ME & MY CAR - Rohit Roy

Jeep Grand Cherokee
Actor Rohit Roy likes his vehicles made the American way.

‘it was the shape and distinct lines of the cherokee that roy fell for hook, line, and sinker.’

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of... you guessed it…a car. This also holds true for television’s Sarkkar Rohit Roy, who recently acquired a hot set of wheels for himself. After his debut in the afternoon soap, Swabhiman, the charismatic actor, with roots in one of Bengal’s royal families, worked his way into millions of hearts through praiseworthy performances in television serials and films. With success came all its accompaniements. After setting himself up in a flat that overlooks the Arabian Sea, and dressing up his living room in an elegant tone of white, Roy boy went and got himself a boy toy. No, we’re not talking about the Ambassador that Bengalis are known to have a penchant for. (Even his father owned one, he admits.) This suave star settled for nothing less than the Limited version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee made by DaimlerChrysler.
A grand choice we say. The lean and tall actor, who is well known for carrying the image of one who takes the rough with the smooth, has displayed fine taste in choosing his automobile. However, he tells us that his mother wasn’t too thrilled when he announced his plans for buying the Jeep, as she associated the vehicle with stereotypes of brash cigarette-puffing, beer-guzzling, and muscle-building men. An image manufactured in the minds of audiences using films for decades. Too late, the Grand Cherokee had already accelerated its way into Rohit Roy’s heart and there was no stopping him.
Steering clear of big SUVs now available in the Indian market, Roy chose the American-manufactured Grand Cherokee over what he calls “Jap crap.” It was the shape and the distinct lines of the Grand Cherokee that he fell for hook, line and sinker. During his wonder years, he was smitten by every Grand Cherokee he saw in Hollywood films and that left an indelible impression on his mind. The love for the vehicle was taken a step further during the days when he would hang out with friend and fellow actor Abhishek Bachchan, who drove around in his left-hand drive Cherokee which he had brought back after his stay in Boston. Added to this was the exclusivity factor. Roy acknowledges that with the tag of the star status attached to his profession, he needed something that truly reflected his personality. At the same time, it also had to pander to his occasional ‘bachelor boy’ moods, when he wants to break free and hit the road. Needless to say, the Grand Cherokee turned out to be the only contender.
Having driven the Jeep to Lonavala and Pune, the actor is now planning a getaway to Goa very soon — another excuse to enjoy the raw power that the six cylinder four-litre engine delivers. Talking of power, at the moment, Sarkkar seems to be intoxicated with it and rightly so. As if the Grand Cherokee isn’t enough, he has already set his sights on another American icon. “The Harley Davidson V-Rod is my next buy,” he grins.
