SUNIL GANDHI's query :Hi - I have Maruti Zen registered in the state of Madhya Pradesh. I have now moved to Mumbai for a year. I wanted to know if I can just pay the road tax without having to register the car in Mumbai. I've heard that this facility has been stopped in Mumbai. Could you please let me know if it is possible to just pay the road tax without registing the vehicle in Mumbai. My assignment here is not going to be more than 1 year so if that works than it will be good news for me. Many Thanks
Dr. Pasricha Answers : If you are going to stay in a State other than the one where your vehicle is registered, for a period exceeding one year, it is legally mandatory to change the registration number in the new State. You will have to pay road tax again, but you will be entitled to refund from your old R.T.O.

ANUP SIVADAS's query :I recently moved to hyderabad from bangalore. Is it possible for me to keep my current Karnataka registration, and drive in AP by paying only the relevant taxes. Please let me know what is the process and the relevant documents required Rgds, - Anup
Dr. Pasricha Answers : If you are going to stay in a State other than the one where your vehicle is registered, for a period exceeding one year, it is legally mandatory to change the registration number in the new State. You will have to pay road tax again, but you will be entitled to refund from your old R.T.O.

VIJAY's query :In 2005 I transfered a two wheeler from Maharashtra to Rajasthan. I am not getting time to go back and get NOC. Is there anyway I can get NOC by post or some other means.
Dr. Pasricha Answers : You should request one of your friends to show all the documents to the T.O. in obtaining the N.O.C. An application signed by you will be essential.

VENKATAJALAPATHI's query :Hi, I am in hyderabad having a 2 wheeler purchased in 2004 reistered at AP. Now, I am flying to US and will be returing after 9 months. I have 2 questions in this regard. 1. I want to move my bike to my hometown at Tamilnadu and move it back to Hyderabad once I am back. Do I need to get NOC? TN RTO consultants say i need to get NOC and re-register. is it correct? 2. I have LMV license. will getting IDP useful for driving in US? what the rules to get IDP. Thanks Venkat
Dr. Pasricha Answers : Since you are going to be away only for nine months, you do not have to re-register your vehicle. It will be, however, necessary to inform the R.T.O. in Tamil Nadu about the temporary shifting of your bike, for which you may have to pay some nominal tax. You can get IDP for a period of one year and driving is permitted against it in the USA. You should approach your R.T.O. with a copy of your passport and driving licence along with three copies of your photograph. They will give you IDP immediately. Remember that your residential address in the passport and in the driving licence must be the same.

PRAVIN JAYARAJ's query :Dear Sir, I am a resident of Coimbatore, TamilNadu. I am the owner of a Bajaj Pulsar 180 (May 2002) registered in Tamilnadu. Last week i went to Bangalore on my bike for a few days to check out the market in bangalore for my business. I took my bike along and used it as i do not have a more convenient mode of transport in Bangalore. During this period, one day, i was stopped by the police and asked for my documents. All my documents were in good order except my emissions test certificate, but they said that i should have paid the Karnataka road tax and asked me to pay a fine. When i protested, saying that i was visiting only for a few days, they said that i have to pay the tax just for riding a vehicle in Bangalore. When i protested further, they let me off before extracting Rs 100 from me. My duration of stay was just 6 days. Am i not permitted to drive/ride a TN registration vehicle in Bangalore for a few days without paying the tax? If if have to go again to Bangalore for a few days and the same thing happens to me, what do i have in my defense? Please help. Thanks.
Dr. Pasricha Answers : If you are going to stay in another State for a period exceeding one year, only then you will have to re-register your vehicle and pay lifetime road tax in the. new State. If you are going to stay for a period less then three months, neither you have to inform the R.T.O. nor you are required to pay any tax. However, for a period exceeding three months up to one year, you will have to inform the R.T.O. in the new State and pay some nominal tax.

NISCHAL TOPNO's query :I have two wheeler with bangalore registration. I was transferred to Chennai to i took a NOC for chennai. I have got transterred to Hyderabad. The vehicle was not registered in Chennai. What do i have to do to get the NOC for hyderabad
Dr. Pasricha Answers : You will have to re-register your vehicle in Chennai provided you stay there for a period of one year. Now you should approach the R.T.O. in Bangalore and obtain N.O.C. for re-registration in Hyderabad. Thereafter, you will have to physically produce the vehicle at Hyderabad along with all documents in original and the said N.O.C.

SALIL's query :I have a Tata Safari, my question is if I wanted to carry a bike on a rack mounted on the rear of the vehicle or a boat mounted on the roof, would it require any RTO clearance? Thanks in advance. Regards, Salil.
Dr. Pasricha Answers : If the bike and boat are fitting in within the body of the vehicle and there is no protrusion, it will be all right. Otherwise, you will need RTO's clearance.

SANDEEP's query :Dear Sir I have taken up an assignment in Mumbai and am planning to bring my car - Santro XG purchased in June 2004 with registration of Delhi.Kindly advise what I should do to comply with all required laws of both states so that while driving in Mumbai there is no hassle. Also can I drive with DL number in Mumbai, if yes for how long otherwise pls suggest path forward. Regards Sandeep
Dr. Pasricha Answers : You will have to re-register your vehicle in Mumbai. For that you will have to obtain N.O.C. from R.T.O. in Delhi and produce your vehicle along with all original documents and the N.O.C. before the R.T.O. in Mumbai. You can drive with DL number in Mumbai for a period not exceeding one year. If you propose to stay in Mumbai for more than three months, but less than a year, you should inform the R.T.O. in Mumbai and pay some nominal tax.

RAJ SEN's query :I have maruti wagonR car registration in kolkata having bank loan. I have been transferred from kolkata to chennai and bring my car along with me. Dr. Pasricha Answers : Since you prose to stay in Chennai for a period exceeding one year, as per law you will have to re-register your vehicle in Chennai. But in case you are going to stay for a period less than one year, it should be sufficient to inform the R.T.O. in Chennai about this. You may have to pay some nominal tax.
