetec valued at 41 per cent.

Furthermore, after one year / 10,000 miles the average rise in RV is 16 per cent. RVs are up by between 15 per cent for Zetec 1.2 petrol and 21 per cent for Studio petrol. This amounts to increases of £1,625 and £1,850. The new diesel option on Ka Zetec has a residual value set at 69 per cent.

Martin Ward of CAP said: "The new Ford Ka is a brilliant small car which is coming to the market at the right time when customers are looking for economical cars that are cheap to run, fun and have great styling – it's a superb drive for such a small car."

DENSO Develops Remote Touch Controller
Kariya, DENSO Corporation today announced that it has developed a remote touch controller that is mounted in the vehicle's center-console and allows drivers to remotely control cabin equipment such as the car navigation system, audio system, and air conditioning system. This is the world's first such controller for vehicles with a two-dimensional cursor on the display screen. The new controller is installed on the Lexus RX, which Toyota Motor Corporation released in Japan earlier this month.

"Much like a computer mouse, the new controller has a pointing device that moves the cursor on the display screen to select buttons, icons, and other interface elements," said Mitsuhiko Masegi, managing officer responsible for DENSO's Information & Safety Systems Business Group. "This user-friendly human machine interface will allow drivers to easily and accurately operate cabin equipment remotely, helping to ease driver workload."

Another feature which will help drivers easily adapt to the new controller is that through the use of two electric motors, the controller also will simulate a "clicking" feeling as if the cursor is drawn toward the target button when moving the cursor closer to the graphical symbol on the display.

Fifth Gear Hits the Snow in a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4
SANT'AGATA BOLOGNESE, Italy — Resorting to the ever popular "supercar in the snow" theme, the U.K. TV program Fifth Gear recently headed out to the Italian Alps to see what a powerful lime green Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 could do in cold conditions.

Tiff Needell tested the Italian beast with traction control turned on and off, pronouncing the latter much more fun to drive than when ESP is activated. Needell also explained how the traction control limits the throttle and "makes the car near to crashproof as you can get."

The Gallardo LP560-4 is equipped with a direct-injection 5.2-liter V10 with 552 horsepower, and, as seen in the video, permanent four-wheel drive. The Lamborghini's top speed is 202 mph, and it can jet to 60 mph in less than 3.7 seconds.

Auto suppliers get organized, ask Treasury Dept. for $10 billion in loans
Auto suppliers are in a perilous position, which isn't surprising considering that their livelihoods are directly tied to those of the major automakers, and we all know how that's been going lately. To help keep their ships afloat, a team of 35 execs from the largest suppliers has crafted a plan asking for $10 billion in loans from the government. Nowadays, assembling an automobile is like a giant jigsaw puzzle, and bits come from all around the globe from thousands of possible suppliers. As it currently stands, these parts suppliers are paid on a 45-day cycle, but that's not going to be good enough to keep many of them from bankruptcy as auto sales in December were horrid nearly across the board, and January sales aren't going to be any better.

Instead of receiving the money directly from the Feds themselves, auto suppliers are asking that the funds be dispersed to the automakers, who would then in turn pay the suppliers on a 10-day cycle for parts delivered. The only problem with this plan, though, is that Chrysler and General Motors still need to submit business plans to Congress on February 17th that detail their path to viability – or else they'll need to give their lifeline back, which would likely send both the automakers and many of their suppliers spiraling towards bankruptcy.

Ford Turns to Family Member Elena to Lead Global Marketing
DEARBORN, Michigan — In a surprising move, the Ford Motor Co. has turned to a family member to beef up its global marketing, starting with the 2010 launch of the Ford Focus. Elena Ford, 42, the great-great granddaughter of auto pioneer Henry Ford, was tapped for the new position of director of Ford's global marketing, sales and service operations.

The Tuesday announcement may signal that the Ford family is once again assuming a more high-profile role in the day-to-day operations of the automaker. Until now, William Clay Ford, Jr., Ford's great-grandson, has been widely regarded as the face of the company. He is the executive chairman of the board of directors of Ford. He had served as president, CEO and Chief Operating Officer until turning those roles over to Boeing executive Alan Mulally in 2006.

Elena Ford is currently executive vice president of Ford Motor Credit's global brand and marketing. She starts her new job on February 1.

In a statement, Ford said the promotion "reflects an aggressive move to global vehicles."

"All Ford vehicles competing in global segments will be common in North America, Europe and Asia within the next five years," Ford said.

Elena Ford is the daughter of Charlotte Ford and the late Stavros Niarchos, a shipping executive. She is the granddaughter of the late Anne Ford Johnson and Henry Ford II.

Tech Watch: Nissan To Test New Warning System for Drivers
TOKYO — Nissan announced it will soon begin testing an innovative system that uses cellular phones and other technology to help warn drivers when they are heading in the wrong direction on a freeway. The Japanese automaker anticipates that the warning system may be available on production vehicles in the coming years.

Tests of the system will be done in conjunction with West Nippon Expressway Co., which operates freeways in western Japan.

"The joint project will take advantage of the widespread use and multifunctionality of today's cellular phones," said the two companies in a joint statement. "The system will use the global positioning system and a detailed map database to warn drivers about a number of potentially dangerous situations and conditions — including driving the wrong way on expressway ramps, which frequently causes serious accidents."

Nissan said the system will give the driver audio and visual warnings when the car is going the wrong way on a ramp near a service area or interchange. Text warnings will appear on the car's navigation display if it detects that the car is about to head the wrong way.

Nissan said it intends to reduce by half the number of fatalities or serious injuries in crashes involving its vehicles between 1995 and 2015.

2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid Qualifies Buyers For Highest Available Federal Tax Credit - $3,400
DEARBORN, Mich., Customers eager to purchase America's most fuel-efficient mid-size sedans, the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and Mercury Milan Hybrid, can take advantage of a $3,400 tax credit from the federal government.

Buyers of a new 2010 Fusion Hybrid or Mercury Milan Hybrid this year will qualify for the $3,400 tax credit, the highest credit amount ever offered for hybrids purchased or placed in service after December 31, 2005. The Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrid, the most fuel-efficient SUVs in America, continue to qualify for a $3,000 tax credit, the highest available tax credit of all hybrids on the road today.

Fusion Hybrid's class-leading 41 mpg rating in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, which tops the Toyota Camry Hybrid by 8 mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the highway, helped Fusion garner the significant credit amount, which is based on a vehicle's potential fuel efficiency. Stacked together, Fusion's fuel savings and tax incentive can help significantly offset the premium to the customer for hybrid-electric technology over a conventional gasoline- powered vehicle.

"Hybrids are an important part of our strategy to deliver the best or among the best fuel economy with all of our new products, and the Fusion and Milan Hybrids have set the pace for the company, as well as our competitors," said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. "We're glad to see our government help promote these advanced, clean fuel-efficient vehicles to the consumer."

Technological innovation, like the development of Ford's hybrid systems, is a core value as the company drives for leadership in quality, safety, fuel efficiency and in-car connectivity. A new study this week by The Patent Board(TM) -- the world's leading patent analyst -- found that Ford outperformed all other automakers in the quality and significance of its technology patents. The 2010 Fusion, Milan and their respective hybrid models set new standards for technology innovation with 119 U.S. patents.

Hybrid Hot Sheet

To deliver 700-plus miles on a single tank of gas, Fusion Hybrid travels up to 47 miles per hour in pure electric mode, faster than the Camry and all other hybrids currently on the road. In addition, the system's Intake Variable Cam Timing (i-VCT) allows the hybrid to more seamlessly transition from gas to electric mode and vice-versa, delivering a near imperceptible hybrid driving experience to the customer.

Other advanced hybrid systems that contribute to Fusion's fuel-economy leadership include:

-- A smaller, lighter nickel-metal hydride battery, which produces 20 percent more power than Ford's previous hybrid system.

-- An enhanced electronic throttle control, which reduces airflow on shutdowns, reducing fueling needs on restarts.

-- A regenerative brake system that recovers and stores nearly 94 percent of energy normally lost through friction in braking.

The 2010 Fusion Hybrid also debuts Ford's SmartGauge with EcoGuide, a unique instrument cluster that helps coach drivers on how to optimize the fuel efficiency of their vehicle.

Ford's Growing Hybrid Fleet

The 2010 Fusion and Milan Hybrids join the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids, doubling the company's hybrid product offerings and volume.

The 2009 Escape and Mariner Hybrid FWD models qualify for a $3,000 tax credit; 4WD models $1,950. Owners of previous model-year Escape and Mariner hybrid models may also qualify for varying credit amounts from $1,950 to $3,000. The credit is only available to the original purchaser of a new, qualifying vehicle.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., -- Hyundai Motor America announced today that it is extending its commitment to offering factory-installed digital HD Radio technology beyond the Genesis by launching the technology on additional vehicles in the 2011 model year. The HD Radio system allows drivers to receive digital transmissions from local radio stations with crystal-clear sound quality. HD Radio technology also allows radio stations to broadcast alternative programming on the same frequency, and this programming can be received with Hyundai's HD Radio receiver.

Today, HD Radio technology is factory-installed standard on Hyundai Genesis models equipped with navigation systems. For the 2010 model year, Hyundai will expand the availability of HD Radio on Genesis to select models without the navigation feature. HD Radio broadcasts offer listeners the quality, choice and interactivity that consumers have come to expect from digital technologies, including:

--HD2/HD3 multicast channels, which dramatically expand the amount and
diversity of radio content by allowing multiple channels of programming to be broadcast over a single FM frequency.
--Data services, such as text information (e.g., artist names and song titles).
--Static-free, crystal-clear reception on both AM and FM.
--No subscription fee.

HD Radio technology, along with a state-of-the-art Lexicon audio system, debuted with Hyundai in July 2008, when the all-new Genesis sedan reached dealerships across the country. Hyundai aims to shatter premium automobile paradigms with the introduction of this new flagship vehicle, which was named 2009 North American Car of the Year. With capabilities and features comparable to the world's leading premium sports sedans, Genesis is offered at a starting price of $33,000, offering first-class quality and style at a more affordable price point.

