Mpfi Systems: Part II

Preface

In Part-I of this Article, I have tried to emphasise, amongst other things, on the need for using Petrol Additives and guarding against irreversible damage to OE Wiring Harness of an Mpfi Car.

Let’s dig deeper into these two aspects now…

An FAQ on Additives
I have a Maruti 800 and Zen LX.

Do the petrol/oil additives leave "Carbon" deposits in petrol tank/engine ?

If yes, then what is the need to use them..... and also suggest the remedies for the same as someone asked me not to use the petrol or the oil additives for the vehicle as they create a problem in later stages by depositing carbon content.

An enlightened view

Petrol Additives.

These are specially formulated 'Detergent' Compounds. They prevent Petrol - especially the Unleaded one - from leaving behind any residues upon evaporation in the fuel intake/delivery System - which mainly comprise Gums and Varnishes.

In doing so, they also help better/complete combustion within the cylinders - thus actually preventing the build-up of carbon deposits over a period of time - which have their own undesirable side effects.

Given the poor detergent qualities of our Unleaded Petrol, regular usage of well-branded Petrol Additives is infact recommended by most OEMs in their Owners Handbooks, especially for Mpfi Cars. These have no ill affect whatsoever - either in short or long term.

The question of their leaving any 'carbon' deposits in the Petrol Tank just doesn't arise. However, a word of caution here –

If one hasn’t used them ever, say for > 15 kkm, and then suddenly starts using them, there’s a good possibility of the earlier deposited gums and glues now getting dislodged finding their way into the fuel tank via the ‘fuel-return’ system. This can clog the inlet filter of the in-tank electric fuel pump and overload it - to eventual failure.

The only sure-shot preventive remedy for this is to have your Carburettor or Fuel Injection System professionally cleaned first and then switch over to using such PA’s. Alternatively, start using the PA’s with a full-tank and keep topping it up say every 15 lrs, so as avoid a high concentration of such gums/glues in the fuel tank.
