THE FINAL
FINE TUNE-UP
Upon return from
the above ‘warm-up’ drive, keep the engine running and proceed
as follows:
1) Check and reset
the Dwell/Ign Timing/Idle rpm to the recommended values, as required,
making sure that the Ign timing is reset only after ensuring that the
idle rpm is not > 900, preceded by ‘Dwell’ correction.
For the latter, obviously the engine will have to be switched off.
2) With the three
parameters thus in place, open or close the Carb mixture screw slowly
to get the highest idle rpm. Sometimes this may go even beyond 1000, depending
upon its initial position. Say, it peaks at 1000rpm;
3) Reduce the same
by throttle control screw to 900rpm. Again +/- the mixture screw to the
peak idle rpm position. This time, say it’s 950.
4) Throttle it down
to 900 again and repeat the cycle, till the idle rpm peaks at 950. From
this point on, gently screw-in ONLY the Mixture Screw to bring it down
to 900rpm. Observe for Stability AND Engine vibration. If either is unacceptable,
loosen the mixture screw for satisfactory idling anywhere between 900
to 950rpm.
5) If fitted with
an A/C, OE or Retro, switch it on with blower at max and adjust the Fast
Idle Control Device/FICD screw to yield an rpm of 1050. Switch it off
to see it reverts to normal idle of 900-950. Repeat two three times to
ensure stability. WHILE ADJUSTING IDLE RPM, ALL ELECTRICAL LOADS MUST
BE OFF. IF THE RADIATOR FAN COMES ON, PAUSE TILL IT GOES OFF BEFORE PROCEEDING
FURTHER.