We Fixed It For Jim!
MILTON KEYNES, United Kingdom –: The latest celebrity to buy a Volkswagen campervan is none other than the British entertainment legend Sir Jimmy Savile. He bought his new Volkswagen California from the Volkswagen Van Centre (West Yorkshire) at Cleckheaton near Leeds, who fixed it for Jim to take delivery of his new pride and joy just before Christmas.

‘I’ve had two other Volkswagen campers over the years, but this California is the all-singing, all-dancing dream vehicle for me,’ said Sir Jimmy Savile. ‘I’m a wanderer, and always have been, so I love motorhomes and especially sleeping in them. Sometimes I get home, check my post, shower and still sleep in the campervan outside!’ he continued.

The Volkswagen California is the latest in a long line of campervans based on the Volkswagen Transporter. The latest model is unique as it’s now produced by Volkswagen to ensure the highest quality and is sold with a full three-year warranty.

The beauty of the California’s versatile design is that it’s a real go-anywhere multi-activity vehicle. It can just as easily be used for daily transport to work or shopping trips, or as a living space for hobbies, days out or touring holidays.

It quickly converts to a real home from home complete with an electric pop-up roof, two double beds, fridge, cooker and sink, with an outdoor table and chairs neatly tucked away in the side door and tailgate. Both front seats swivel to create a sociable indoor lounge area with an adjustable free-standing table; plus there are fresh onboard water and waste tanks and an AC converter to enable the brief use of 230V electrical equipment, when it’s not possible to connect to an external 230V electrical hook-up.

Sir Jimmy chose the top-of-the-range California with a five-cylinder, 2.5-litre TDI PD, 174 PS turbodiesel engine, complete with Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, and an optional bike rack on the tailgate.

Never one to sit still for long, Sir Jimmy has already taken his first trip in the California to the Lake District.

Toyota Announces Safety Recall on Select Vehicles
TORRANCE, Calif., -- Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. will launch a Safety Recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) involving approximately 134,900 Yaris vehicles sold in the United States.

80% of Vehicles Need Service & Parts, Reports Car Care Council
BETHESDA, Md., -- Results of vehicle check-up events at community car care events across the country in April and October 2008 revealed that 80 percent of vehicles need service or parts, the Car Care Council reported today.

The Autocar Tyre Test - Chinese quality lags behind
AUTO CENTRAL –: Tyres are a distress purchase for many car owners, so when the time comes to replace them it’s no surprise that many motorists shop on price. But Autocar’s latest tyre test reveals that fitting budget Far Eastern tyres can seriously affect the way a car copes in wet weather.

Imported tyres from China and Taiwan currently account for one-fifth of all tyres sold in the UK, and although these pass the minimum ECE R30 high-speed test, there are no statutory tests for braking, handling or aquaplaning performance, and even the R30 test is considered inadequate by many car makers.

Autocar tested five leading budget brands – the GT Radial, Linglong, Nankang, Triangle and Wanli – against an established premium tyre from Continental. The magazine conducted its own tests for wet handling and braking, dry handling and braking and aquaplaning, plus a more stringent high-speed test.

Autocar senior tester Jamie Corstorphine said, “We expected the bargain tyres in this test to fall short of the Continental, but we were not prepared for just how poorly some performed.”

With on average 200 days of rain each year, a wet handling and braking test is vital for learning about the capabilities of a tyre. Braking from 50mph, the Continental stopped in the shortest distance, followed by the Nankang, GT Radial, Wanli, and Triangle, with the Linglongs taking the longest to stop. Shod with the Linglongs, the VW Golf Autocar used for its tests was still doing 27.8mph at the point where it had stopped on the Continentals.

Overall the Continentals easily won, scoring top marks in all but one test. A consistent performance earned the GT Radials second place, but a wet lap time 3.4sec adrift of the Continentals indicated just how far even it falls short.

“Having seen how the five cut-price tyres in this test perform, we’re in no doubt that quality pays dividends,” said Corstorphine.

BMW M1 Hommage Set To Be A Show Stopper
MULGRAVE, Australia –: BMW's stunning M1 Hommage will be the centrepiece of the BMW stand at the 75th annual Melbourne Motor Show, which opens on 27 February at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

The M1 Hommage show car will be the star of a dazzling two-stand display, alongside the all-new BMW 7 series sedan which makes its Australian debut at Melbourne.

BMW is the biggest single exhibitor at this year's Show, which is the only Australian motor show for 2009.

Other stand highlights include the just released BMW X6 xDrive50i plus the new frugal and powerful BMW 330d.

The M1 Hommage was created to celebrate the 30th anniversary in 2008 of the BMW M1 road and race car program.

It is a design study in the tradition of BMW Turbo - precursor of the original M1 mid-engined supercar - that represents a contemporary take on the M1 concept.

The liquid orange paint work developed exclusively for the M1 Hommage evokes a classic BMW M1 colour, yet surprises with its powerful iridescent play of colour and brilliant depth.

The M1 Hommage lifts many of the unique styling cues for the original M1 such as the air vents in the bonnet, louvres on the rear section and the black cut line that divides the roofline from the rear section of the body.

Another feature carried over is the twin outboard BMW roundels, positioned at the extremity of each rear wing.

Melbourne International Motor Show runs from 27 February to 9 March at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, and is organised and promoted by the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce through its dealer division the Australian Automobile Dealers Association (Vic).

Auto industry gears up to meet Bharat Stage-IV norms
PUNE: As global automotive emission norms move to a fuel neutral status, where emissions are at the same low-level whatever the fuel, the debate over cleaner fuels appears to be over.

Regulations for emission levels are already the same for CNG and diesel under Euro-IV, a standard which the Bharat Stage-IV norms expect to meet. The BS-IV come into force next year, said Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) president Pawan Goenka.

“By April 2010, BS-IV norms will come into force which will bring down emission levels. We are about four to six years behind the US and European norms,” said Mr Goenka. Siam director general Dilip Chenoy added: “It is better to stay a year or so behind their norms since we can then learn from their experience.” He cited the example of after-treatment devices which became mandatory in Europe, after Euro II and III norms were enforced. “European manufacturers then had to fit after-treatment devices, which adds to the cost. Indians optimised the engine without adding such devisor affecting costs. Hence, it is better we stay behind European norms,” said Mr Chenoy.

Since 80% of the pollution in the country is caused by vehicles that are over eight-year-old, Siam as the industry body is working with the state governments to phase out buses based on their age and mileage, instead of phasing out all vehicles which are over 15-year-old, added Mr Chenoy.

Currently, there are three different studies for emission monitoring. The source apportionment study, undertaken by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and soon to be unveiled, has looked at the sources of pollution and at solutions to reduce it. The other study has been undertaken in Bangalore by TERI and Toyota to study the health effects of diesel, and the third is on nano particles and CNG. Siam is also supporting a project by Pune-based Emitec to retrofit buses with devices which can bring down emission.

Referring to devices which are retrofitted to reduce emission, Cummins India’s vice-president (automotive business) Arun Ramachandran said that such a device addresses just one or two of the four major pollutants. “A retrofitted device measures the emission of soot or particulate matter. Also, it requires regular maintenance which makes it expensive when it comes to public transport like buses, hence requires the government support in the form of subsidies,” said Mr Ramachandran.

Leading engine maker, Cummins India chief technical officer Craig Barnes said, they have already started manufacturing the 2.8-litre and 3.8-litre diesel engines in China, which will soon be available in India.

Mahindra not interested in Hummer, Volvo
SWITZERLAND: Vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd is not interested in buying either General Motors Corp's Hummer brand or Ford Motor Co's Swedish car brand Volvo, a top executive said on Tuesday.

"We don't want to acquire other problems," Vice Chairman Anand Mahindra told Reuters on the sidelines of the meeting of the World Economic Forum, but he did not rule out other buys.

"What we will look for is brands and distribution, if we can acquire them cheaply."

General Motors and Ford are trying to sell Hummer and Volvo to help them raise cash in the face of slumping sales.

Mahindra said Volvo was a great company with a great brand, but added it was not "affordable and digestible."

On Hummer, he said the brand had unfortunately come to stand for criticism of sports utility vehicles.

"We're against gas guzzling and non-environmentaly friendly. We want to position our vehicles as guilt-free SUVs," he said, adding that from next month all Mahindra's utility vehicles would have microhybrid technology as a default option, making them 5 percent to 7 percent more fuel efficient.

He noted that Mahindra, which plans to enter the U.S. market with its SUVs this year, hoped to profit from the fact that smaller, fuel-efficient SUVs were one part of the U.S. industry that was bucking the downturn.

Back home, he saw the Indian car market recovering in about three months, although commercial vehicles could take longer to turn around.

Mahindra said the slowdown in the Indian car industry in the last six to 12 months had been self-inflicted, rather than due to the global slowdown, because of higher interest rates that dampened consumer spending.

"There is tremendous latent demand in India," he said, adding there were lines outside dealerships for a low-price minivan Mahindra launched two weeks ago, with the first month's production already sold out.

The company is the Indian partner of Renault, with whom it makes the Logan low-cost car.

We drive the Lexus IS250
It looks like Lexus is getting into the spirit of the January sales. Thanks to a recent face-lift, the IS compact executive now provides more kit for less cash.

How much cash? Well, the 2.5-litre V6 petrol version we have here now starts at £22,715, where it used to check-in at £24,127. The range-topper now sets you back £28,240, but it used to cost £29,687.

More kit - less cash

The increased kit levels come courtesy of the re-jigged trim structure, which now begins with SE. It has alloys, climate control, suede-effect upholstery, cruise control, a six-disc CD stacker with MP3 socket, stability control and eight airbags as standard.

