The World's Greatest Sportscars

38. Aston Martin Vantage 600 (1999)
Nothing delicate about this one. With a thunderous 600bhp V8 and gearing that could whisk it to well over 200mph, it was a glorious foil to the likes of Ferrari's dainty 355. Not many cars make a Diablo feel nimble, but this was one of them. Beautifully appointed inside and out, it was a four-wheel showcase for British engineering skills.

Maserati Bora

37. Maserati Bora (1971)
This was Maserati's answer to the Lamborghini Miura. Penned by Guigiaro, it had a 4.7-litre V8 that was mounted longitudinally behind the driver, and was the Italian marque's first-ever mid-engined sportster. Stunning styling, combined with a top speed of 165mph and finely honed chassis dynamics, made it a viable, cheaper alternative to a Lamborghini.

36. Toyota GT One (1998)
Beneath the streamlined body beat the heart of a grand Prix race car. A carbon fibre tub chassis housed a state-of-the-art six-speed sequential gearbox and a twin-turbo 3.6-litre V8 pumping out 600bhp. Only one was built, and Toyota is keeping it.

Lamborghini Diablo

35. Lamborghini Diablo (1990)
After the Countach came the Diablo. But by the time the 'Devil' had arrived the days of thundering V12 supercars were numbered. Although it improved - ending up with 572bhp in GT form - the arrival of the McLaren F I three years later took the edge off its appeal. However, it remains the sole surviving member of the 200mph club.

34. Nissan R390 (1998)
As with Mercedes, Nissan was desperate to succeed at Le Mans, hence the R390. Designed and built by Tom Walkinshaw Racing, it had a 3.5-litre V8 twin-turbo engine mounted behind the driver, was good for 550bhp and had a top speed of more than 200mph. Only one was ever built.

Alfa SZ

33. Alfa SZ (1989)
Time tends to lessen the impact of wild designs, but not with the SZ. Regardless of whether you loved or loathed the Alfa's outrageous clothes, the SZ was a great car to drive. Essentially a short-wheelbase 75 with a mildly tuned V6, it handled beautifully.
