Some Off-roaders - AG interrupted !

Preamble

During may last 3-yrs or so of ‘practice’, off and on I come across queries from visitors which are somewhat removed from the run of the mill kind – like what car to buy.

What follows now is a selection out of my personal archives, which I hope visitors like you will find informative and useful.

I have M800 Euro II (2001 model) but with a 4 speed gearbox.

1) Kindly tell difference between a 4/5 speed gearbox model i.e 800 DX
2) What is BHP of my car.
3) Is there an Electronic ignition system in my car or it has only electronic fuel injection.

MUL Engg Dept advised me some time back as follows :

1) M800/2-Valve/Cyl Carb type - 36 Bhp

2) -do- -do- Mpfi - 37 Bhp

3) -do- "4-Valves/Cyl"/Mpfi - 45 Bhp.

What you have is per Sl. 2 above and the DX is top of the line - Sl#3. In addition, the Dx has a 5-Speed Gearbox, somewhat like Zen.

The 5th/Overdrive Gear is essentially a 'Cruise' gear for highways - resulting lowering the engine rpm by about 15-20% for the same road speed. It thus reduces the fuel consumption too but at the cost of loss of proportionate 'pick-up' - naturally.

ALL M800s/EU-IIs have 'Electronic Distributor' Type Ignition - similar to what Zen and Esteem had it to begin with. In otherwords, there are no Db-Points and Condensers to worry/replace about.

Can the mechanical injection pump be replaced by an electronic injection system in Diesel Cars such as Indica without any change in engine?

If yes what improvements it will lead to in the performance, fuel efficiency
and emissions of the car?

I am afraid the answer is No !

What you're talking about is referred to as the 'common rail diesel' fuel injection system - which is quite akin to 'Mpfi' Petrols. If it's any consolation, it's going to take an organisation like Telco ~ 2-years to do it 'inhouse' for their Indica's !

Why a Harley's beat is different !

There is no denying that a Harley-Davidson motorcycle has a unique sound, especially if the mufflers have been removed! Even with the mufflers on, however, it sounds different. The reason for the sound has to do with the way the engine is designed.
If you have read the HowStuffWorks article How Car Engines Work, then you know how a basic four-stroke gasoline engine operates. A piston goes through the intake, compression, combustion and exhaust strokes every two revolutions of the crankshaft. When your lawn mower is idling, you can hear the pop-pop-pop-pop sound of the individual strokes. What you are actually hearing is the sound of the compressed gases in the cylinder escaping when the exhaust valve opens. Each pop is the sound of the exhaust valve opening one time, and it happens on every second revolution of the crankshaft.

In a two-cylinder, horizontally opposed engine, the pistons are timed so that one fires on one revolution of the crankshaft and the other fires on the next revolution -- so one of the two pistons fires on every revolution of the crankshaft. This seems logical and gives the engine a balanced feeling. To create this type of engine, the crankshaft has two separate pins for the connecting rods from the pistons. The pins are 180 degrees apart from one another.

A Harley engine has two pistons. The difference in the Harley engine is that the crankshaft has only one pin, and both pistons connect to it. This design, combined with the V arrangement of the cylinders, means that the pistons cannot fire at even intervals. Instead of one piston firing every 360 degrees, a Harley engine goes like this:
A piston fires.
The next piston fires at 315 degrees.
There is a 405-degree gap.
A piston fires.
The next piston fires at 315 degrees.
There is a 405-degree gap.
And the cycle continues.
At idle, you can hear the pop-pop sound followed by a pause. So its sound is pop-pop...pop-pop...pop-pop. That is the unique sound you hear!

(Q4)

A month back I bought an Alto LX. From reviews etc and some replies it looks as if Alto has distributorless ignition. However, when I saw under the hood of my car, I am clearly seeing what I take to be a distributor (to the right side of engine when seen from front) and Coil (fixed to the rear wall of engine compartment). Does LX model come with DLI ? If not, can a DLI be retrofitted ? How much will it cost ?

Retrofitting a DLI on Alto-Lx is not possible, as the cylinder head sub-assy is common with M800-Dx/Mpfi.

Alto-Vx (4-Cyl) has 2 ‘ignitor’ coils which energies 2-cyl each. These coils are
placed above spark plugs on the cam cover. In case of Lx- 3 coils would be
needed - 1 for each cylinder - besides other changes in HT wiring harness/ECU
etc.