There’s plenty of space upfront, but anyone travelling in the back seats is less well catered for.

The boot is small and awkwardly shaped, too, with significant wheelarch intrusion.

The looks have changed slightly: there are reshaped bumpers, redesigned rear lights, new door mirrors and two new colours.

On the road

Despite small changes to the suspension, the Lexus still can’t give you the thrills that rivals can. You need to work the 204bhp 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine hard to make brisk progress, but it pulls cleanly from low revs. The IS turns into corners swiftly, grips keenly and is unfazed by mid-corner bumps, so it’s a shame that the steering doesn’t offer more feedback, while the hard ride means it’s nowhere near as comfortable as the equivalent BMW, the 325i.

The IS250 manages only 28.8mpg while the 325i returns 39.8mpg. The Lexus is catastrophically heavy on CO2, too, chucking out 231g/km to the BMW’s 170g/km – so the company car tax bandings are 22% for the BMW and 34% for the Lexus.

Mitsubishi Motors Announces Production, Sales and Export Figures for December 2008 and Calendar Year 2008
TOKYO, Japan -: Mitsubishi Motors Corporation today announced global production, as well as domestic sales and export figures for December 2008 and for the 2008 calendar year.

December 2008

Production: total and in Japan

Total global production came in at 72,916 units, a decline of 38.5 percent over December 2007 and the tenth consecutive monthly decrease since March. Production volume in Japan at 42,329 units was down 46.6 percent as a 49.4 percent decrease in passenger car and an 18.3 percent decline in commercial vehicle output saw year-on-year output fall for the second consecutive month. The fall in production volume in Japan was due mainly to the impact on sales volume in the company's world markets of the global financial crisis.

Sales in Japan

Vehicle sales in Japan in December totaled 11,143 units, a 31.3 percent decrease year-on-year and the 16th consecutive monthly decline since September 2007. Registered vehicle sales volume was 47.1 percent down on the same month last year, despite a 7.4 percent increase in sales of the Pajero. Minicar sales volume was 19.0 percent down despite a healthy 52 percent increase in sales of the Pajero Mini.

Production overseas

Overseas production volume totaled 30,587 units, 22.3 percent down over December last year and the tenth consecutive monthly decline. By region, output in North America at 3,256 units was 30.6 percent down as production levels were adjusted for slow sales in the United States. In Europe, output at 1,418 units was 70.7 percent down as production levels at NedCar were tailored to sluggish sales in the region.

Export shipments from Japan

Total exports from Japan of 27,681 units were 51.5 percent down on December 2007, marking the second consecutive month of year-on-year decreases. Exports to Asia at 2,026 units were 59.2 percent down on December 2007 due mainly to a drop in exports of built-up models to China. Exports to Europe at 5,115 units were 72.8 percent down due mainly to a major drop in sales in Russia and The Ukraine.

January - December 2008

Production: total and in Japan

In calendar year 2008 total global production fell 7.8 percent below the previous year, the first year-on-year drop in two years. Production volume in Japan in 2008 came in at 0.5 percent under that for the previous year, the first decrease in four years, as a 0.2 percent increase in passenger car output failed to cover a 6.1 percent fall in commercial vehicle output. While output in Japan was up year-on-year in the first few months of the calendar year, the impact of the global financial crisis on the world economy forced production levels down as sales volume in the company's markets started to drop in the autumn. As a result output for the full calendar year came in at virtually the same level as the previous year.

Sales in Japan

Vehicle sales on the Japanese market in calendar 2008 recorded the second consecutive year-on-year decrease. Total registered vehicle volume was 21.8 percent down, despite growth in Galant Fortis and Colt model sales. Minicar volume declined by 13.1 percent, despite higher sales of the Pajero Mini.

Production overseas

Overseas production for calendar 2008 fell 18.8 percent over the pervious year, the first decline since 2006. Output in North America and in Europe came in at 58,963 and 53,661 units, 25.1 percent and 19.5 percent down respectively over calendar 2007 totals as both regions were hit by falling sales.

Export shipments from Japan

Exports from Japan registered a 5.7 percent increase over the total for calendar 2007, registering the third consecutive year-on-year gain since calendar 2006 and marking a new record since the company spun off its truck and bus operations in 2003. Total export shipments to Asia grew by 3.1 percent to 41,587 units, principally on the back of higher sales of built-up models in China. Exports to North America fell 2.3 percent to 64,785 units despite a strong 35 percent increase in shipments to Canada. Shipments to Europe grew 19.6 percent to 264,791 units as strong sales in Russia and The Ukraine more than made up for slower sales elsewhere.

JLR welcomes UK auto package; 'small beer', says Opposition
LONDON: Tatas-owned Jaguar Land Rover has hailed the British government's 2.3-billion-pound 'support package' announced last evening, even as the ailing auto industry exuded mixed response, but an opposition leader described the step as a "small beer".

The newly-appointed Shadow Business Secretary Kenneth Clarke, a member of the opposition's shadow cabinet, said the package was a "small beer", although Labour MPs in carmaking constituencies voiced cautious support.

JLR Chief Executive David Smith said: "The government has recognised the strategic economic importance of the car industry in the UK as a major provider of high-skilled jobs and a significant contributor to our balance of trade."

The package though received general support from car manufacturers, left trade unions disappointed.

Trade union Unite's General Secretary Derek Simpson told the BBC he was pleased the government had made a start in helping the car industry but questioned if the loans would be enough.

"In the case of the car industry I suspect much more needs to be done," he said.

The package, unveiled by Business Secretary Peter Mandelson, would offer guarantees to unlock loans up to 1.3 billion pounds from the European Investment Bank for making investments in lower carbon initiatives.

Further, the car industry would be getting one billion pounds as government loans to fund investments in greener vehicles.

Aston Martin put on three-day week
Aston Martin has put its production line workers on a three-day week.

The move is Aston Martin's latest attempt to manage the downturn in car sales, after it announced in December that 600 workers would be made redundant.

Workers at the company's Gaydon factory will be put on a new shift pattern and will be working Mondays to Wednesdays.

Aston Martin says the move is temporary and workers will continue to be paid, with their hours being 'banked' and claimed back at a later date.

A spokesman for the car maker said: 'Like other premium car brands, Aston Martin has been forced to take action to respond to the unprecedented downturn in the global economy.

'Following detailed consultation with our trade union partners we have agreed further measures to help manage our way through this challenging period, while minimising the impact on our employees as much as possible.'

Britain unveils £2.3 billion loan for car industry news
The UK government announced its long awaited package to support the country's car industry with £2.3 billion loan guarantees to save 200,000 jobs employed directly by automakers and a further 640,000 indirectly, although it falls far short of the £13 billion asked by the Unite union.

Unveiling the auto package, business secretary Lord Mandelson said that car manufacturers will be able to tap up to £1.3 billion of loans from the European Investment Bank, which was offered to UK companies last year and a further £1 billion loan from the Treasury to fund the development of more eco-friendly cars.

He also announced that funds to support training of employees could be hiked up from £65million to £100million if there is demand from car-makers and Mervyn Davies, the new trade and investment minister, will come out with plans to help the financing arms of car manufacturers to get access to funds.

Speaking at the House of Lords, Mandelson said the aid-package to the car industry would halt the slump in car purchase that has put the jobs of thousands at risk and hoped that a "reinvention" of the British car industry would take place.

He added that the package was no 'blank cheque' nor a 'bail-out but a 'significant boost' to the industry, as the car industry was in 'in the frontline of the downturn' and sales had declined 'faster and further than any other sector since the summer' and ''It would be appalling if we would take the downturn, ride out the recession and let a key sector like this go to the wall.''

He however made it clear that the aid came with strings attached and the industry would have to come up with eco friendly vehicles to avail of the loan.

Tony Woodley, the joint general secretary of the Unite union, who has been asking for £13 billion in aid to the manufactures and allied industries, said that the package announced by Mandelson was "a massive disappointment."

Speaking to the press, he said, "Two billion pounds sounds like a lot of money but at least half of this will be taken up by Vauxhall and Jaguar Land Rover alone, leaving little or nothing for the hundreds of component companies. This is a fraction of the support being given by almost every other government in Europe."

Derek Simpson, joint general secretary of Unite said, "While we welcome any support for technological change in the future, this money from Europe is months away. There could be little left of the industry by the time it arrives. Britain needs those factories and skills there for when the economic revival comes-if they go, they are gone forever.''

"This package is too little. But it is not yet too late. Ministers must leave behind the failed free-market philosophy once and for all and intervene decisively now. The principle of government intervention to support strategically vital industries, such as the car industry, has now been established, and we will be pressing to ensure that we build on this from here on in," he added.

Addressing the House of Commons, shadow business secretary Kenneth Clarke said the package was the same as EU loans funded by the European Investment Bank, which had been announced last year.

He said the government had for months dithered in coming to the rescue of the auto industry as a result car sales collapsed and jobs were lost and also blabbed the Treasury for curtailing Lord Mandelson's attempts to broker a bigger bail-out.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which represents the car manufacturers, said the package was a welcome boost and David Smith, the chief executive of Jaguar Land Rover, welcomed the government's package.

Lord Mandelson is scheduled to meet car manufacturers and unions later to discuss the details of the £2.3 billion package.

Britain's car industry had rolled out 1.65 million cars last year, of which 76 per cent was exported.

The £2.3-billion loan guarantees to UK's car industry is meager compared to the $17 billion given to the US car companies General Motors and Chrysler, France has given Peugeot Citroen and Renault credit lines and carmakers may get €6 billion if they do not shut their manufacturing plants.

Germany has granted conditional aid to GM's Opel with €1.8 billion and offered €2,500 to anyone willing to trade in their old cars for new greener cars.

In Australia Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced a $6.2 billion lifeline for Australia's ailing car industry in November 2008, with a focus on fuel-efficient vehicles.

Canada gave $12-billion through credit facilities to finance vehicle sales and leases, as well as inventories for car dealers.

