Ford Model T (1909, U.S.)

The Model T greatly
contributed to the spread of motorization by introducing various mechanisms for easy
driving, such as a planetary gear transmission, as well as a low price owing to mass
production that cut costs. A total of 15,007,033 units were built from 1908 to 1927, and
the car triggered a revolution in social life-style.
The Model T introduced various features to facilitate driving, and the transmission was
integrated with the engine. Its planetary gears -- two forward and one back -- could be
shifted without use of a clutch. These mechanisms were also intended to meet
mass-production system.
Rolls-Royce 40/50HP Silver Ghost (1910, U.K.)
The Rolls-Royce was definitely
expensive, but as a mass-produced car that combined high product quality and reliability,
it was the forerunner of luxury cars. The six-cylinder model with 40/50 hp, introduced in
1906, is considered the most outstanding Rolls-Royce. It was called the "Silver
Ghost" for its smooth, quiet ride and silver body.
Rolls-Royce created an in-line 6-cylinder engine for the Silver Ghost by placing two
blocks of three cylinders each in tandem. Other mechanisms that contributed to its
legendary quiet and easy operation included a balanced 7-bearing crankshaft, an oil pump
for lubrication, and a dual ignition system for easy starts and low speed driving.
Attention to details, like leather casings for its leaf springs as a rust and noise
prevention measure, contributed to its reputation as the finest luxury car.
