For
those of us who received our driver education before the
cell-phone explosion,
here's a new tip that smacks of good old common sense: Unless
it's an emergency, Drive First, Talk Later.
For
dealing with the growing ranks of Cellular(talking) motorists.
With the increasing number of wireless-phone users on the
road, the only way to drive is defensively.
Always
fasten seatbelts, including those of children and pets.
Driving too fast or too slow can increase the likelihood
of collisions. Stay within the speed limit.
Be
alert. If you notice a car straddling the center line, weaving,
making wide turns, stopping abruptly or responding slowly
to traffic signals, know that the driver may be impaired
or distracted. If you do see a driver on the phone, understand
that he or she may not be giving full attention to the road.
Avoid impaired drivers. Slow down to increase following
distance, or if the driver is behind you, turn at the nearest
corner. Never encourage an impaired driver to pass you.
If an oncoming vehicle crosses into your lane, pull over
to the roadside, sound the horn and flash your lights.
If
you see a motorist driving suspiciously, let the police
know as soon as possible. If you have access to a portable
phone, pull over and notify the police.
Follow
the rules of the road. Don't contest the right of way, or
race with another car during a merge.
Be respectful of other drivers.
Be cautious,
aware and
responsible.