Russia raised tariffs on imported cars in January in an effort to protect its domestic car industry while China extended loans to Chery Automobile, one of the country's leading automakers, while the South Korean government announced in December that it would consider providing financial assistance to domestic automakers if they face financial problems.

Japan and India have not offered any help to the car industry.

FACTBOX-Aid packages for automobile industry
Italy's government meets with car industry representatives on Wednesday amid mounting calls for help to stop sales sliding, in a crisis that threatens the survival of Fiat SpA, the country's biggest manufacturer.

Following are details of auto industry aid packages announced so far:

* BRAZIL -- Brazil said in November it had instructed state-run bank Banco do Brasil to make available a total of 4 billion reals ($1.72 billion) so that automakers' financing units could increase lending and spur sales.

* BRITAIN -- Britain announced on Tuesday it would guarantee up to 2.3 billion pounds ($3.29 billion) of loans to the car industry. The government said it would guarantee up to 1.3 billion pounds of auto industry loans from the European Investment Bank and guarantee a further 1 billion pounds of loans to back investments that are not eligible for support from the European lender.

* CANADA -- Canada unveiled an aid package on Dec. 20 that provided C$4 billion ($3.28 billion) in emergency loans to the Canadian arms of General Motors (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Chrysler CBS.UL to keep them operating while they restructure. The automakers have a deadline of Feb. 20 to come up with a comprehensive plan that would allow them to get government aid.

* CHINA -- China unveiled measures on Jan. 14, which include cutting in half, to 5 percent, the sales tax on purchases of cars with engine sizes below 1.6 litres and one-off cash subsidies totalling 5 billion yuan ($731.1 million) to owners of high-emission vehicles who trade them in for cleaner ones.

* FRANCE -- Prime Minister Francois Fillon said on Jan. 20 France may pump up to 6 billion euros of aid into the industry, but warned that automakers would have to safeguard French jobs in return. Measures would be announced in the coming days, he said.

* GERMANY -- Germany unveiled a 1.5 billion euro aid package on Jan. 13. The package forms part of a 50 billion euro stimulus package of investments, tax relief and support for companies. The measures include incentives worth 2,500 euros for new car purchases.

* PORTUGAL: -- Portugal announced on Dec. 3 a 200 million euro credit line for auto and car parts exporters.

New Mazda 3 driven
Car stylists are without doubt the goalkeepers of the motoring world – because everyone notices if they get just one thing wrong.

We’ll let you decide for yourselves whether Mazda has scored an own goal with the mildly plumped-up looks of its new 3 small family car, but what's not in doubt are the improvements to the interior.

With a swish new look, featuring a rakish dashboard, classier-materials and bigger seats, comfort and quality has taken a decided up-turn.

Behind the wheel

Thankfully, the driving position remains spot-on, with the steering wheel and pedals perfectly aligned, while a slightly longer gearstick means the gearshift feels even more precise than before.

There's also been more thorough approach to refinement. Now, there's significantly less wind and road noise entering the cabin, which means Mazda has addressed the previous model’s biggest flaw.

Look even deeper, and the use of high-tensile steel, additional bracing and increased welding means the body structure is stiffer than before and yet it's also lighter.

Lighter and stiffer is the perfect recipe for enhanced precision, and it shows. The 3 steers accurately, corners with minimal roll and flows over dips and crests without ever threatening to upset your breakfast.

That's great for the driver, but things aren't quite so rosy for those travelling in the back. The centre rear seat is so narrow that even size zeros will struggle, plus legroom is on the tight side and the shallow windows mean things feel a little claustrophobic.

The boot isn't exactly huge but it'll easily carry a few bags of rubbish down to the recycling dump, while flicking down the 60/40 split rear seat backs will enable you to dispose of that clapped-out washing machine.

Engine line-up

There are some new engines in the range, including a 2.2-litre diesel engine that's available with 148bhp or a rip-snorting 182bhp.

It's smooth and free revving and even the lower-powered version delivers bags of power, so you can surf through the gears with minimal effort and make deceptively rapid progress.

A 2.0-litre petrol is available with a standard automatic gearbox, but, undoubtedly, the cheaper 1.6-litre cars will be the biggest sellers.

The most economical engine on offer is the 1.6-litre 89bhp diesel, which is capable of 62.7mpg on the combined cycle – and with a C02 output of just 119g/km, it slots into the 13% taxation band. We'd stick with the petrol, though, because the diesel is a bit on the noisy side.

The petrol 1.6 may lack the ultimate punch – you’ll often need to change down a gear or two and press the accelerator for all you’re worth to get past slower-moving traffic – but it revs eagerly and is more than man enough for the job.

Car makers positive over support package
Car manufacturers have given a cautious welcome to the Government's car industry support package announced by Lord Mandelson yesterday, following a meeting with the Business Secretary today.

However Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) chief executive Paul Everitt has underlined that the issue of providing credit to the finance arms of car manufacturers must be resolved within weeks if the car industry is to emerge undamaged from the recession.

'Following our meeting with Lord Mandelson today we hope to have our first meeting with trade and investment minister Mervyn Davies this week to try and resolve this in time for the March market,' said Everitt.

'We must act swiftly: the car industry is a competitive business. We need to secure and protect our position as a healthy UK industry so that, in three years' time we are still in good shape, and ready to lead on future technologies. We do not want the industry damaged in the long-term because we haven't acted now.'

The government is reported to be responsive to requests from car company's finance arms for credit, in the same way banks have been bailed out. However, the process is being delayed because financial regulations forbid anyone but banks accessing Bank of England funds.

SMMT president Joe Greenwell said: 'The good news to come out of today is that the government is trying to help. However, we are operating in real time so the process of providing aid has to be swift and productive.'

Other issues discussed with Mandelson included the possibility of introducing a scrapping scheme similar to those recently introduced in France and Germany, where new car buyers are offered subsidies of up to £2000 to scrap older, more polluting cars with new, more efficient ones.

Everitt concluded: 'We do feel more confident. Following today's meeting we have more clarity on how yesterday's announcements will work and the Government has shown a willingness to support our industry in the short term and protect its position of global competitiveness in the medium to long term.'

J.D. Power Examines Efficiency of Automakers' Web Sites
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. Despite significant declines throughout the industry, one automaker, in particular, has stood out above the rest when it comes to Web-site usefulness, according to Wave 1 of the 2009 Manufacturer Web Site Evaluation Study from J.D. Power and Associates.

Earning the highest Web-site satisfaction rating among all brands was Honda, with a score of 882 on a 1,000-point scale. Porsche was next at 867, followed by Mitsubishi (866), Kia (865) and Acura (862).

Basically, the semi-annual study measures how useful manufacturer's Web sites are during the new-vehicle shopping process. The sites are evaluated for appearance, speed, navigation and information/content.

Information for this wave of the study was gathered in November from more than 11,400 new-vehicle shoppers who planned to search for a new model within the next 24 months

"Honda resolved some minor navigation issues on their Web site, which helped them improve upon their fourth-place ranking in the previous wave," explained Scott Kane, senior manager of marketing/media research at J.D. Power.

"Currently, the Honda Web site performs well in all measures and demonstrates particular strength in speed, navigation and demonstrating options, features and specifications," he continued.

However, overall site usefulness for the industry has dipped nine points since June, as 16 OEMs had double-digit declines.

"Because of changes in the economic environment, many of today's new-vehicle shoppers are in a much different — and more challenging — financial position than were shoppers in years past, and many auto manufacturers have not prepared their Web sites accordingly," Kane pointed out.

"For new-vehicle shoppers, having the ability to go online to easily compare vehicles from various manufacturers, figure out monthly payments and find the best deal possible has always been important," he added. "However, in these tough financial times, these kinds of considerations have an even greater impact on the shopping process."

What's more, marketing budgets for OEMs have tightened up, as of late, meaning that many automakers' Web sites might not be able to meet all the expectations of consumers.

For instance, some automakers have simplified photograph and video offerings on their site or limited the variety of such media.

"Likely due to budget cuts, some sites that once had beautiful images in city and off-road settings from multiple angles showing off their vehicles' capabilities — things that resonated with consumers — have scaled back on the images offered," Kane noted.

"A hurdle that manufacturers are facing involves obtaining the high-quality content they need for their Web sites — such as images, video and animations — in a cost-effective way," he added.

"Finding synergies within their organizations as they create content for various marketing needs — both online and offline — will be critical in continuing to meet new-vehicle shoppers' needs," Kane continued.

Perhaps not too surprisingly, the study suggested that the more the useful an automaker's Web site is, the better chance it has to drive traffic to its dealerships.

"While it may be tempting for manufacturers to scale back development and maintenance of their Web sites, improved Web site design can translate into a higher volume of sales and a positive return on investment," Kane explained.

"Now, more than ever, it is essential for manufacturers to be strategic about their marketing efforts to capture their share of the diminishing number of new-vehicle shoppers," pointed out.

J.D. Power Unveils New Assessment Tool

In other news, J.D. Power introduced a new program to help automakers evaluate the success of new-model launches.

Basically, the Vehicle Launch Index offers OEMs metrics to help them assess how new vehicles performed in their launch years. Each vehicle is measured against benchmarks in the overall industry and its individual segment.

According to officials, the index includes all model introductions in the U.S. since 2007 and also monitors all current and future launches.

"With the introduction of the Vehicle Launch Index, manufacturers are now able to gauge the marketplace success of their newly launched vehicles through an external, independent source," commented Gary Dilts, senior vice president of global automotive at J.D. Power. "The Vehicle Launch Index provides a real-time, comprehensive view into marketplace activity, allowing manufacturers to quickly respond to ever-changing industry conditions."

The company indicated that the index considers such factors as turn rate, credit quality, residual factor, dealer gross profit, vehicle price and incentive spend, all of which can be critical to successful launches.

