Air-Con Mega Test: THE COOLEST OF THEM ALL

The colour of each bar is according to the segment the car belongs to. The ranking given on the bar after the name of the vehicle is the insegment ranking of the car. The figure on the bar on the left of the name of the vehicle is the final temperature rating of the car.

MARUTI 800 DX	8th
Even if the Maruti 800 ranks last on the air-con rankings it does not mean that its air-con does not cool. The cooling is slow and the cabin temperature just remains a little over the comfortable mark after the half an hour drive.

MARUTI BALENO	1st
The car with the best cooling air-con system could do with better circulation and a quieter system. Or perhaps it has achieved the best balance between noise levels and good circulation for a car having vents upfront only.

OPEL ASTRA GLD	2nd
The surprise of the package of the mid-sized cars is the Astra turbo-diesel. The average cabin temperature went lower than that of the Baleno but the Maruti cooled at a faster rate during the crucial first 10 minutes.

HONDA CITY 1.5 EXI	3rd
Surprising that the Honda City 1.5 came in below two cars in its segment because we have often felt and said that it has the best AC in its class. We were proved right for the small car segment, but this best illustrates the need for such an exercise.

HYUNDAI ACCENT 1.5 GLX	4th
Another very good all round performance. The Accent lost out in the crucial areas of faster cooling to the higher placed cars and the grille temperature also did not go down as much though the difference between the City and this car was less than a couple of degrees.

OPEL ASTRA CLUB	5th
Though the car did not cool as fast as some of the others the Astra Club was very comfortable by the second 15 minutes of the test. The noise from the blowers was quite disappointing though.

OPEL CORSA 1.6 ROYALE	6th
A black car for the test, but we did not have any other options. Even so the car performed creditably. Though the blower made a lot of noise and threw out a lot of air, it did improve the circulation considerably.
