Maruti
Udyog/MUL recently celebrated rolling off of its 4-millionth Car since its
inception nearly 2-decades ago. This is by no means a small achievement.
The
figure could have been appreciably higher, had the GOI not unnecessarily
meddled into its business affairs – rather than address more pressing
problems which continue to dog the country even > 50-yrs after its independence.
Off the cuff, I've a gut feel that > 85% of the 4m Cars produced by MUL
so far would be Carb type M800/Omni's/Zen/Esteems and > 75% of these
would be M800s and still chugging along merrily in various parts of the
country.
To
get back to the subject, my answer is a big YES. But then as a popular saying
in hindi goes which, when translated, would sound somewhat like ‘
if you want to see Heaven, you have to die first’ !!
So let’s see what makes an M800 or a Carburettor type Zen/Esteem ‘PURR’
and keep purring the way it can. And believe me its quite easy and thus
possible. All it calls for is the interest and some ‘DIY’ skills.
The entire exercise excluding the Carburettor overhaul can be finished in
1/2 a day – provided all the tools and tackles are lined up in advance.
A good Carb overhaul itself can take almost a day – including a couple
of hours of ‘soaking’ involved.
In Part-1 of this 3-Part Article, we shall try to understand the basics
and in the remaining, how to go about achieving them……..
Like all Engines of its genre, to enable it deliver its best that it can,
over-simply put, its entire ‘Fuel and Ignition System’ should
be within the Manufacturer-Recommended Norms. I
doubt if a Garage exists which can do it for you ‘while you wait’.
This is where the catch is as to get over this; ‘you’ have
to die first !
The
Recipe’ for a ‘PURRFECT’ M800
A) Raw
Materials required.
1) Take
a piece of a ‘healthy’ Engine. If over 50kkm old and showing
signs of engine oil consumption, don’t expect ‘purrfect’
results. If in doubt, get a ‘dry compression test’ done
before hand at a reliable MASS. If the readings show below 11 kg/cmsq
with more than +/- 1.0 kg/cmsq variation between the Cylinders –
you’re heading for an engine overhaul instead!
2) Your
determination to achieve the ‘objective’.