"In 2009, manufacturers are making multibillion-dollar investments in more than 50 major product launches in the U.S. alone," said Dilts. "Current market conditions demand a need for a third-party, syndicated assessment to ensure manufacturers maximize the return on their investment."

ExxonMobil Chemical Develops Exxtral Performance Polyolefin to Meet VW Bumper Fasciae Specifications
HOUSTON : An ExxonMobil Chemical Exxtral performance polyolefin has been specified for the front and rear bumper fasciae of the new globally available VW Golf VI. Exxtral BMU130 polyolefin was developed specifically to meet the performance targets set by Volkswagen (VW). VW is the first German original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to select strong, light-weight Exxtral polyolefins for fasciae.

“The specification criteria set by VW are some of the most challenging in the industry. Using our technology and application expertise to develop a specific grade for these bumper fasciae ensured we could meet VW’s functional and cost needs, which was crucial in earning their business," said Marty E. Levine, global automotive marketing manager, ExxonMobil Chemical specialty compounds business.

The new TPO is characterized by a unique impact strength at low temperatures that provides the essential balance between stiffness and toughness required for bumper applications.

Exxtral BMU130 performance polyolefin is designed for tight tolerances and excellent dimensional stability. Its low coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE) allows parts to be designed with narrow gap dimensions for an aesthetic and stylish appearance.

This grade also meets part shrinkage requirements specified by VW and provides good surface appearance due to its fluidity. The product has a broad operating window, which helps to eliminate processing problems, such as “tiger stripes.” A ready-to-inject, fully-stabilized, colored compound, Exxtral BMU130 polyolefin can improve productivity and deliver cost savings as it requires no mixing or blending at the molding presses. Available in black or grey, it also offers good paintability and has high UV resistance.

The portfolio of Exxtral performance polyolefins is becoming increasingly popular with automotive designers and processors looking for new materials that offer opportunities to reduce weight and cost without sacrificing performance. Durable in adverse conditions, they provide outstanding surface hardness, good “fit and finish” characteristics, fast cycle times and are competitively priced.

Porsche Officially Proclaims its New Museum Open
STUTTGART, Germany, and ATLANTA,-- At a special ceremonial event in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, Porsche today officially declared the opening of its new Museum -- one of the most significant and historic building projects in the long and storied history of the company.

This special dedication comes just days before the museum will be open to the public for the first time this Saturday, January 31st. Porsche expects more than 200,000 visitors to the Museum each year.

On hand to mark the official ceremonial opening of this spectacular new building was Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, Chairman of the Board of Porsche AG, who welcomed State Parliament President Peter Straub, the Prime Minister of Baden-Wurttemberg Gunther Oettinger, Interior Minister Heribert Rech, the Lord Mayor of Stuttgart Dr. Wolfgang Schuster, and members of the Porsche and Piech families as well as an additional 200 invited guests.

"This is our new business card on the Porscheplatz," announced Dr. Wiedeking. "We will not only use the museum as an exhibition, but also as a communication platform - as a permanent, integral part of the ongoing dialogue which Porsche conducts with the public."

Porsche's new modern building occupies nearly 5,600 square meters of exhibition space, providing room for approximately 80 historic vehicles and more than 200 exhibits from the company's history. Spacious conference areas are available for events, including access to an impressive roof terrace. The exclusive restaurant "Christophorus" integrated into the exhibition, adds to the assortment of haute cuisine in Stuttgart. Furthermore, the museum bundles the entire historical spectrum of the sportscar manufacturer in one location with its Historical Archive. On display for all visitors to see, expert technicians will work in a transparent museum workshop, ensuring that the exhibition vehicles, and the historic vehicles of customers, are kept in impeccable condition.

During his remarks at the ceremony, Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG, emphasized the task of the sportscar manufacturer to always remember the founding personalities of the company and to keep the spirit of their work alive: "My grandfather and my father were passionate automobile pioneers, engineers, and entrepreneurs. Their life's work and everything that their successors successfully made of this and further developed from it, is documented here," said Porsche.

Representing the region's governing bodies, both Prime Minister Oettinger and Lord Mayor Dr. Schuster spoke about the indelible historical significance of the Porsche Museum and its ramifications far beyond the boundaries of Stuttgart.

"The history of Baden-Wurttemberg as the cradle of automotive engineering is closely entwined with the biography of the designer Ferdinand Porsche," commented Oettinger. "All of the things which had their origin in his fountain of creativity, and which were continued by his son Ferry, are shown in this unique collection of sportscars which can be displayed to the public in its full extent for the first time. This exhibition is a reflection of the Swabian art of engineering that has given the region a worldwide reputation."

"This is a big hit for Zuffenhausen," said Dr. Schuster after touring the museum. "The state capital has gained, in the form of the new Porsche Museum, an additional, magical magnet for automobile fans from all over the world. At the same time the region can also add another attractive address for a wide variety of events. In this way Stuttgart becomes a metropolis of the automobile - and one that everyone can enjoy."

2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid Qualifies Buyers For Highest Available Federal Tax Credit -...
DEARBORN, Mich., -- Customers eager to purchase America's most fuel-efficient mid-size sedans, the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and Mercury Milan Hybrid, can take advantage of a $3,400 tax credit from the federal government.

Web Development Company Pioneers ATV Safety E-Learning System
PORTLAND, Ore., -- The praise is streaming in from an on-line survey of site users for the All-terrain Vehicle Safety Education site, produced by A-VIBE Web Development in conjunction with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. After being featured on several news broadcasts and media publications, A-VIBE is pleased to announce the world-wide launch of rideatvoregon.org.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department sought out A-VIBE's team of developers for their depth of knowledge in the field of programming, particularly their expertise in ColdFusion development. The custom e-learning system combines interactive user participation and database-driven results.

Users can create either individual accounts or an account for their entire family, and the content is supported by a quiz function that promotes success in learning the information. Upon completion of the online course with a passing score, the user's information is automatically sent to the card printers, and a printable, temporary completion card is generated on the spot.

Prompted by a surge in all-terrain vehicle riders and an alarming number of injuries and deaths, the mission of the site is to create a user-friendly and dynamic way of learning the course's curriculum, which is geared towards a diverse population of riders. Since its launch on December 30, 2008, the e-learning program has been accessed by more than 16,500 riders.

In compliance with new state-wide laws, all riders under the age of 15 and their supervisors using Class I (quads) or III (off-road motorcycles) on Oregon's public lands are required to carry proof of the course's completion as of January 1, 2009.

A-VIBE welcomes your feedback and would be happy to answer any questions regarding the ATV Safety Education site project, or any other web related inquiries you may have.

2009 Geneva Auto Show: Bentley Biofuel Car Scheduled For Production in 2009
DETROIT — Inside Line has confirmed with Bentley that its biofuel "Extreme Bentley," which makes its debut on March 3 at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show is bound for production later this year and will be priced higher than the 602-horsepower Bentley Continental GT Speed.

"Last year (at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show) we laid out our strategy for biofuel cars by 2012," said David Reuter, Bentley's U.S. spokesman on Wednesday. "We said our first biofuel car will be on the road by 2009. This is that product."

While unable to give exact pricing or the name of the vehicle at this point, Reuter said the biofuel Bentley will be more expensive than the Bentley Continental GT Speed. "If you look at the Continental GT Speed, it is priced around $203,000," he said. "This (biofuel) car will be more powerful and have a premium price over the GT Speed."

Bentley in a statement on Tuesday said its first biofuel offering will be its "fastest, most powerful production car ever." It said the vehicle is "delivering stage one of Bentley's environmental commitment and pioneering the use of this fuel in the luxury sector."

Reuter would not disclose global volume targets for the biofuel Bentley. But he hastened to add that this is not merely a demonstration vehicle. "This is a production model that will be available in worldwide distribution," he said.

The "Extreme Bentley" makes good on what Bentley has been promising for months. Earlier this month, at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, Bentley issued a report called "Bentley and Biofuels" that said it intends to offer "a full range of bioethanol compatible vehicles before 2012." It said it is making "a significant investment to enable our entire fleet to operate on biofuel" and to be equipped with flexfuel powertrains.

Coming in 2011: Mini Crossover
VILLACH, Austria — The Mini lineup will grow by one with the addition of the Crossover, Mini's largest family member yet. The production model will be similar to the concept that was successfully received at the 2008 Paris Auto Show, a company spokesman tells Inside Line.

"After going over the large amount of feedback from experts and the public, we approved the Crossover for production just four weeks after it debuted at the Paris show," says head of Mini brand management Wolfgang Armbrecht.

Armbrecht and Mini Development Chief Friedrich Nitschke spoke with IL at a recent event in Austria to shed light on plans for the Crossover.

The big Mini, Armbrecht, said, "had to be a true 4x4, carry four adult passengers, and be four meters long [157.5 inches] maximum." At the same time, he stressed, the Crossover had to retain the brand's beloved "go-kart drive quality, be immediately recognizable as the Mini SUV, and possess unlimited clever flexibility on the interior."

Along with cost-related changes to the showcar's fancy rear end, the front's appearance will be improved for the production model. Mini exterior design boss Marcus Syring says the production design will be revealed at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show in September, promising: "It will look very much like a Mini SUV needs to look."

Armbrecht said the Crossover will launch first as a front-wheel-drive urban mini SUV; an optional BMW-Xdrive-derived four-wheel-drive system will go on sale later. Both are set to be built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria.

The Crossover in Cooper trim with front-wheel drive will start just above the base price for a Cooper S convertible: around $29,000. A Cooper S four-wheel-drive Crossover should be priced at or above $34,000. Since style and functionality are more the point than sportiness, there will be no John Cooper Works edition of the Crossover.

Mini says the 1.6-liter engine could be twin-turbocharged at some point for a future top version beyond the Cooper S. Europe will get diesel engines capable of up to 45 mpg but, as usual, North America won't. All markets will receive the four-wheel-drive version with a serious lower range of crawling gears.

