The government has charted down certain policies for upgradation of existing as well construction of new highways which are as stated below:

North-South & East-West Corridors

(7,300 Kms connecting Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Silchar to Porbandhar)
This plan aims to connect the northern most tip, Jammu to the extreme South - Kanyakumari. Two 8-lane, 7000-kms expressways are to be built for the purpose. According to the Chairman of the task force on infrastructure, Mr. Jaswant Singh, 30 points have been identified by the Government for the purpose.

The North-South Expressway goes from Jammu to Kanyakumari through Delhi, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Coimbatore, and the East-West Expressway runs from Silchar to Somnath through Calcutta.

Total length of North-South Corridor from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and East-West corridor from Silchar to Saurashtra is about 7,300 Kms(including Salem - Cochin spur) . The programme was lauched by Hon'ble Prime Minister Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee on January 2, 1999. The programme will be completed in different phases in a time span of 10 years.
