For starters, a vast
majority of Car owners never bother to read their Cars’ Owners Manuals
which necessarily come with each new one – thinking it’s nothing
more than comprising the initial/free Warranty Services Coupons and having
gone through that, it’s usually a good-bye to regular ‘preventive
maintenance program’/PMP given in each – in terms of time
and mileage.
At best, the more
conscientious ones will have it’s Oils and Filters changed by the
friendly neighbourhood mechanic/FNM – completely overlooking the
fact that a Car is a complex ‘System’ and it’s each
constituent needs regular tweaks at the prescribed intervals by its maker.
Besides, to do full justice to such ‘tweaks’, one requires
sophisticated Test Eqpt AND Servicing Equipment, which the likes of FNM’s
can never dream of owning.
In Part-I, we saw
the Art and Science behind ‘routine’ Servicing a Car –
such that it’s always at the peak of its performance AND reliability.
In Part-II now, we
shall see what can be done for ‘low-loggers’ without any technical
compromises……….
‘Preventive
Maintenance’ For Low-Logging Cars
A lot of Car Owners
are under the wrong notion that Cars have to be serviced based on mileage
logged alone. This is not true – as explained in the following Q
n A :
Example -
A
A car like, say, Matiz
has done only 11000 kms in about two years but it is due for 30000 kms
service from its ‘calendar’. So dies one go for servicing
by calendar or by kms – as one can save a lot of money by going
for Calendar/Kms servicing.
Alternatively, can
one only change oils occasionally, get engine tuned every six months and
go for the 30000 kms servicing as and when one reaches there.
Example -
B
Say one has a 2-year-old
Maruti 800STD car, which has done about 7500Kms so far. It’s used
sparingly; about 100 to 200Kms per month, with a long drive may be once
or twice a year.
So what kind of a
‘PMP’ should such low-loggers be subjected to ?