Mini assured IL that the options list for the Crossover will be even more extensive than the company's already full menu of add-ons.

Allison Transmission Breaks Ground on New Chennai Operations Facility
CHENNAI, India, Allison Transmission, Inc., the world's leading supplier of commercial duty fully automatic transmissions and hybrid propulsion systems, broke ground today on a new India facility designed to meet the growing global demand for Allison automatic transmissions.

Once construction of the more than 203,000-square-foot manufacturing plant is completed, which is expected to occur in early 2010, it will also serve as the Allison Transmission India Pvt. Ltd. regional headquarters with executive, marketing, and sales offices. In addition, the facilities are designed for warehousing and customization.

"We believe it is important to strengthen our local presence in India to support our growing in-country operations," said Allison Transmission, Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Lawrence E. Dewey. "I am extremely proud of the milestone this groundbreaking represents, and thankful to the Tamil Nadu government for its enthusiastic support."

India is an important market for Allison Transmission as it is the world's fourth largest economy, and is the fifth largest commercial vehicle manufacturer in the world. Allison's investment in India comes at a time when global demand for the company's fully automatic transmissions continues to increase.

"We conducted an extensive and lengthy search before we settled on an area in which to build our India facility," said Ram Amarnath, Managing Director of Allison Transmission India Pvt. Ltd. "And we found the right mix of location and a talented, world class employment pool in Chennai."

Key local management staff in the areas of operations, purchasing, human resources and sales personnel are already in place. Other employees will join the team later this year. Allison's association with India goes back more than 40 years when it began serving the country's mining and oil field industries. In 2007, Allison established permanent offices in India, operating under the name of Allison Transmission India Pvt. Ltd. to realize growth opportunities in the on-highway market. In recent years, Allison Transmission's growth in India has been propelled by fitting automatics into low-floor CNG and diesel buses in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Nagpur and other Indian cities. There are now nearly 1,000 on-highway trucks and buses operating in India, which are fitted with Allison Transmissions. Major OEM customers include Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, JCBL and Lexia Motors. Study Says Ford Technology Innovation Most Important
DEARBORN,– A new study by the world’s leading patent analyst, The Patent Board™, found that Ford Motor Company outperformed all other automakers in the quality and significance of its technology patents.

“Ford’s patented technologies are closer to the cutting edge than its competitors,” says Christine Wren, director of business development for The Patent Board, which tracks and analyzes patents across 17 industries globally.

Technological innovation is a core value at Ford as the company drives for leadership in quality, safety, fuel efficiency and in-car connectivity. For example, the 2010 Ford Fusion and Fusion Hybrid, which is America’s most fuel efficient mid-size sedan, have 119 patents, a record for Ford.

The Patent Board recently issued its Top 10 Innovators in Automotive & Transportation Patent Scorecard™ for the fourth quarter of 2008, which ranks Ford above all other automakers in Research Intensity™ and Industry Impact™. Ford’s Research Intensity score, which is more than twice that of the industry average, indicates the extent to which its portfolio includes patents with strong scientific support.

Similarly, The Patent Board’s Industry Impact score measures the broader significance and impact of a company’s patent portfolio across the industry. This indicator analyzes how other patents build on Ford’s innovation by looking at patent-to-patent citations.

“Ford’s overall patent portfolio plays a significant role in serving as a foundation for other technology innovation as shown by receiving 20 percent more citations than the average portfolio in this industry,” Wren says.

For the Fusion Hybrid, for example, teams of research scientists and engineers developed Ford-exclusive technologies that helped the vehicle achieve a certified 41 mpg in the city, 8 mpg better than the Toyota Camry hybrid.

“Ford is using technology to remake our lineup with the green, high-tech vehicles customers want,” says Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “The Fusion Hybrid team set the bar high – to develop America’s most fuel efficient mid-size sedan – and that’s what they delivered.”

Patents on the Fusion Hybrid pertain to technologies such as Ford’s new-generation hybrid powertrain and SmartGaugeTM with EcoGuide digital instrument cluster that helps coach drivers to achieve better fuel efficiency.

“We focus on getting high-quality patents that have the best breakthrough potential for the company,” says Bill Coughlin, president and CEO of Ford Global Technologies.

Specific Fusion and Fusion Hybrid patents include:

Hybrid technology – The Fusion Hybrid’s powertrain system combines the best attributes of the gasoline engine and electric battery-driven motors to deliver the optimal experience for the customer in terms of driving performance and fuel economy. The overall system upgrade allows the hybrid to operate up to 47 mph in pure electric mode, approximately twice as fast as some competitors. The city driving range on a single tank of gas is expected to be more than 700 miles.

SmartGauge™ with EcoGuide – This unique instrument cluster helps coach Fusion Hybrid drivers on how to optimize performance of their vehicle for maximum fuel efficiency. It features two, high-resolution, full-color liquid crystal display (LCD) screens on either side of the analog speedometer that can be configured to show different levels of information, including fuel and battery power levels, average and instant mpg report.

Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™) with Cross Traffic Alert – Ford’s new Cross Traffic Alert feature will help warn drivers of impending traffic while backing out by using radars to pick up moving objects within a 65-foot range from either side of the vehicle. Two warnings are given: an indicator lights up in the corresponding outside mirror and an audible alert is sounded. The feature works in conjunction with Ford’s radar-based Blind Spot Information System, utilizing this system’s two multiple beam radar modules, which are packaged in the rear quarter panels – one per side. The radar identifies when a vehicle enters the defined blind spot zone and illuminates an indicator light on the corresponding sideview mirror providing a warning that a vehicle is approaching.

EasyFuel™ Capless Fuel-Filler System – This industry-exclusive feature eliminates the need to touch dirty gas caps and helps to reduce evaporative emissions that create smog. When fueling is completed and the fuel pump nozzle is removed, the system automatically seals shut.

Patenting is a global activity at Ford, with experts in the United States, Europe, India and China sharing common processes and reporting through Ford Global Technologies, LLC, a wholly owned Ford subsidiary responsible for managing Ford’s intellectual property worldwide.

Johannesburg Buying 143 Scania Buses for New Transport System
STOCKHOLM, Sweden: Now that Johannesburg is making a major investment in the development of an efficient, environmentally sound public bus concept in the run-up to hosting the 2010 World Cup in football, the city has selected Scania (STO:SCVA) (STO:SCVB) to supply all 143 buses in the first phase of its new transport system. Crucial to the South African city choice of Scania was that the company offered a comprehensive package, including vehicles with good operating economy and environmental performance as well as a broad selection of services.

Johannesburg’s investment in efficient public transport will utilise the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) concept, in which buses with high passenger capacity drive in dedicated lanes on existing streets. This enables them to avoid traffic jams and contributes to faster, more environmentally sound transport service.

“For Scania, this is an important breakthrough in South Africa’s rapidly growing city bus market,” says Christoffer Ljungner, Managing Director of Scania South Africa. In Johannesburg alone, about 1,000 new buses will go into service in the public transport fleet over the next four years, and the trend is similar in the country’s other major cities.

Scania has offered Johannesburg a service and maintenance agreement and will also provide both driver and service technician training to the bus company’s employees.

The 143 buses, including 41 articulated buses and 102 conventional models, will be made at Scania’s production plant in Brazil and bodyworked by the Brazilian company Marcopolo. They are part of the initial phase of the BRT system, which will start up during the first half of 2009. The buses will be delivered this year.

The new BRT system which is called Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit is the single largest initiative in Johannesburg’s efforts to solve its growing transport and environmental problems. The City is counting on a significant increase in public transport use, while car traffic in central Johannesburg is expected to decrease by at least 15 percent. The overall impact of these changes on the urban environment will be very positive.

The city has set high standards for the environmental performance of the bus engines. In collaboration with the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), Johannesburg concluded that these engines must meet the European Union’s Euro 4 environmental standard. This is one level higher than the South African national standard − Euro 3 − and implies a 60 percent reduction in particulate emissions and a 30 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions compared to Euro 3.

CCI, which was launched in 2006 by the U.S.-based Clinton Foundation, is an initiative aimed at stimulating the business-like use of cleaner technological solutions to reduce climate change in major cities around the world.

The articulated buses, which are 18 metres long and have room for 112 passengers, will be equipped with Scania 9-litre, 310 hp Euro 4 engines. The other buses are 12 metres long and accommodate 81 passengers. They will be equipped with Scania 9-litre, 270 hp Euro 4 engines. All engines will feature exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology, which reduces emissions during actual combustion, thereby eliminating the need for aftertreatment equipment.

Black Horse Taxi Finance Has Competitive Rates And Is Still Lending To Drivers
LONDON, United Kingdom –: LTI’s financial arm, Black Horse Taxi Finance, is still helping drivers buy new Taxis. While many banks have stopped lending or reduced the amount that they will lend to borrowers, Black Horse Taxi Finance has continued to provide specialist loans and its business as usual for drivers looking for a new deal in 2009.

“I’ve been asked by some drivers if there is still competitive finance available to buy a TX4 and the answer is absolutely yes,” said Rob Laidler, LTI’s Sales Director.

“It’s an excellent time to buy a TX4. Dealers are offering some of the most competitive deals ever available and at a time when interest rates are really low and with VAT at 15% drivers can get themselves a real bargain. Added to this Black Horse Taxi Finance continue to provide funds for drivers to take the opportunity to capitalise on the current offers,” said Rob.

After being approached by a number of drivers, who were concerned that there was no longer the available credit to buy a new cab, Rob said, “If drivers are thinking of getting a good deal on a TX4 but worried that they cannot get finance. I would say get down to your local dealer now because it business as usual and there is finance available at great rates.”

Land Rover Australia Records Annual Sales Boost In 2008
CHATSWOOD, Australia - With a total of 4,320 retails in 2008, Land Rover achieved its third consecutive year of growth in Australia. In fact, Land Rover was one of the few automotive brands to actually better its 2007 retail result, with a 16.5% increase over the previous year. Land Rover's performance can be contributed to the continued success of the Discovery 3, still our best selling model in Australia, even after 5 years in the marketplace.

