Building on the success of the i10, Hyundai launched the i20, the international replacement for the Getz, early in 2009. The i20 did not replicate the runaway success of its predecessor - the i10, but the Korean manufacturer has now launched a diesel variant that should hopefully reignite sales says OverDrive (Aug. ’09).

The new diesel 1.4-litre CRDi engine makes 90PS at 4000rpm and the torque peaks between 1750rpm and 2750rpm at 22Nm. The powerful common-rail diesel incorporates innovative technology like the Electrical EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) to reduce pollution. The Hyundai Verna and Getz share a 1.5-litre CRDi engine but the i20 gets an all-new 16-valve DOHC in-line four that is currently imported.

The new engine is arguably the quietest and most refined diesel in a hatchback in India. Roller rocker and HLA (Hydraulic Lash Adjusters) ensure noise dampening without compromising on performance and mated to the 1.4-litre CRDi engine is a fantastic, precise and slick, short throw five-speed gearbox that is a delight.

Its refinement is matched by its relaxed demeanor. That said, the acceleration time is impressive with the i20 taking 5.1sec to reach 60kmph and 13.44sec to 100kmph. The only hatchback in India with discs all around, the i20’s braking is spot on. She takes 4.13s and 65.36m to standstill from 100kmph and 29.56 from 80kmph to standstill. The fuel efficiency is also great with an overall figure of 15.1kmpl.

Toyota and Honda always admit that their biggest rivals aren’t the Germans but the astute and diligent Koreans. This is a testament to Hyundai’s evolution as a global player.

One of the reasons for the Hyundai turnaround and success has been improving build quality. The fit and finish is premium and interiors and engine feel top-notch. The i20 in particular is composed and dynamically accomplished especially when compared to the Getz. It drives like a German car which is not surprising since much of the high speed and handling testing has been in Deutschland. The high steel construction also increases body rigidity which aids handling. Another brownie point is the i20’s five star Euro NCAP rating. However that rating was accorded to a traction control equipped i20 which has not made its way to India yet.

The top-end Asta Option trim variant offers first-in-class features like six airbags, sunroof and alloys. It bears a Rs. 7, 20,430 (ex-showroom New Delhi) price tag while the standard Asta costs Rs. 6, 83, 431. This makes the i20 cheaper than the Fabia and quite a bit more expensive than the Swift.

To sum up, the i20 diesel is a competent car for both in-city and highway use. Slightly lower gearing would have given this car a lot more appeal in terms of drivability and could have made this the best car in its segment. It is a well rounded package with elegant looks, a refined and frugal engine and good dynamic characteristics. However only a compare will tell just where the i20 stands compared to its rivals ends OverDrive (Aug. ’09).
