32. Renault Alpine A610 (1985)
This gave a mighty boost to the reputation of French-made supercars. Its
turbocharged 3.0?litre V6 was good for 250bhp and a 0-60mph time of around
5.4 seconds. On the right road, Renault's finest could even give a Porsche
911 a run for its money.
31. MG Metro 6R4 (1984)
Designed by Formula One team Williams and built by Reliant Cars, the 6R4
was a truly cosmopolitan effort. Powered by a quad-cam V6 engine later
used in the Jaguar XJ220, it was one of the wildest cars to come out of
the Group B rallying era during the mid-Eighties. Only 200 were built,
and most of these were stripped down to make spares for the competition
team.
30. Ferrari F355 (1994)
The 360M is a technically better car, but for us the 355 is as close as
you can get to automotive heaven. The best-looking Ferrari; since the
Dino, the 355 was a beautifully packaged supercar - arresting to look
at without resorting to the vulgar. Its mid-mounted V8 was a delight,
and the F1-type shift was better to use than the manual gate.
29. Porsche 959 (1987)
Yet another refugee of the Group 15 racing and rallying era, the 959 was
designed primarily as a competition car with a production run of 400.
Although Group B had effectively been banned before the first 959 was
built, Porsche had little trouble finding buyers for the four-wheel-drive
turbocharged missiles that produced 450bhp and carried a DM 150,000 price
tag.
28. Lotus Esprit (1974)
Basic design dates back to the early Seventies, but the wedge-shaped Esprit
has stood the test of time well. Constant tweaks over the years have ensured
that the mid-engined British sports car's chassis has kept its sparkle,
while the 3.5-litre twin-turbo V8 engine introduced in 1996 sees it top
60mph in less than five seconds.
27. Honda NSX (1990)
Genuine Japanese supercars are rare. With this one, though, Honda got
a foothold on the ladder. Some maintain that the NSX is a touch too clinical
to cut it as one of the true greats, but its mid-mounted V6 sounds glorious,
while the chassis is as sharp as they get. Still a great drive.