During 2008 the Discovery 3 added to its already impressive list of over 108 awards worldwide, including 16 Down under, winning the prestigious Australia's Best Cars 'All Terrain 4WD of the Year' Award for an unprecedented fourth year in succession. In addition, the Discovery 3 also took out the Carsales Network People's Choice Awards for the 'Best Luxury 4WD' and Overlander Magazine Award for the 'Best 4WD' for 2008.

The Defender 110 and Freelander 2 continued to make inroads into the highly competitive SUV segments with increases of 193% and 83.2% respectively over the previous year. While at the top end of the market the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Vogue continued their reign as the ultimate status SUVs, the highly refined and frugal TDV8 diesel engine proving to be a popular choice with customers.

General Manger, Roger Jory, said "It's a testament to Land Rover's excellent product that the company was able to record such a strong sales result in 2008, especially in the face of the current global economic situation.

Looking forward to 2009, with such a dedicated dealer network and exceptional product lineup, Land Rover is in a great position to minimise the impact of this economic uncertainty and continue to thrive in the Australian market."

Mitsubishi Normal Plant Now Down 12 Weeks; Honda, Nissan Cut Production
Mitsubishi Motors Corp.’s Normal, IL, plant adds five more weeks of down time due to bulging inventories, the Bloomington, IL, Pantagraph newspaper’s website reports.

Mitsubishi previously scheduled a 7-week closure at Normal, beginning Feb. 16 and ending April 6.

The additional five weeks means the plant, which builds the Galant sedan, Eclipse sports car and Endeavor cross/utility vehicle, now will restart production May 11.

During the 12-week period, workers will be able to report to work and earn full pay. A Mitsubishi spokesman tells the newspaper workers can receive training for building ’10 models.

Mitsubishi’s actions come on top of Tuesday’s announcement by Honda of America Mfg. Inc. it is cutting 29,000 more units out of its current fiscal-year production plan, ending March 31.

Honda reportedly will reduce vehicle builds by about 6,000 units at its Lincoln, AL, plant and also eliminate Lincoln’s temporary workers by late April.

Honda will slice 9,000 units at its Alliston, ON, Canada, plant and eliminate 14,000 units at its two Ohio plants.

Honda’s North American reductions will be achieved through the elimination of shifts, slowing of lines and/or idling of assembly lines.

Honda also is trimming 21,000 units of production in Japan from its fiscal-year plan.

Meanwhile, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. reportedly is halting production at its Mexico plants in the first quarter. Nissan will shut down its Aguascalientes plant for 26 days and Cuernavaca facility for 12 days, due to the slowdown in North American demand.

Opel’s Version of Volt Geneva Bound; Cadillac Kills XLR
Car buyers will get their first peek at General Motors Corp.’s upcoming plug-in hybrid for the European market, when the auto maker pulls the curtain back on the Opel Ampera at the Geneva auto show in March.

The Ampera is Europe’s version of the Chevrolet Volt that is expected to bow in the U.S. in late-2010. Using the Volt’s electric powertrain, now labeled Voltec by GM, the 5-door, 4-seat Ampera is capable of traveling 37 miles (60 km) on its lithium-ion battery pack before needing assistance from its small, internal-combustion engine.

The Ampera’s battery pack can be recharged with a standard 230-volt outlet.

GM says 80% of German drivers travel less than 31 miles (50 km) per day.

“With the Ampera, (Adam Opel GmbH) will be the first European automobile manufacturer to provide customers several hundred kilometers of non-stop electric driving,” says Alain Visser, GM Europe’s chief marketing officer.

GM does not say when the Ampera will hit European showrooms.

Meanwhile, GM says it will end production of the Cadillac XLR in the second quarter, idling about 40 workers at the auto maker’s Bowling Green, KY, plant, which also makes the Chevrolet Corvette. XLR sales fell 28.6% to 1,250 units.

“The XLR played a great role for the brand,” says Cadillac spokeswoman Joanne Krell. “It’s not unusual to see products come into the portfolio and then go off (over time).”

She says Cadillac believes the market gap left by the 2-seat XLR hardtop convertible will be filled by the CTS coupe, whose launch has been delayed until next year. That car is smaller, more powerful and has two more seats than the outgoing XLR, making it better suited to today’s market, Krell says.

Ford Ka, with low insurance
For fans of low cost motoring, Ford's new Ka is now on sale with lower insurance groups across the range.

The insurance rating on new Ka starts at 1E - the lowest rating available - for the Studio model.

All others are rated 2E (on the 20 group system) including the new diesel option available on Zetec series.

These low ratings reflect the range of safety features available on the new model, including a stiff body structure with reinforced steel door beams and Ford's Intelligent Protection System which integrates airbags, seat belts and seating technologies.

The Ka's security features also contribute to the insurance rating and include shielded door and ignition locks.

In addition, data provider CAP has set the all-new Ka residual values (RVs) with an average rise of 14 per cent over three years / 60,000 miles.

Jaguar salutes Mike Hawthorn
The market town of Farnham in Surrey came to a standstill last week in an automotive tribute to Mike Hawthorn.

On Sunday 25th January, thousands of spectators stood in the pouring rain to remember the motor racing legend, who died 50 years ago.

Hawthorn was killed when he crashed his car on the Guildford by-pass.

Police closed off streets in the town centre for the procession, which consisted of more than 70 racing and sports cars worth an estimated £40 million.

Jaguar, for whom Mike drove, sent their famous Long nose D-Type in which Mike won the 12 hour race at Reims in France in 1956.

It was driven on Sunday by motor racing champion Damon Hill.

Sir Stirling Moss and his wife Susie drove a Jaguar C-Type.

Co organiser Michael Ballard said: " It is fitting that Mike should be remembered on the 50th anniversary of his death.

"He won the Formula One World Driver's Championship in October 1958 by a single point - just as Lewis Hamilton did in 2008, almost 50 years later."

Loan package for UK car makers
The government is to offer a loan package worth a potential £2.3bn to support the UK car industry.

Announcing the plan, Business Secretary Lord Mandelson described the car industry as 'vital to British manufacturing.'

Emergency finance measures include up to £1bn of treasury-backed loans, with the freeing up of a further £1.3bn from the European Investment Bank.

With the £1bn loan earmarked for research and development, there was a definite 'green' undercurrent to the announcement, which Mandelson insisted was not a 'bail out'.

The Business Secretary said, "Today's measures will provide a specific boost to the industry, providing real help and laying the foundations of its reinvention for a low carbon future."

U.K. Auto Bailout under Fire
LONDON — British labor unions assailed the government's $3.5 billion rescue plan for the mostly foreign-owned U.K. auto industry as inadequate and a "massive disappointment." One opposition politician branded it "pretty small beer."

At issue are the terms and scope of the deal, which the government insisted is "not a bailout." The agreement comes in the form of loan guarantees, half of which will support loans from the European Investment Bank, and are aimed primarily at vehicle manufacturers and suppliers investing in "green" research and development.

At least one British car company, Group Lotus, which is owned by Malaysia's Proton, responded favorably, saying it "welcomes the government's investment boost." Lotus has emerged as a leader in developing green technologies for the auto industry.

Virtually all of Britain's once-independent automakers are now owned or controlled by foreign companies, among them Jaguar Land Rover by India's Tata Motors, MG Rover by China's Shanghai Motors and Aston Martin by a consortium of Kuwaiti and British investors. General Motors owns Vauxhall, and Ford owns Ford of Britain.

2011 MINI Crossover coming to Frankfurt in production form
According to BMW, the reception to its MINI Crossover Concept from the Paris Motor Show was so positive that the automaker approved the project for production in 2011 just four weeks after it debuted. The production version of the jacked-up MINI CUV is slated to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, which is right on schedule with earlier projections. Don't expect to see the concept's trick rear doors or the side-hinged driver's side portal on the production model, which will instead rely on four normal front-hinged openings and a standard tailgate. Also on the menu is an optional four-wheel drive system complete with low range when drivers want to tackle the Rubicon, which is, of course, never.

According to sources at MINI, the car will retain the brand's trademark kart-like handling, in spite of the ample ground clearance and meaty rolling stock that will be required on a vehicle with off-road intensions. In any case, the biggest MINI won't come cheap. Expect the 2011 MINI Crossover to pick up where the current range lets off, with a base price of around $29K. MINI also promises a full range of available options, so consider that figure nothing more than a vague starting point for the customizers among us.

Field of Dreams: Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race Taking Bids for Would-Be Racer
LONG BEACH, California — For those whose stardom fantasies involve a Nomex suit and a racetrack rather than a microphone and Simon Cowell, the 33rd Annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race is offering a chance for glory. It comes at a price, of course: A spot on the starting grid is up for auction in February, with proceeds going to charity.

Would-be racers can bid for the slot via the Toyota and Grand Prix Foundation of Long Beach Web site. A week of online bidding starts at $25,000 and takes place from 12:01 a.m. PT on Wednesday, February 4, until 5:00 p.m. PT on February 11. Proceeds benefit the foundation, which in turn spreads out the money among charitable organizations in the Long Beach area. Toyota will additionally donate $5,000 in the winner's name to the national Racing for Kids program, which benefits children's hospitals.

The event is a 10-lap sprint race on the 1.97-mile Long Beach street course. It takes place on Saturday, April 18, as part of the festivities surrounding the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. The winner will be behind the wheel of a race-prepped Scion tC and decked out in a custom-made professional racing suit, including shoes, gloves and helmet.

Fortunately for the others in the race, the winning bidder also gets a four-day stint at the Fast Lane Racing School at Willow Springs Raceway in March to prepare for the Pro/Celebrity event. The names of the celebrities who will participate in the race have not yet been released, but previous years have seen such A-listers as Jay Leno, Clint Eastwood, George Lucas and John Elway — and such pros as Parnelli Jones, Dan Gurney and Danica Patrick — so the entry list should be interesting.

