Four months of Mercedes ownership – sounds like a dream and it sure has been say OverDrive testers (Aug. ’09). The two things that really stand out in a Merc are comfort and performance and the C220 CDI is no different. The first is an obvious: Mercs have always known to be comfortable and cosseting and with the C220 there has been dilution of those core brand values. The suspension is supple enough to take the edge out of most bumps and potholes, the steering is light and pleasantly easy to twirl and the seats are wide and comfy. Even the cabin architecture and colours used give it an airy feel and encourages serenity and a laidback driving style. So it doesn’t encourage rapid motoring but when you do floor the throttle she responds beautifully.
The engine is noticeably refined and there’s barely any diesel grumble inside. It’s mated to a five-speed automatic that’s again very refined and goes about its job in the most unobtrusive manner. As standard all C’s get the agility control package that stiffens the dampers when driven hard thus giving the C220 responsiveness and body control that gives one the confidence to drive her hard and fast.
Goodies on the car included Xenon headlamps with washers, auto headlamps and wipers, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity and a 6-CD indash changer, leather seats and sunroof though there are no parking sensors and only partial electric seat adjustment.
But still at the end of the day, a Mercedes is a Mercedes and that’s that.
