VII)
Use the correct grade of Lubricants/Filters and above all genuine functional
parts. Changing them a little earlier than recommended is far better and
cheaper in the long run, than a little too late.
VIII) Never tamper with the Original wiring harness of
a Car, particularly the present MPFI ones having an EMS Computer on board,
by way of cutting/splicing/twist-jointing it any where, to install non-recommended
electrical accessories of any kind.
IX) Remember that Horns and Starter Motors are NOT continuously
rated, even in a Mercedes or a Rolls Royce. They have to be used as such,
in ‘short bursts’.
X) Ensure that all your 5-Wheels are in perfect shape all
the time, by way of correct (see pt III above) inflation pressures/Alignment/Tread-symmetry
as well as wear and above all, in good ‘Dynamic balance’. For
example, a Tyre once removed from its ‘mount’ to repair a puncture
will NOT have its original balance when re-mounted and as such, must be
re-balanced forthwith. It’s a fallacy that the rear/spare ones do
not need balancing.
I wonder if any of my above ramblings would make any sense to an average
Car Owner. Should that be so, the only conclusion I can draw is that ‘we
all get what we deserve’ – right from a Spouse up to the National
Government!
In Part-II of this ‘presentation’ which will follow shortly,
I’ll take you on a ‘conducted tour’ of what the Cars of
late ‘40s and early ‘50s were like – on ‘Reliability’
and ‘Maintenance’ fronts!