Alpina to debut B6 GT3 and B7 at Geneva show
BMW may have its own tuning division that carries its vaunted M badge, but Alpina enjoys a close relationship of its own with the Bavarian automaker. Alpina's tuner cars are built right off the BMW assembly line and available directly through BMW dealerships. One of the largest tuner firms in the industry, Alpina is preparing to debut two of its newest offerings at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March.

First up to bat is the B6 GT3, the racer with which Alpina has returned to motorsport competition after a 20-year absence. Those details have already been released, but joining the race-tuned 6 Series is tipped to be the new B7, Alpina's take on the latest F01-generation BMW 7 Series sedan that's anticipated to pull over 500 horsepower out of its centrifugal-supercharged 4.4-liter V8. So far, all we've seen is a teaser sketch and a raft of speculation on the supercharged 7, but we'll be looking forward to getting more solid information as we get closer to the Swiss show in the coming weeks.

Escorts lowers net loss on higher sales
New Delhi, Escorts Ltd reported a lower loss to Rs 0.3 crore (Rs 5.92 crore) for the first quarter ended December 2008. This is mainly due to the increase in sales.

New product launches in agriculture and construction segment boosted net sales for the quarter by 17 per cent to Rs 495.26 crore (Rs 424.25 crore).

The company introduced a 55-hp tractor for agriculture and non farm applications and a pick and a carry crane for the construction industry.

“The slowdown in the disbursal of farm-directed finance poses a big challenge. It is hoped that the government will step up efforts to accelerate lending and ensure that targets for priority sector finance are met,” said Mr Rajan Nanda, CMD, in a statement.

Motor industry rescue package – reaction
Reaction to Lord Mandelson's rescue package for car makers has received a mixed reception from the motor industry and leading political figures.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) welcomed the announcement, saying it recognised the importance of the industry.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: 'The UK motor industry is productive and globally competitive, with a long-term future at the heart of the low carbon agenda.'

David Smith, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, whose company is in the middle of designing a 'greener' range said: 'We are encouraged by this.'

Firms such as Jaguar are well placed to benefit from the loans guarantee package, which, to comply with strict EU rules, must be used for research and development of environmentally friendly technology.

The news that Lord Mandelson had asked Trade and Investment Minister Mervyn Davies to look into ways of stimulating car sales through improved credit liquidity was also welcomed.

Finance and Leasing Association director general, Stephen Sklaroff, said: 'We are encouraged Lord Mandelson acknowledged the importance of motor finance in helping to kick-start the economy.

'We look forward to early discussions with Mervyn Davies on how best to support all types of lenders to free up credit for new and used cars.'

Tony Woodley, of the union Unite, said the package was 'a massive disappointment to the tens of thousands of workers employed in or dependent on this vital industry'.

He went on to say: 'Two billion pounds sounds like a lot of money, but at least half of this will be taken up by Vauxhall and Jaguar Land Rover alone. The spectre of redundancy is still hovering over thousands of skilled jobs.'

Shadow Business Secretary Ken Clark denounced the package as 'pretty small beer.' He also pointed out that the loans from the EU had been announced last year.

Toyota to Recall 2006-'07 Yaris
TORRANCE, California — Toyota Motor Sales USA is recalling 134,900 Yaris vehicles from the 2006 and 2007 model years to fix a problem with the front seatbelts.

"Toyota has determined that the seatbelt pre-tensioner deployment may affect the sound-insulating foam in the center pillar following a collision," said the automaker in a statement on Wednesday.

"There are no reported cases of this condition in the United States, and no other Toyota or Lexus vehicles are involved," said Toyota in a statement.

The U.S. recall is part of a larger global recall of more than 1.35 million Toyota Vitz, Belta and Ractis cars built from January 2005 to April 2008, according to Reuters. That recall involves a defect in the seatbelt, a component in the exhaust system or both. One case of fire was reported in Japan due to the faulty seatbelt design, which could cause a noise-absorber device to melt when the seatbelt tensioner is activated in a collision.

2010 Ford Fusion hybrid earns full $3,400 federal tax credit
In the market for a fuel-sipping mid-size sedan? Now, and for a limited time only, buyers of the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid will be eligible for the $3,400 federal tax credit for hybrid vehicles. Late last year, Ford hit the magic 60,000 limit on individual hybrid sales that's been imposed by the Feds, so the tax credit for all of the Blue Oval's hybrid machines will be halved beginning on April 1st. Beginning in October, the credit will again be cut in half to $850 and the entire amount will be gone starting January 1st of 2010.

Tax credit or not, the 2010 Fusion Hybrid's EPA rating of 41 mpg city and 36 mpg highway bests the Toyota Camry Hybrid by a whopping eight mpg in the city and two mpg on the highway. For what it's worth, hybrid tax credits for Toyota (and Honda, for that matter) have already expired.

Aston Martin plant down to three-day work week
Late last year, Aston Martin announced that it would reduce its ranks by some 600 workers to cope with a sales slide of 28% in 2008. Apparently, those cuts, which are now halfway completed, weren't enough to stem the tide of red ink, as Bond's favorite automaker has now said it will place its entire staff of assembly line workers on a work week that starts on Monday and ends on Wednesday. A total of 1,250 individuals now work at the Gaydon, Warwickshire plant, and almost half of those employees will be affected by the three-day work week.

Bentley, another famous British automaker, announced its own production cuts just yesterday. In response to the industry hardships faced by automakers in the U.K., the British government has promised £2.3 billion worth of aid, though we're not yet sure how much will go to smaller companies like Aston Martin.

Go Red For Women(TM) and Chicago/NW Indiana Jiffy Lube Launch Year Two Partnership
CHICAGO, -- Building on a record-breaking first-year fundraising partnership with the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women(TM) campaign in 2008, Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Jiffy Lube service centers are once again committed to raising money and awareness to combat the nation's leading killer of women. From January 28 through March 16, customers can support this cause with a donation of $3 at participating locations, for which they will receive a Jiffy Lube Maintenance Partners for Life (MPFL) savings book containing heart healthy recipes and $100 in savings from Jiffy Lube.

Each $3 MPFL contribution made during the campaign, either online or at participating service centers, will be donated in full to Go Red For Women(TM).

"Last year, we raised a record (for a first-year Go Red For Women(TM) partner) $1 million nationwide, and more than $60,000 through our local participating service centers," said Dan Petrey, president of the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Jiffy Lube Owners Association. "Our goal is to increase both numbers by 50 percent, and we believe we can do it!"

Prevalence of Heart Disease

Nearly 2,400 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each day -- an average of one death every 37 seconds. Heart disease is the nation's number one killer of men and women. Yet, despite more women dying of heart disease than the next five causes of death combined, only 21 percent of women view heart disease as their greatest health threat.

Healthy Hearts & Healthy Vehicles

Jiffy Lube Maintenance Partners for Life leverages the parallels between properly maintaining both heart health and vehicle health, and educates people on smart preventive maintenance of their bodies and vehicles. Regular visits to the doctor, along with proper diet and exercise, help keep the body and heart healthy. Likewise, following the vehicle manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule can help keep a vehicle running properly.

NxtGen Emission Controls Inc. Announces the Appointment of Jim Mann as Vice...
VANCOUVER, British Columbia, -- NxtGen Emission Controls Inc. announced today the appointment of Jim Mann as vice president of finance and administration. The announcement was made by Jeremy W. Holt, president and chief executive officer. NxtGen is an emerging leader in syngas technology for clean diesel and engine combustion optimization.

"I am very pleased to welcome Jim as the vice president of finance and administration for NxtGen," Holt said. "Jim brings 25 years of experience in accounting and senior financial management roles to our organization at a critical time in our development. His varied experience and proven versatility will be a great asset to the team in our continued transformation from technology developer to a producer of products for the cleantech engine market."

According to Holt, Mann will be based at NxtGen's Corporate Headquarters and Technology Center in Burnaby, British Columbia and will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company's finances, as well as information technology systems and operations support. A key part of Mann's role will be augmenting the October 2008 Series B investment of $15.4 million USD with new capital funds from investors, non dilutive and debt sources to support production growth.

Mann comes to NxtGen from Mustang Survival Corp., a privately owned marine and aerospace survival wear manufacturer with U.S. and Canadian manufacturing sites. Previously, Mann held senior financial management positions with DRI Dehydration Research Inc. (now EnWave Corp.), Jantzen Canada Inc. and A&W Food Services of Canada Ltd.

Mann received his Chartered Account designation in 1984 and is a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Illinois (2005). He received a Bachelor of Commerce degree in accounting from the University of British Columbia (1981).

NxtGen has developed innovative technology that makes existing and new internal combustion engines cleaner and more efficient to meet global emission regulations and CO2 targets. NxtGen has successfully miniaturized syngas production equipment for use in light- and heavy-duty vehicles. "Syngas" is a hydrogen-rich gas that NxtGen produces from diesel fuel and air. It provides a platform for advanced emission reduction and combustion technologies for multiple fuels, including diesel, biodiesel, natural gas and gasoline. NxtGen's first product, a retrofit syngas diesel particulate filter (DPF) system, is targeted at intra-city diesel vehicles: DPF regeneration can be initiated at the very low temperature of 200 C and sustained in stop / start city traffic, which solves a key industry problem.

NxtGen's second retrofit product will reduce NOx emissions by 70 percent for low temperature intra-city diesel vehicles and avoids the cost and complexity of urea-SCR technology. NxtGen is also developing systems for original equipment manufacturers that will achieve particulate and NOx emission reductions greater than 80 percent.

NxtGen Emission Controls Inc. is privately held by institutional investors. The company's headquarters and technology center is located in Burnaby, British Columbia and the manufacturing and application engineering center is located in Wixom, Mich.
